Alphabetical Sorting

Matt and Everyone, FYI --- I have switched the default sorting in this forum to sort topics alphabetically per Matty's suggestion. Please be aware that the options for sorting are always available on all the forums at the bottom of the page. You can sort topics in any number of ways. Alphabetically by topic, topic starter, last poster, etc. Or chronologically by last post, topic start date, etc. Check it out. So if you prefer checking for the most recent additions, just sort that way, by last post, from the botton menu.

Something Positive 1 2
by PALM MOD- 76 replies
- 27.5k views
Let's salvage something positive out of this disastrous California weather. While the effects of the recent cold snap are still fresh in everyone's mind, let's try to document some info about the cold tolerence of various palms. Especially some of the newer introductions that may not have much of a track record. This will be far from scientific. However, it may be useful. Let's try and keep it data oriented, as there are many threads already describing the grief and horror of this devastating weather. Feel free to post pics to help document, or mention if you are referring to a small or mature specimen, or other relevant info. Add other palm species, or post your expe…

What to do with this info? 1 2

Now that we are getting all this great info, what do we do with it? Should we allow it to stay open, and let those in Texas or Florida contribute, if/when they get zapped? Should we try to condense it, and try to create our own Hardiness Guide to Palms? What do you all think?

Although there is some data in the topic Butia/Jubaea X Syagrus, it is unclear whether it involves the hybrids BJxS or JBxS. This topic is for the hybrid BJxQ (B x J) x Q. The Butia involved is either a mutt or odorata. Ten gallon under Acacia (high and open canopy). Some light bronzing to newer fronds from 26.4°F after 2 weeks. Floridians have theirs, South Cal have theirs (aka Palmpedia), time for those of us who live in North California (or in similar climates across the globe, like the northern Mediterranean coast) to make a freeze damage record. I guess most of this region belongs to the zones 9a to 10a with rainy winters. It would be useful to see how different species react to the freezes we get. So, if you have had frosts/freezes in your garden, please let us know how your plants have fared. Palms or not. Later I will combine everything in a spreadsheet. Please write temperatures, species of plants and observed damage. Personally, I cannot contribute anything yet as our winter h…

Chamaerops Humilis, 15 degree hard freeze.
by Ed Askew- 0 replies

So far, we have had a colder than normal winter in South Mississippi. We saw 15 degrees F in early January. I know it's not over. I have over 100 sabal palms, both S. Louisiana and S. Palmetto. 8 of the S. Palmettos are over 20 feet tall. The larger sabals have gone dormant, and there is a bit of a singe on the tips of the fronds, not unusual. The rest are totally unfazed. I have 3 Chamaerops; the largest is about 6 feet tall. They all have some freeze damage. The lower fronds are all brown and about 1/3 of the upper fronds have some browning. These palms saw 9 degrees F one winter and were totally defoliated, but usually they will hang on to their fronds down t…

The one in my backyard was protected for both freezes, but it was protected differently for each one. The first one, which saw a low of 18.1F, it was fully protected. The second, which saw a low of 23F, had only the trunk and spear area protected. The fronds were left out in the open. The fronds have shown no sign of cold damage, not even spotting. Will continue to monitor and provide updates as needed. I protected it in some way for both freezes as the cold hardiness with these is not widely known. As it gets bigger ill allow it to be exposed to deeper freezes to experiment.

Planted this in a protected spot in my 8b garden as an experiment. Well we just had back to back weekends of winter nonsense, freezing rain and 19° then snow and 19°. The first weekend my weather station wasn't working so I can't verify my yard actually saw 19° but the second weekend I can. Today will be 2 weeks since the initial event and here's how it looks. We hit 70 degrees yesterday and today.

Since no one has posted temps for this palm, I thought I'd show my brother's palms growing in Kansas City, MO (Zone 6a). Temps: His low this winter was -3F but he had 13 days in single digits which is when all the damage happens. Protection: Palms were buried in mulch. On coldest events heavy plastic was thrown over them. No lights or external heating.

2022-December Freeze (SC zone 8A)
by Turtlesteve- 12 replies

December 2022. We had 5 nights in a row at or below lows of 20F. The worst night (2nd night) we hit 12F with a high of 33 the following day and a low of 15F the next night. It was also extremely windy the night before it hit 12F so there was little mercy or benefit to having favorable microclimates. I still don’t know what will survive in many cases so will update as things progress: Unprotected plants: Butia Odorata: 7 large palms (one trunking and the rest near trunking size). One large palm completely defoliated, two with spear damage, the rest look perfect. The one that defoliated is still alive. About 15 smaller Butia (3 gallon to 15 gallon size…

had a frost at above freezing, I’m curious to see and share how my more tender tropicals withstood it, this was a tragic mistake of mine not protecting them to be safe, but it can be an educational experience for us all, I’ll post updates to how they’re doing. Also please share results with what you’ve experienced with me, I’m anxious as what to expect. 72402901698__B6755D22-187D-43C8-9E6F-CAAB1FE31E52.MOV 72402936937__484377A7-E068-4474-B2F6-53A3B23C26F7.MOV

0000 - Cold Hardiness Observation Master Data 1 2
by kinzyjr- 3 followers

- 9.2k views
Overview The PalmTalk forums contain thousands of observations on the cold tolerance from a variety of locations and climates. One of the primary difficulties in determining cold hardiness of a particular species or variety of palm is that observations vary greatly, even at the same temperature in the same location. Therefore, hardiness can be more accurately expressed as a probability rather than in absolutes. The goal of the attached list is to more accurately calculate the probability and degree of damage one could expect from a freeze on a particular species or variety of palm by consolidating the available data into one document. This list is provided …

Damage already

On Friday my Terminalia Catappa was fine. Last night temperature dropped to like 8-9 C (46-47 F). Saturday was windy, with northern wind. Maximum temperature reached 14 C (57 F). I have seen Terminalias in central Rajasthan where night temperatures in winter go lower than 45 F; they drop their leaves but in spring they produce new ones. Mine though looks like it's burnt. Do you think it's gone? Should I put it indoors tonight? Wind has stopped but temperatures will fall to 45 F tonight. It's in a pot. The soil is dry. The pot is inside a larger pot (the green one) with some rocks between the two pots to stop the tree from falling over from the wind.

12 inch tall strap leafer with 6 leaves and one emerging. In the ground with very sparse, almost non-exisitent canopy from a Syagrus r. One night 29F light frost uncovered - no damage Another night 29F light frost but covered this time. So far no damage. Fingers crossed for this palm. Matt

Bad news related to my Sabal Palmetto: Today, about 2 months after the Texas freeze, palmageddon, I noticed some tiny flies around palm's crown. I spread old fronds stems wider and pulled on the spear harder... and here it happened: I pulled the spear. The spear was light brown in the middle and white soft at the bottom. I poured copper Python 27 solution with a little of neem oil and insecticide inside. The palm was healthy and thriving before the freeze... I don't know how much hope I should have. S.

Florida Christmas Freeze 2022 1 2

This freeze impacted areas north of a line from Roseland, FL to Arcadia, FL to St Petersburg, FL. Temperatures dropped into the 20's as far south as Lakeland, FL, and temperatures dropped into the teens for areas in the Panhandle. There were several nights of cold, spanning from the 22nd to the 26th. In central FL, not all of these nights dipped below freezing, but temperatures in the 30's did occur. My official low was 19F in my back yard, although i suspect that the front yard may have been 17F or 18F based on the degree of damage to my Queen. I will be posting pictures of my palms in my yard here, and i encourage anyone else with any damage to post them here …
