Prichardia pacifica

Although this palm hasnt been through a freeze, I felt these photos were still informative. I have found that the reported extreme cold sensitivity of Prichardia pacifica is true. Fro two years in a row now, when temps get to the 42-44F range, this palm will start to spot....more heavily on the older leaves and lightly on the newer ones. So far this winter (2006-2007), the palm has seen down to 42.6F (December 9, 2006). But, this palm is good looking enough to merit the trouble IMO. Overall Newer Leaf (midway up crown) Older Leaf

P. pacifica , same general area and conditions as the Nephrosperma and Verschaffeltia, 7-8 OA, 2.5 feet of trunk... Torched, damage total....grown in shade which is the kiss of death for this Prit. If it lives, it will get moved to a full sun area this spring. By far, the most tender palm i have, with the exception of my Cyrtostachys....which will take a month or more to start the death throws i'm sure.....

Pritchardia remota

2' tall seedling, planted very close to 'weather station' showed severe burning on all leaves despite minimal overhead protection from a now dead Archontophoenix purpurea, from frostless 5 hours of 27F... Pritchardia lanaiensis just 3' away seerely damaged (though took an entire week to show it) with the same amount of overhead protection.... however that one has a good chance of survival.. The P remota is very unlikely to survive.

Pritchardia thurstonii

Multiple potted specimens, about 9 inches tall, low of 31.5˚, no frost: The ones in with full sun after about 8 am (so no sun during the morning frost) have minimal leaf damage but spear browning and turning soft, but still actively growing (suggesting that it's alive). The ones in all day shade have about 80% browning of the leaves with spear browning as well. A P. pacifica seedling in the location with full sun after 8 am shows extensive leaf damage, so I'd say that P. thurstonii seems a bit hardier.

ptychosperma caryotoides
by quaman58- 0 replies

I thought I'd enter this one. I've had probably an average winter here, which means a few nights as low as 33F. There is a fair amount of brown spotting on the leaves. It seems to have the same tolerance (or lack of) as my Veitchias and Hyophorbes. Nothing fatal, just unhappy. It is a "clump" of plants in a 5 gallon pot, so it is still pretty small.

Only about 20% damage from 28f. Performed much better than D. lutescens and D. pembana by comparison. I had always heard these are intolerant of the cold, but my experience shows it performs reasonably well. Pygmy date palm
by Blake johnson- 12 replies
- 9.8k views
I live in southern Georgia (zone 8b) and have my first Pygmy date palm that is fairly large. This winter of 2015 had a light maybe 1hr of snowing with temps getting to exactly 32 degrees. My Pygmy date palm was covered with about 3 old bed sheets and rapped in Christmas lights but still got severely burned during the cold. The fronds are now solid brown but the newest ones nearest to the spear still have some green. Will my palm survive?

Can someone please tell me if Queen palms will survive in Spring Hill Florida ? It seems to me that they do well for a number of years until a bad freeze. Will they recover ? Why do people cut them down ? Ive seen a few very large ones that have survived for 20-30 years ? Please help !!!

RAPHIA AUSTRALIS

A robust seedling, almost 3' tall, growing in a pot, after persistent cold weather and many nights and days with temperatures steadily below 8C / 46F, but no actual freeze (the lowest it got was around 1.5C / 34.5F), finally succumbed to the cold. Better said, it was completely toasted. So, not cold hardy at all, at least as a seedling in pot culture.

Raphia farinifera

This plant is often considered ultra tropical with its Calamoid friend Pigafetta et al. I planted this in late 2008 in a low, poorly drained area in full sun. Every leaf that emerged since it was planted is damage free, and was completely uncovered during this cold spell (29 and 31 ultimate lows)

It's not a palm, but everyone loves these things including me, which is why I felt a tear in my beer when I took this picture. It was exposed to three nights of 24.8, and a consecutive night down to 27. F, no frost. Baby ones nearby died outright. Sob!
