Hi all! I've been curious to see how the various landscape palms are looking north (and west) of Lake Okeechobee a few days after this latest freeze/near freeze February 20-22 cold wave in Florida. Any post event photos would be of interest to fellow members of this Forum. Thanks to all! Paul

FOXTAIL AND FREEZES

I noticed that with the freeze we had in early Jan, Foxtails suffered little if any damage. It should be noted there was no frost due to dry air, and some areas inland from em saw freezing or below for 10 hours, dropping to 26-27F. Two years ago it hit 30F for a few hours but there was HEAVY frost that night, and damage was significant if only on outer leaves. My foxtails are absolutely fine with 28.9F although one is sheltered. Any comments? My poor Mango has shown damage about 35' up the tree where most of the blooms were. Luckily, it will bloom again. Greg in New Port Richey (it was 38.9F this morning in my open cold back yard)...

Low of 29 on Sat AM. No frost Inventory includes: 2 triples about 14 feet tall with about 10 feet of trunk. Each has about 8 fronds. 1 has freeze damage on one frond of the largest stem. The smaller stems show no damage. The other triple shows not damage as of yet. 1 single about 8 feet tall with about 5 feet of trunk shows no damage due to being protected with heat. 1 other triple with stems of equal size are about 10 feet tall with about 6-7 feet of trunk. No damage visible yet.

I thought I'd enter this one. I've had probably an average winter here, which means a few nights as low as 33F. There is a fair amount of brown spotting on the leaves. It seems to have the same tolerance (or lack of) as my Veitchias and Hyophorbes. Nothing fatal, just unhappy. It is a "clump" of plants in a 5 gallon pot, so it is still pretty small.

4 4leaf seedlings and 1 almost 2 leaf seedling in unheated greenhouse,-4C minimum for 2 nights in a row and freezing tempratures all day(although in the greeenhouse it could be above freezing during the day but the minimums were the same during the night),no damage at all in any of them! Also,40-45C for days in the greenhouse ->no damage at all and no slowing in growth P.s.:This is previous year's experience as i dont have these palms anymore due to pesticide toxicity that killed them all

Even though had one of these totally defoliate year after year in Thousand Oaks, where it would routinely get down to 27F, it always came back fine. This year have a 4' tall split seedling in a raised bed with slight protection from a slatted wood awning nearby showed no damage to temps 27F for 5 hours.

So far, this appears to be a fairly hardy palm for So Cal. I had a small 1 gal sit outside ALL winter in a pot (only brought in when I thought might reach mid 30's, about 4-5 times) It regularly saw high 30's, and although slow, continues to plug along! I do know of a larger one at Matt P's and it is in the ground and growing...

AAA - keep this up a while

Howdyall: I've found the information in this particular series of threads useful. I suggest we keep it up for, say, six months so we can report on recovery of frozen plants? That's useful, too. How about it Dean? dave

24F low, no frost, 15 gal sized planted away from house and wrapped in blanket with box over top, virtually no damage. 3 nights below 28F. No true overhead protection, planted in shade of fence. Edit: Minor discoloration showing now to part of outer fronds, still bright green interior fronds. Looks like a box covering at 24F was enough. (no heat source was given). Maybe 15% damage.

Tender, they say. Four babies in the ground, about 4 feet tall, temps down to about 29 FF, some show serious (70% damage) others show mild (20%) damage. Big mama, 20+ tall, 29 FF, no damage so far, aiming a fan into the crown, call me mad! dave

I have a small 2.5' B hapala that was directly below one remote sensor that is 5' of the ground. It is against a north facing wall with canopy from treeferns and Ch tepijilote. Not sure how cold it was at ground level under the canopy but the sensor at 5' read 29 degrees. Just checked it again 1 week after freeze and there is no damage to any of the leaves. Will post a pic tommorrow when there is good light.
