Cuban Royals in Chandler, AZ 1 2

OK, this is sort of a re-post or really an update from a post that Lee in AZ had on the old board. I live in Chandler, Arizona where today it's 105d F, and this time of year we're about 40-50% humidity, waiting for (hopefully) an afternoon or evening thunderstorm to cool the earth. In this climate, it's been very common to see queen palms, all kinds of date palms, and washingtonias up the wazoo. There's an Elephant Bar resteraunt a little less than a mile from my house that has two roystonea regia's gracing their main entrance, and they appear to be doing really well. The photo's taken are at about 3:00pm today. The palms are planted on a north facing wall and appear …

Prestoea acuminata and Prestoea acuminata var. montana shots!

These are taken in Cerro de la Punta, El Yunque, Camuy (where the Prestoea acuminata var. montanas are), and a swimming hole by Patinillas in Puerto Rico. They look very much like King Palms to me, especially with their habit in habitat! They always grow in this very red soil and seem to be a very social palm since they never grow alone! Who else is growing these and how do they do for you? I didn't see a single on in cultivation in Puerto Rico, nor did i see any in the botanical garden. I'd think they'd take more pride in a native palm! I know Darold Petty has one in San Francisco! It didn't seem to be thriving, which is surprising since they don't seem to like it hot!…

A few weeks ago, I made another visit up to my good personal friend, Dr. B. Frank Brown's nursery. Over the years, Frank has written many books and magazine articles. His most famous 2 books that he wrote were on Crotons. (Codiaeum variegatum) His first book on this colorful group of plants is named; Florida's Beautiful Crotons. It was published in 1960 and is now a hard to find collectors book. His second book was then written in the mid 90's sometime. This is the entrance to his nursery.

My friend Linda and I had long planned a diving trip to Belize, but for one reason or another, it was pushed back again and again. Finally last year while in Costa Rica, we committed to a trip this April, and, weak economy or not, we were on our way. We flew to Belize City via San Salvador, and took the first pix at the water taxi station, awaiting the boat to Ambergris Caye where we would hang out for about a week and do our diving.

Tour of Wilson Botanical Gardens

I thought that some other people from the IPS tour went down to Wilson Botanical Gardens during the visit to Costa Rica, but I never say any threads. My Wife & I went there in May 08 & documented a few photos. Wilson Gardens is located in South Central Costa Rica near the town of San Vito ~ 10 km from Panama border. It is ~ 3400' - 3900' foot elevation, which receives lots of rain. An extremely tropical garden with primary & secondary forest. It is used as a research station for scientists & students from around the world. They claim to have the 2nd largest palm collection in the world, but I now think it is around 4th - 5th largest. The Wilsons wer…

Big Island Enchantment 1 2 3

Did you ever wake up in the morning, walk outside, and behold a scene like this? Some of you have, I know. You rise early because of the time change and the excitement and anticipation of being somewhere new; you might walk uphill along a strangely quiet road, to encounter scenes like this: Steve and I have returned from a recent visit to Hawaii, the Big Island, and in this thread I will share with you as best I can the feel of being there. Most of the gardens we visited have been shown on the forums again and again, thus I will make no attempt to document the vast array of palm species, though you will get your fill of palm photos. My aim is to convey th…

Bocas del Toro, Panamá 1 2 3

A couple weeks ago I went to Bocas del Toro, Panamá for 5 days. The weather was not the best and it was cloudy almost the entire time. Since I am not the type of person to lay on the beach and bake in the sun, the cloudy cooler weather was kind of nice for a change. Bocas del Toro is a group of islands in the Caribbean off the coast of Panama - very close to the Costa Rican border. I flew Nature Air for the one hour flight from San Jose to Bocas. Flying over mainland Panama and out to the islands. Coming in for a landing

I took my parents and my son for a short visit to the Big Island in Hawaii this August. We stayed at Mr. Davis Dalbok's rental property, which was shown here before as the site for a previous Hawaiian Palm Society meeting. As soon as we unpacked, we went out to visit another garden that I really want to see. Many of you have been to this friendly porch. It is Bo's garden and check out the number of guest umbrellas. One friendly reminder is that the mosquitos are very hungry, but they are also smart enough to know that it is Bo who brought them these tasty visitors so they left him alone Can you believe this is a serious drought year for Hilo area? …

I was recently looking over some pictures of the most recent biennial in the Dom. Republic. Which then led me to start thinking what other countries I have been to. I thought it would be fun and very interesting to see where everyone has been to over the years. List all the countries, for what ever reason you were there. Lay-overs without getting out of the airport dosen't count. Pilots, flight attendants, company salesman/woman, palm collectors, what ever. My list is the following; Costa Rica (5) Ecuador Dominican Republic Peru Bahamas (3) Mexico (2) Madagascar (2) Bali, Indonesia Singapore Borneo Tahiti Panama Canada Thailand…

In search of the elusive Barcella odora 1 2
by amazondk- 46 replies

On Saturdy September 18 I took a quick trip up to Roraima, 350 kms north of Manaus on highway BR 174 in search of seeds of the Barcella odora. I am helping Dr. Couvet in Reunion Island obtain some species for his collection. I did not know if their would be ripe seeds or not when I got there. I knew where the trees were as I had found them on my many trips for work up north to Roraima. I had not been back there for two years though. So at 5 AM on Saturday I set out on the road with a coworker of mine who lives down in Curitiba. He was in Manaus for an important meeting we had on Friday and took advantage of an opportunity to get to know a bit of Amazonia. The fir…

Howdyall: I only spent an afternoon at Jeff's place, January 2, 2008, but it was one of the most memorable post-New-Year's days I've ever had. After touring his nursery (and having lunch!) Jeff took me to his place west of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County, and all I can say is thanks and it was glorious. On the road in, here's a drive-by shot of a hedgerow of A. wrightii that must have been a quarter mile long, in front of a new development.

Palms in Japan?

I'm headed to Tokyo in 10 days and will, of course, be visiting many gardens there and in Kyoto. The second half of my trip is wide open right now. Where might I see palms in Japan? I assume Kyushu is the best hunting grounds among the main islands, but I don't plant to go to Okinawa. Any specific gardens or natural areas to suggest (palmy or non-palmy both ok)? Thanks! Jason

took a small roadie this morning and went to look at a really big cactus nursery, followed up with some palms!! hope you all enjoy! the first pic is inside the retail area.

During my second trip to Madagascar, we were very fortunate to come across the true D. ambositrae in the wild. With all the discussion about this obscure species I decided to bring to light what we found earlier this year. The following photos of the small plant were taken in the capital, Tana, in the botanical garden. Jeff

Paricatuba 1 2 3

Weekend before last we drove over to Paricatuba to visit my wife's mother who lives there. Paricatuba is a small village which got it's name from the abundance of a bush which produces a drug used by the native indians called Paricas. The village is about 40 kms from the Negro River ferry boat port which links Manaus to the land west. Work is not starting on a 3.5 km bridge which will link Manaus to the municipality of Iranduba. This bridge will be the second longest in Brazil after the Rio de Janeiro to Niteroi bridge. It will be 54 meters above the rive at it's highest point (calculated on the highest level recorded for the river. The river rises about 20 meters f…

Palms Around Town - Jacksonville, FL 1 2

I've found a lot of random posts regarding this, so seemed like a good place to start a new thread in hopes others will contribute and share what they see growing around town. This is probably the most beautiful Queen palm I've ever seen, growing in a subdivision on the Northside, New Berlin Road area. Same neighborhood, not sure if it's Adonidia merillii or Wodyetia bifurcata. And this one is my neighbor's tree two blocks away, Butia for sure, not sure what variety. Arlington and Oakwood Rd area And my other neighbor's Butia, says they planted these 30 years ago, completely different look from the one above
