Needle Palm Surviving Indiana
by Quasarecho- 0 replies
Fingers crossed, my Needle Palm seems mostly unscathed (as well as a couple of Southern Magnolias). We had a Christmas weekend blizzard/winter storm in the Great Lakes region. Temps down to about 9 below F. I wrapped the magnolias in a teepee of sheets and burlap. The Needle is near the house and has been in the ground for the past 1 1/2 years. I did pile about a foot of oak leaves around the Palm and threw a rug over it for the 3 coldest days. Windchills were down to about 40 - 50 below zero F. So far all looks good. Back into the 60s a week after the storm. Maybe their leaves will tell a different story in the spring. I've got McCurtain seedlings ready to…

Normanbya normanbyi in the ground about 10 months from a 2 gal. pot. Its between a fence and a boat but otherwise unprotected. The temps went below 50F around 9:30 pm on the Dec. 23rd and didn't get back to 50F until 11:30 am on the 26th. Temps went below 35F on around 5:30 am on the 24th and stayed there until 8:30 am. It never got above 46 on the 24th and again went below 35F at 3:00 am on the 25th and stayed below that until 9:30 am. Ultimate low on the morning of the 24th was 34F and ultimate low on the morning of the 25th was 31.8. No frost but we did have some sleet on Christmas morning. The palm is about 4.5 to 5 feet tall and showed very little damage as of now 1 …

Rhapidophyllum hystrix

No one has reported on R. hystrix, but maybe because it's one of the most cold hardy palms on earth. I have several scattered around my garden, and in my climate they require a good bit of shade in the summer. I'd like to put in a plug for Rhapidophyllum because it seems to be a very under utilized palm. It has a reputation of being slow growing, and it is in its early years, but once established, and in the right spot, they speed up. They are even nice looking as a smaller palm and somewhat resemble a large Rhapis. They are very exotic looking if given the right growing conditions, but they do require a lot of heat in the summer. I have one that is probably over 40 y…

I have no idea why this plant was alive without the freeze, but it looks perfect after the freeze as well. The temps were 27F, but the palm was below canopy. Gary

This was its 3rd winter in the ground here in Myrtle Beach, zone 8b. The first 2 winters it really didn't get tested as temps were basically in the 9b range. This past winter it went through freezing rain and a couple dips to 19F unprotected. First pic is before the storm, 2nd is the aftermath of the ice, and 3rd is the recovery pic from today (4/7/22).

Severe burning on most trees 2-10'. Damage to 30'+ trees in Fresno. Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. No overhead canopy.

Majesty Palm (Ravenea rivularis)

We planted this Majesty Palm 3 years ago. It is about 12 foot tall with about 1 foot of clear trunk. It's planted pretty close to the house but gets North winds. We always wrap the trunk with Christmas lights and try to cover it with frost cloth when we know below freezing weather or frost is coming. We had 2 days with light frost and a brief drop in temps to 27 that caught us off guard so the palm was not covered. Some of the fronds got burned badly but this thing grows so quickly you can hardly tell it suffered any damage. The picture below was taken August of 2008.

Zone 7a, LI, NY. Endured 25-30 degree temps with no damage at all. Then seen about 14 degree temps with strong winds for about 2-3 days (felt like it was zero with wind chill). Entire plant turned light green and thinned out. No burn signs. Covered it with plastic and added x-mas lights afterwards. Very cold temps followed 15-20 degrees for a month? Uncovered about 4 weeks ago and dark green color is coming back and looking real healthy. Also have a potted Fortunei which I left in the garage during all this cold. Tips began to turn brown. Pot seems like it was frozen. I moved it indoors. Center spear began to turn yellow/white. After about 2 weeks indoors, be…

Sabal palmetto cold damage
by Jono Miller- 4 replies

In the wake of the early 2010 winter, I'm looking for information and photographs of cold damaged cabbage palms. In particular, I'm interested in 1) the fate of palms that had been burdened with snow loads, 2) symptoms of cold damage in mature palms, and 3) symptoms of damage in seedling and juvenile palms. Photographs combined with location information and what is known about the tree (transplanted or grown in place) would be especially helpful. I may be retracing paths others have trod, but I'm trying to understand the original distribution of Sabal palmetto in the Southeast before they were extensively relocated. It seems obvious that mature Sabal palms can survive…

Hey guys. I know I'm late on this, but checking in with my 2021/2022 winter in-ground palm damage. Worst I've had in quite some time, but I'm sorry, I don't recall the exact temps. I'll note just the ones with damage: All four Hyophorbe lagenicaulis had completely fried leaves but lost only one. Both Elaeis guineensis (not trunking yet, but flowering) completely fried leaves, but fully recovered. All four mature growths on Dypsis cabadae killed, but younger offshoots were fine. All three Dypsis decaryi had some damage of the leaves but nothing terrible. Surprisingly, all of Satakentia liukiuensis leaves were completely fried but it appears…

Advice for Dypsis decaryi in 9a

Well - here’s my précious Triangle palm -I rescued her 2 years ago - she survived last year’s 14 freeze temps here in St Augustine while tucked against the east side of the house during a construction project. She is now placed in a lovely but lonely location in the open on the south end of the house near the pool. Our last frost day was 2 weekends ago. Fronds have evolved to this deep bronze over the past week. I applied copper fungicide to the spear area but that’s it. Any suggestions?

Bad Freeze in Florida - Royal Palms In Bad Shape
by Tiffany8282- 2 replies

I really need help! I am having a hard time finding a professional in the area that knows what to do with my royal palms. We had them planted one year ago, they are about 20’ tall. I pulled the dead lose pieces off the crownshaft today and Splitting, moldy and narrowing. Any ideas? We fertilized them two months ago after the freeze.

Chamaerops humilis

I don't see a thread for Chamaerops so here's my contribution. Green form, around 15 gal size, in ground, subject to 7 days where it only got above freezing once for a few hours (during the PNW Arctic Outbreak around Christmas of 2021 through New Years. Ultimate low of 16f. Zero apparent damage, and that was a month ago. I have a smaller one in the ground, around 1 gallon size, very small. It was covered with an upside down tote box and no heat. Also no apparent damage. I don't know what the limits of this palm are but I honestly expected some kind of damage to show. I'm impressed.

A suggestion
by Than- 8 replies

I check this forum often looking for species data but sometimes I feel that the information people share here is of little practical value because we only share the minimum temperature a species has seen but how about next day's maximum? Knowing only the minimum doesn't help much to know the real hardiness of a palm. Some of you live in climates where it may get, say, 26F at night but then will reach a balmy 60 next afternoon. Whereas others will see 26F at night and then just 35F or even 32F next day. We all know that these two hypothetical situations would affect the same tree in totally different ways. So how about everyone shares not just the minimum their palms have …

Its surprising there arent many cold hardiness reports on this so beautiful species. I decided to try it anyway after reading a post of Eric(Erin in Orlando) mentioning 2 mature V. joannis surviving -3C. Anyway, here is my report: 1m tall Veitchia joannis planted last summer,in a good microclimate and relatively close to a retaining wall(retaining 3meters of soil on the other side of it),experienced multiple hail events and a low of around -1C to -1,5C at the coldest part of the night, just before sunrise, with just slight leaf edge damage of 1-2mm Its already 2 weeks from the last cold and temperatures have been very high all this time, even allowing growth on Bism…

Dypsis pembana, 2 gallon size plant, in ground, 2 feet tall to tip of new spear. 24.1F, no frost, planted under a Queen Palm and next to a hedge, covered with a sheet. No immediate damage/burn. This palm normally shows some spotting during winter, which it's been doing for several weeks due to the ongoing cold.
