Tsimbazaza in Antananarivo
by elHoagie- 21 replies
- 12.2k views
This is probably the last of the palm photos I'll post from my trip to Madacascar. These were all taken at the Tsimbazaza in the capital city of Antananarivo. The Tsimbazaza was originally a military base, then a botanical garden, and now a zoo and museum. I think the garden was started about 75 years ago, so there are a lot of mature specimens. The capital is located almost in the center of the country at an elevation of 1200m. My guide said the temperatures drop below 5C sometimes, and she's seen light frost. It was pretty cool most of the time I spent in the capital, probably 20C during the day. Here's a picture of my wife and I under a mature Dypsis decipie…

I just got back from a wonderful week in the Southeast, with many palm related visits and activities in Rio de Janeiro, Guaratiba (RJ State), Campinas, Nova Odessa and Limeira (São Paulo State). My wife also flew from Recife to meet me for the weekend and we got together with other 2 great friends and important palm collectors in Brazil: Liana Mendonça (from Sergipe) and Ricardo Péres (from Minas Gerais State). Last sunday we all went to the glorious Jardim Botânico, located in the heart of Rio, a place I hadn't been to for decades, still in magnificent shape, and coincidently celebrating its Bicentennial party today. The administration is also trying to renew and impro…

The Bali House 1 2
by Jeff in St Pete- 79 replies

I posted some pics of this house last year but I finally got around to taking a full photo tour of the house and grounds. The Bali House is a rental house on this property located just down the hill from where I live. It was built in Indonesia, disassembled and shipped to Costa Rica. They sent a crew of Balinese craftsmen to rebuild it on a hillside in the rainforest here in Manuel Antonio. The Bali House had already been completed when my friend bought this property so I was not here during the construction. I have, however, lived through the construction of an additional 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (in a separate building) which are being built by Costa Ricans who a…

My Dear Friends, - It is a week from the day that I spent at Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Gardens at Pattaya, Thailand and during this time I have been organising my thoughts on my experience there as well as sorting my photographs. That having been done, I put the lot before you for your viewing and reading pleasure. However you must excuse the quality of my photographing as it was a very sunny day and the glare makes it impossible to provide a faithful reproduction of the colour, as also the fact the my camera was a simple sony DSC-150 point and click, (intentionally taken to reduce weight). You must also forgive errors in identification of palms (and doubtless there w…

Negril, Jamaica 1 2 3

I'm not sure what keeps drawing me back to Jamaica. Is it the beautiful scenery, the spicy food, the warm and friendly Jamaican people, the reggae music heard everywhere, or the totally laid-back way of life? For whatever reason I have been visiting Jamaica since 1980 when I stopped in Ocho Rios for a day on a cruise ship. In 1988 I went back to Jamaica with a group of friends (this time we went to Negril on the western tip of the island) for a week long bachelor party. This was during the time that I lived in PA before I moved to FL. After that first trip to Negril I was hooked and I returned every Winter for many years. Getting from Costa Rica to Jamaica proved …

Bamboo Land at Howard, Sth East Queensland 1 2

Big trip up the highway on Saturday took us to the famous Bamboo Land garden and nursery at the township of Howard between Maryborough and Childers. Of all the bamboo places I've sussed out, this joint is way out in front for product (species availability) , garden (live specimens) , price and advice/help. I can't speak highly enough of this place, it is an absolutely amazing, awe inspiring place. And it's free to visit, with a donation cup nearby which we gladly gave to. This is worth the drive dear ratpackers and others from the SE Qld community. Not that many photos unfortunately as I was too busy enjoying it. Gigantochloa Robusta Famous/favorite white bamb…

The Palmetum going forward 1 2

Dear friends, This will be a pictorial thread so I will start with a brief announcement. The new unofficial website in English is ready: http://www.pacsoa.org.au/places/SantaCruz/index.html There you will find all the fresh information that I will not repeat here. Here are few words to introduce the incoming pictures. In 2007, the Palmetum de Santa Cruz de Tenerife resurrected in many ways and I directed different works, from April 2007 until present. Thanks to the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Hall of Santa Cruz, we replaced the largest part of the watering system and planted about five hectares (12 acres) of new gardens. We put 58 new…

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden... 1 2 3

This is my first trip to Nong Nooch Tropical Garden where I bet many people here visited this garden more often than myself. This garden is about 150 km from Bangkok in the east (Near Pattaya) and it took me about 1.5 hr driving there. I could only spend half a day there due to the heat. It's middle of summer now in Thailand and the temperature easily rises to 40'c during mid day which causes me exhausted faster but I still had a chance to take many photos there, mostly palms and cycads. So here you are! The first pic is the famouse blue entrance to the garden.

Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum 1 2

I recently spent a morning at our local palm arboretum in St Petersburg, FL. I posted some pics on the IPS Facebook page, but thought I would post all of them here. It's a beautiful place located on the waterfront among other public spaces which include several different parks, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a beach, jogging/biking paths, a Pier, and plenty of free parking. I first visited the arboretum in 1994 and have watched it evolve and grow over the years. It's a must see for palm enthusiasts visiting the Tampa Bay area. It's open every day and it's free of charge. For more information click here http://www.stpeteparksrec.org/gizella-kopsick-arboretum.html …

Hawaii Island Palm Society hosted a garden tour at Ho'owaiwai this afternoon. This is one of the great gardens in Hawaii. It was started by Liloa Willard almost 20 years ago and and is now a mature garden, spreading out over an entire valley and some of the surrounding areas. Several Forum members were in attandance, so I'm sure we'll have plenty of photos. It's getting late here, so I'm just going to get this thread going with a few photos. With more to come tomorrow. (And for the rest of those who were present - feel free to add your photos here, unless you want your own thread...! ). Entrance from Ka'ie'ie Homestead Road, about two miles up from Highway 19.

Well we just got back from another vacation to the big island and it never stops amazing me how much there is to do and see there. We brought the kids this time so while we were able to plant some palms and work on the house we also took alot of adventures and hikes and saw many new things and parts of the island that we had not seen before. I was very happy to see that every single palm that I had planted last time we were out there had not only survived but were thriving and had put on significant growth. Anyhows everyone had an awesome time and we can't wait to go back. I met Jerry and Cindy Andersen at there Leilani property and nursery and they hooked me up big time …

Palms in Italy 1 2 3

Last August we spent a few weeks in Italy and spent time in regions north of Rome through to Milan. We enjoyed fine food and wine and checked out the old historic places and some city sites. There were not many palms to be seen except for Med fans and some CIDP. I guess that more would have been seen in the south. The best display that we found was in the Florence Orto Botanico, Giardino Dei Botanico. They have a large glasshouse there where they store all the potted plants during the colder months. there were only a few palms in the ground in the garden, this one should be well known.

New Eco Reserve 1 2 3

Yesterday I was invited to visit and take a tour of a new Eco Reserve just outside of Quepos. A friend from our local palm society bought 700 acres of rainforest at the foothills of the mountains. There are trails along the river that lead to waterfalls and a trail that leads up to the top of the mountain. We walked the river trail yesterday which leads to a couple different waterfalls on the property. We stopped and had a picnic lunch, then took a swim in the river. Here we are after turning off the main road and heading inland towards the mountains. Dirt road through the African Oil Palm Plantations. Narrow bridge - our tires scraped along the si…

World Botanical Gardens 1 2

Lanny Neel, Director of World Botanical Gardens at Umauma, invited me for an afternoon at the WBG today. This is on the Hamakua coast north of Hilo, right after the 16 mile marker. Most of the palms were planted in the 1990s, before Lanny joined WBG, and even though many of them still have their original name tags, some of these names have now been changed. Many palms had no name tags to begin with, and my challenge was to name them. We managed to ID a majority of the palms, but there are still a few mysteries and they will be shown as such in this thread. Any feedback & suggestions most welcome! This is the entrance from Highway 19, looking makai (towards the o…

Token palm picture so you don’t just click way from all this writing! Trust me, there are lots of photos to come, some educational, some funny, some astoundingly beautiful and some just strange. It is this juxtaposition I enjoy the most about travel. Life takes many unexpected turns and mine has been no different. However many of my unanticipated twists are in part palm related. I do not use FaceBook or blog anywhere, much less tweet, however I occasionally post on Palmtalk beyond just palm portraits. In finally running out of excuses not to post about the splendid 2016 IPS pretour to Sarawak Borneo, …

Sarawak Palms in Habitat 1 2
by elHoagie- 67 replies

Lindsey and I visited Sarawak for a couple weeks in April. We spent all of our time in National Parks and reserve areas, and we saw a lot of fantastic palms (and amazing animals!). We're still going through all the photos, but I'm going to post the first batch. It was very dark, and very dense in most locations, and so difficult to get "clean" photos of the palms. I have what I think are correct IDs for a large number of the palms we saw, and I know the genera of most of the palms. Some I have no idea... Any help you can provide with IDs would be excellent. I have much higher resolution photos I can send if that would help with an ID... All of the photos from this fir…
