This is not the method I suggest for toasted coconut! Potted Hawaiian coconut palm exposed to sudden temperature of 26 F for several hours at the end of October 2019. It is now in the ICU recovering and according to the doctors will need extensive rehabilitation. Please don't torture your coconuts like this.

Have three of these planted around the yard. Two along the east side of the house where sun hit first... also some Brugmansias overhead. No damage on the 27F night of the big freeze... but 6" seedling in lawn totally unprotected is basically killed... 8 days later, and this 'killed' seedling still has green in newest leaf... think it might make it. http://davesgarden.com/journal/j/si/114377/

Encephalartos ferox

20f, completely defoliated both of these with ease. I have seen burn on ferox begin at 28f and any frost or ice will burn them. These plants took 16f last year unprotected and didnt die. However one only had one abnormal flush that looked like it was close to death. Both have basketball size caudices.

AAA Florida General Palm Hardiness Data

This was found posted on a website and summarizes a lot of cold hardiness data. Reposting this here for general availability. reprinted from "The Palmateer" Dec., 1999 My main purpose in tackling this particular subject is to demonstrate to palm growers (the hobbyist & the commercial grower alike) the vast array of palms that can be grown with a little effort in central Florida. However it is necessary to preface a subject this "all encompassing" with a few of the obvious disclaimers, the first being micro-climates : lakes and other waterways to the north or north west of our gardens, tall plants that can provide windbreaks and large oak trees or other eve…

Syagrus X Juebae
by Gallop- 6 replies

I have 2 Syagrus X Juebae growing in ground for 2yrs. Both had gone pinnate this past summer. They survived last winter w/ overhead protection. In the low 20s for many days. They pulled through OK. This year no overhead protection and saw low 23F or so with heavy frost. Within a few weeks they went into rapid decline 1 plant spear pulled the other doesn't look to healthy it might make it ,we'll see. I'm coming to the conclusion these won't make it here in Pensacola Fl. it's to bad they are such a neat palm, they look quite different at an early age than the rest of my hybrids. On the other hand both my JXS took the last 2 winters like a champ.

AAAA - Virginia Palm Freeze Damage Data

A few of my palms did have some damage, one Butia had a lot of browning (it was covered with a bucket), another Butia had tip browning (it was covered in a large pot), and my Mediterranean Fan Palm had a lot of browning on random places (covered with a wooden structure and a tarp). My Needle Palm and Windmill Palm appear to be fine. The windmill had a tarp over it and many layers under and the needle had no protection. No heat was applied to any of these palms.

Although there is some data already compiled here, I think it is simpler to look up each species or hybrid separately. 27.7°F - no damage after 3 weeks. One in the ground (2 gal.) and a 1 gal. still in the pot. Both without any canopy or other protection. Tom Birt - Casas Adobes, AZ Hi 63°, Lo 32°

Southeast Baltimore County Lowest Annual Temperatures (Past 20 Years)
by LasPalmerasDeMaryland- 3 replies

So being the palm dweeb that I am, last night I was researching the lowest annual temperatures for Baltimore (my hometown) and I realized that the lowest temperatures were recorded at BWI airport. The airport is cooler than my location and I was curious what the same temperatures were in areas closer to me. So on the days where the lowest temperatures were recorded, I searched the temperatures at the weather stations closest to me and these were my findings for the past 20 years: 2019: 8° 2018: 5° 2017: 12° 2016: 12° 2015: 4° 2014: 6° 2013: 15° 2012: 15° 2011: 15° 2010: 16° 2009: 10° 2008: 16° 2007: 12° 2006: 16° 2005: 13° 2004: 8° 2…

Jubaea x Butia

I put a very small JxB in the ground in 2006. It had no characteristic leaves on it before winter hit. We had a low of 16. It was covered with a piece of plastic to keep it's head dry. In April one deformed spear grew out. No spear pulls. That's it. No other damage. Amazing! It's growing like a charm now.

Butia Freeze Damage In Virginia (12°F)
by PalmTreeDude- 9 replies
- 1.7k views
So we got down to 12°F a few days ago and now it has warmed up and we are currently in the low 60s and yesterday was in the low 60s as well. My Butia bought simply as a "Pindo Palm" from Lowes in the Spring shows little damage so far. The only damage I can see is a bit of browning on parts of the oldest leaves and a spot here or there on the "middle aged" leaves. The newest ones look fine so far. I will keep everyone updated, but I expected to see more damage and sooner. One of my other smaller ones got burned pretty badly, about 60% defoliation. As for the one that is showing little signs of damage, I must have gotten a pretty tough one. None of my palms were given any p…

Leucothrinax morrissii
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 6 replies

I am thoroughly amazed that with two nights in the mid to upper 20's here in Mandarin (a southern suburb of Jacksonville, FL), that two Leucothrinax morrissii show no injury whatsover! Now it might become visible in upcoming days or weeks, but compared to all Arcontophoenix in my yard, Ravenea rivularis, Sabal mauritiformis, Dioon spinulosum, & even Livistona chinensis! the Leucothrinax look much better. I wasn't here so I don't know the precise low but I think both plants were exposed to temperatures around 25-27F for at least 6-8 hours. I'm sure it was below freezing for at least 12 hours.
