Any hope?

In Florida a few weeks ago we had low temps. I see new growth, how might I proceed to save this palm?

First winter with palm trees. Most of the damage is already done on my Sylvester since there shouldn’t be anymore freezing nights. The shorter tree had it worse than the taller tree, but just about all of the fronds are burned on my Sylvesters but some fronds are almost completely burned with a tiny bit green at the bottom of each frond and some are only burned half way down the frond. And the baby fronds in the middle are still green so they’re not dead. But how should I go about treating this in spring. Should I cut off everything except for the meristem or only cut the lower fronds? And should I spray fungicide or is there no need to.

5- gallon sized plant under oak canopy withstood approximately 24 hrs below freezing with an ultimate low of 20F with no damage. I threw a 5-gallon plastic bucket over this palm as it had only been in the ground for 3 months prior to this.

I’m new to this so please bare with me. I have 2 queen palms (one that’s 12 ft tall & the other that’s 7 ft) that have been planted in our house early this summer. The palms are being heavily watered & heavy mulching already added. Antitranspirant Spray added & Christmas lights added around the trunks as well. I’ve ordered frost wraps but my order is delayed & won’t arrive until tomorrow. I live in Jacksonville, FL & tonight it will be 35 degrees but with gale force winds will cause a wind chill in the teens (very unusual climate for here) & tomorrow it will be a low of 27. Local stores & palm nurseries are out of stock of frost covers & …

2021 Freeze Damage - Texas and the Southern US 1 2 3 4

Given the duration and severity of the recent and ongoing historical freeze in the Southern United States, particularly Texas, it will be important to document the damage along with what happens to survive. In the future, archiving the damage will provide good insight into what future events may bring.

Livistona nitida
by Jon T- 14 replies

Kind of toasted after two 14-degree lows and several 8b nights, plus lots of low 20s. Had thin sheets on each of the three three-footers sometimes, but they were blown off at various times, often all night. I'd call it heavy to severe damage, though the spears and just-opening leaves are only moderately damaged. Gotta say that they looked pretty good until it started to drop below 20 -- maybe a little better than my l. australis and chinensis. DL. decipiens/decora is actually about the same as nitida, and doesn't look so bad comparatively, since half the fronds were frayed and straw-like even before the cold. Jon T.

Nannorrhops arabica (Silver)
by TexasColdHardyPalms- 6 replies

To start off with I am very disappointed with this silver variant of Nannorrhops. 1G and 3G specimens burned with frost and 27-28 degrees and I even lost a few, while the smaller 1G green Ritcieana. look great. I will leave larger ones outside to test next winter which should be larger 5G's by that time. I don't know how these naturalize in the mountains of Afghanistan if they can't handle high 20's and frost. From what I see our normal winter would 100% completely kill 3G's and smaller. These are not even Zone 9B when small.

Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. I measured mid-teens F at 18" in one part of my yard. OOPS... Forgot to bring these in. Back to Home Depot! In a ~30g tall terracotta pot next to house, some protection from eves and surrounding Canna. 10" pot size. This had been uncovered during the Dec 2006 freeze (~24F) with no damage and was unprotected the first couple of days of this freeze (recorded 24F nearby). I started throwing a heavy blanket…

2018 freeze in central Florida 1 2
by Ravensdog- 41 replies

Worried all night about my royals, foxtail, Alexander, and robellinii’s from last nights freeze, wasn’t overly concerned with my duo headed sago which pulled thru well. Have to say that I’m impressed of how the Alexander, the foxtail and robellinii’s pulled thru undamaged. The royals on the other hand has some burnt foliage which I sort of expected but the palms themselves survived. We’re expecting one more freeze tonight and I’ll have my fingers crossed. By the way, my t-stat here in Deltona was at 31° at 6:10 am. The weather Channel has us expected to be a low 29° tonight.

Low of 14F. 14 days straight of below freezing temps. 50% overhead protection. ~50 Plants in pots (3gal). No damage. One planted in ground as a 5 gal last year with no overhead protection showed 50% leaf damage and the spear pulled. Pushed up what was left of the spear last month and is pushing up a new leaf.

Sabal causiarum
by plamfrong- 9 replies

Here's a Sabal causiarum from the same Seattle garden as the heavily damaged Brahea edulis. It was planted as a small plant in the early 90's. It has never had really heavy damage, (this is the worst I've seen it) and benefits somewhat from being surrounded by pavement and rock. As for the ID, well we can only hope the owner got it right. It doesn't look right for a lot of the better known hardy Sabal species, though. Here again is the weather for that neighborhood during our big freeze. The coldest night was about 16 degrees but it was below freezing for a long time and snowed almost two feet. Magnolia Weather Station History

Sago Palm Damage - HELP
by Mrtommy03- 1 reply

Hello, I have 2 sagos in my backyard (about 10 years old). I am in north Texas, and if you didn't hear, we had what I refer to as "snowpocolypse" a few months back. I tried to cover my sagos as best I could, but it was sub zero temps for multiple days in a row... Not fun. Anyways, all of the fans turned brown and I thought they died. Then came late spring and early summer, and tons of Pups sprouted out near the base... But nothing on top. I have since harvested 4 or 5 of the Pups, and they are doing great. But here we are in mid July, still no new fronds coming out the top, but still more and more Pups are sprouting. Question: Will it ever spawn new fron…

My Arenga, growing open and exposed and getting a LOT of summer sun, looks toasted???? I thought it was hardy? I know, it prefers shade, but that was where there was room and the palms nearby will need to grow up to shade it. It was REALLY exposed to lots of frost as it is wide open and in a drain. 27.8 F was the lowest but it was below freezing for 10+ hours in that area. Should I move it come spring? I'm bummed! Greg

Thoughts on a Sylvester post freeze
by PoolPalm_AB- 7 replies

HI all - wanted to get some folks thoughts on a Sylvester date palm that I planted about a year ago around a new pool in north Houston. Before winter hit, it looked like things were going well and tree was getting established. Then came winter... coldest we've seen in the past decade here. All my palms which were planted at the same time last year took it pretty hard.... lost a lot of leaves on my 3 mule palms but they've come back strong and green. My two Sylvesters took it the worst with both basically losing all of their leaves. One has started to come back (attached a picture and you can see the green crown coming out). The other is not looking good and this is…

Live here in Greenville SC, Had several cold days this past winter. Three of my windmill palms (3' to 4' tall) have some damage. There are a few different stage spears that turned brown. Some party open, some almost all the way open but are turning brown. This is my first exsperence with this. What is the procedure to help, or are they done.

5 days of freezing temps, one day all the way to 26.6F, several leaves on a 15 gallon double got 30% burn damage. This specimen was 10 feet away from a copernicia alba that was untouched by the cold. This palm isn't very hardy as a seedling. The reports that this palm is hardy to 20F cannot be right. People are probably protecting their palms through their freezes. My p. cocoides seedlings have fared much better.

Freeze Damaged Galveston Bismarckia
by westbay- 0 replies

I've saved this great specimen twice over the last 15 years. In fact after Hurricane Ike and the freeze that winter, I joined the Palm Society to get recommendations for treatment. February 14-17 We had 18 degrees for at least 24-30 hours. The unfolded spear is green below the freeze damage. I treated it after the freeze with copper fungicide and have been watering it weekly. What do you think my chances are & any suggestions?

Trachycarpus Bulgaria

Please remove if this Trachy species is actually another one already listed and this is not the official name. Prepping for zone 3b in two years. The cost of protection and electricity will be worth it to have the only palm surviving (God Willing!) in the ground in Saskatchewan.
