I flew into Guadalajara airport in June to meet my dad who drove from the coast to pick me up. It was smoking hot on the coast so we decided to take a tour of the inland mountains. We headed east towards lake Chapala just above the city. Blue Braheas in Guadalajara Then had to stop in one of the numerous nurseys around lake Chapala. Looks like hybrid phoenix robelli

Palm Beach! Holly Holy 1 2 3

Howdyall: I went to Palm Beach at the effusive invitation of Bubba where he talked me into his office after my (self-imposed) confusion . . . It's a well-to-do place, sorry I have to remember how to act! Bubba and his colleagues greeted me at his office (pic'd below, I think!) with such marvelously effusive warmth I had to check and be sure they didn't mean someone else . . . . LOL A wonderful tour ensued . . . . Bubba and I got sandwiches, then roared through PB (Bubba! You'd make a GREAT taxi driver, in the good sense, get 'em there, with care!)

From Manaus to Iquitos and Back 1 2

I left Manaus last Wednesday on a 1 PM flight from Manaus to Iquitos, Peru with a group of associated on a mission to start up a monthly barge service to and from Iquitos, Peru from Manaus. The barge company belongs to a friend of mine and he asked me to lend a hand securing the backhaul export business to Manaus. The idea is to send 40 foot ocean containers up to Porto Velho, Rondonia via the Amazon and Madeira rivers. From their load the 82 containers on the two barges and then return back to Manaus and up the Solimões (Amazon River) to Iquitos, Peru. Once in Iquitos load the container with wood, mostly destined to Mexico and deliver them to the container vessel in …

Dick Douglas's Garden: August 2, 2009 1 2
by JasonD- 46 replies

Yesterday, Dick generously opened his peerless garden for my garden group. It was a mild summer day, but to us shivering San Franciscans it was a taste of real summer and we enjoyed lunch and libations by the pool. Patric Shafer was working on his famed hybrids, and explained his process to the group, all of whom are professional gardeners, arborists and nursery folks.

Palms in Ukraine

The area of Greater Yalta on the Crimean Peninsula in the south of Ukraine is conveniently fenced off from the cold winter weather by the Crimean Mountain Range. The climate in Yalta changes rapidly as you descend from the mountains and becomes Subtropical Mediterranean as you get closer to the sea. Palms have been cultivated in Yalta since the early 19th Century.

Romp on the Swamp 1 2

April and I have a few acres of property in a very undisturbed part of FL (that is a hard thing to come by nowadays) We went out the over the long weekend and enjoyed some time away from the city. It was peaceful to say the least. There were monstrous bloodsucking mosquitoes at night but once we got our net up they were no problem. We saw scorpions and other insects by the ton during the day and heard gators and wild pigs during the night. Apparently there are snakes out here big enough to ingest small deer, but we didn't see any. The property has some canalized everglades along side it, but other than that the land is mostly untouched. This is the right of way…

Here are a few pics of our Central Florida Palm & Cycad Society Holiday meeting at Libby & Byron Besse's garden & Rob Branche's. Thanks so much for both of them opening up their gardens. Rob & Susie put out a bang up Holiday lunch for the group. Lets start with the Besse's 2 acre garden that is over 40 years old. My amateur photo skills screwed my camera settings, so many photos do not do the gardens justice. They look a little washed out. Entrance to the garden Nice walk down the main road to the garden

Jardin Botanico de la Universidad de Puerto Rico 1 2

Due to some unfortunate circumstances while ported in Puerto Rico, I gained a bonus week's stay permiting a Botanical Garden visit!! My certainty for many palm ID's is low, but hopefully you true palm/plant people can chime in!! JBUPR is not a Fairchild, yet its beauty is great! It is gigantic, but lacks the detail certain smaller Botanical Gardens possess. Due to their somewhat limited collection, I may have actually been able to capture every palm species in the park!! (although some were hard to photograph). It rained every single hour it seemed while I was in northern Puerto Rico, but miraculously the clouds parted during my visit to this garden. This palm needs no…

SFPS Spring 2007 Palm & Cycad Sale 1 2

This long awaited sale begins tomorrow, in a new location with a great selection of palms and cycads. After setting up for the sale during today and yesterday, I can say it is becoming quite the event. Thursday found us setting up amongst a few vendors who got to the center before us. It is always interesting when you are in a new location, since you have to start from scratch. All the former layouts, booth plans, and ideas all have to junked in exchange for all new ones. Friday was quite different, and I will post photos of the day's events. If you can make it down to this great garden, come by booth #57 and say hello. Jeff and I are always on the lookout for forum membe…

They have stood the test of time and have managed to not get LY so far. Sign Shoe for scale Some of these coconuts are ripe!

My weekend at "The Hoagies" 1 2

While working in Los Angeles last weekend the Hoagies were nice enough to let me stay with them. They are the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet and I am truely blessed to have friends like them. Here's some fun pics of the weekend. Friday night we went out to dinner at a Brazilian eatery but I forgot my camera so we pick up back at the house, just in time for shots! Jack (El Hoagie), Myself, and Danny (Palmazon) get the first smell of some Vodkaskot, the national drink of Iceland. Jack should have left that stuff in Iceland dude! It was like licorish and salt water with some extra deisel fuel added. Ok, pre-shot photo op. Down the hatch!

Granada, Nicaragua 1 2 3

Last week I went to Granada Nicaragua for 5 days. I've been wanting to see Nicaragua ever since I moved here 3 years ago and I finally had the chance to go. I first flew to San Jose where I stayed for a couple nights and met up with a friend from the US. We then boarded a bus in San Jose (Tica Bus) for the 9 hour journey to Granada. Tica Bus is pretty nice with comfortable seats and a bathroom on board. They also showed movies (in English with Spanish subtitles) which really helped to pass the time. The drive is actually about 7 hours, but it's an additional two hour wait at the border to go through customs and immigration. First a few photos from San Jose. Th…

Adelaide Botanical Gardens 1 2

I just got back from a couple of days working down in Adelaide, South Australia. Adelaide never gets much of a mention when it comes to palms in Australia. I too was curious, so decided to check out the local Botanical Gardens this morning before hitting the office. Adelaide is situated on the southern coastline of Oz, at about 35 degrees south, and has a Mediterranean type of climate with dry summers and moist, mild winters. They only very rarely get a light frost and the coastal plains there are quite mild compared to the hilly inland areas. I guess the climate is similar to parts of California, Europe and South Africa. The total rainfall for the year is about 540…

Greetings from Singapore and hello to my Palmtalk friends of yore! ( you know who you are...lol) It has been a while since I last posted here.......perhaps as long ago as my trip to Saudi Arabia. I am now (on project) working here in SG for a while and its obvious I need to visit SG Botannical Gardens, but is there any other "must see" gardens, etc here? This place is truly a marvel to see. I wish I woud have brought a palm guide book along.. I'm sure I can buy one (expensive here) but I think I can do with the internet..... Thanks in advance. WT

PSSC Meeting -- below the Orange Curtain 1 2
by DoomsDave- 76 replies

Howdyall: On this wonderful Equinoxian day, we had a gathering in Westminster and Fountain Valley, deep in the heart of darkest Orange County. And, what a glorious gathering it was, with a large number of the San Diego contingent in attendance. We began the meeting on "Palm Island," a palm garden in Mile Square Park (("MSP") it literally that big) which was initiated and continues to be midwifed by Mr. Ralph Velez, one of the original Godfaddas of the Palm Society, who'd been long at growing many palms since before many of us were even born. The Palmetum is in the northeastern corner of MSP near Edinger avenue and Ward Street. It's surrounded by a grassy lawn, …

The Oriente 1 2

I’ve been seeing all these travel logs about Central and South America and it motivated me to get with it and post some photos of a palm rich part of Ecuador. I had a chance to visit the that country’s portion of the Amazon basin at the end of November and thought the board would enjoy a tour of this part of the world. In a word, it was incredible. Seeing palms and other flora in habitat made it all the more exciting. This region of Ecuador is called the Oriente and it exceeded all of my perceptions accumulated during a lifetime. We started in the Galapagos, on to Quito, and then into the basin. The trip just kept getting better and better and is hands down the be…
