Belize IPS Board meeting
by mike in kurtistown- 21 replies

Responding to a comment from the author of the next topic, I have decided to post some of my photos from the IPS board meeting in Belize, March 11-15. I didn't take any pictures of the meeting itself, but took some fair to good ones during the subsequent excursions to Mayan ruins and jungle palm walks. We stayed at the duPlooy's Jungle Lodge west of San Ignacio, about two miles from the Guatemalan border. The local people were largely of Mayan ancestry and the most common language spoken and on all the local signage was English. Spanish and Mayan vied for second place. I'll never think of Attaleas the same way again after seeing hillside after hillside in which thes…

Best Botanical Garden for Palms in LA
by palmhort- 5 replies

I am planning on attending the Biennial in October and want to stop in LA on the way to visit a botanical Garden. I've never been to LA and may not have a lot of time to visit more than 1 garden. What botanical garden is THE BEST for seeing Palms? I initially thought Huntington Botanical Garden was the best but upon a Google search, I'm thinking maybe not? Thanks for the help. Jeff

One of the things that got me into palms was walking my german shepherd Bart. I started noticing palms, and soon wanted to know what each one was. First up... Not sure I like this, but the CIDPs seem happy.

Best place to stay in South Florida?
by jimbiz- 7 replies
Can anyone suggest a really cool place to stay in South Florida, preferably in Miami Beach? I am planning a trip for next June to Florida. Other than a short stop in Key West during a cruise a few years back, I have never been to Florida. It seems that family vacations take us to places that have a historical significance or a place of (non-palm growing area) natural beauty. And where, besides Fairchild Tropical Gardens, are good places to go and see palms? Will appreciate any suggestions!

Best Retail outlet in South Florida

Heading to South Florida in mid March. Looking to find a really good retail outlet for some unusual palms, something on the lines of Searle Bros. but obviously something open to Joe Public. Someone said that D'esign Botanicals was pretty good, and I think it's open to the public. I would love to take home a little Copernica Fallensis/Gigas. Any Suggestions? ( open to checking out anything south of Tampa.) thx J

Howdyall: After a PSSC schmoozathon in Holmby Hills, I schlepped through Beverly Hills to get to my humble abode to recharge my electrode . . . "Pat, this is Hef! Big Bend National Park, Texas

Not really a park associated with palms per se; however, there are some interesting Phoenix sp. stands (probably Phoenix dactylifera) located at the Hot Springs Historic Area of the park along the Rio Grande. They were probably planted there before it became a National Park (possibly by the homesteader J.O. Langford). They are located at 29.177583103922945, -102.99869840224089. These pictures were taken on March 20, 2022. I spoke to one of the park rangers there about them. They said that the National Park Service does absolutely nothing to maintain these palm; they are left to their own devices. There is a hot spring along the Rio Grande nearby. It is heated by so…

Well we just got back from another vacation to the big island and it never stops amazing me how much there is to do and see there. We brought the kids this time so while we were able to plant some palms and work on the house we also took alot of adventures and hikes and saw many new things and parts of the island that we had not seen before. I was very happy to see that every single palm that I had planted last time we were out there had not only survived but were thriving and had put on significant growth. Anyhows everyone had an awesome time and we can't wait to go back. I met Jerry and Cindy Andersen at there Leilani property and nursery and they hooked me up big time …

Big Island Enchantment 1 2 3

Did you ever wake up in the morning, walk outside, and behold a scene like this? Some of you have, I know. You rise early because of the time change and the excitement and anticipation of being somewhere new; you might walk uphill along a strangely quiet road, to encounter scenes like this: Steve and I have returned from a recent visit to Hawaii, the Big Island, and in this thread I will share with you as best I can the feel of being there. Most of the gardens we visited have been shown on the forums again and again, thus I will make no attempt to document the vast array of palm species, though you will get your fill of palm photos. My aim is to convey th…

Big Island Hawaii

The other day Cindy and I decided to hike out to Shipman beach, here on the big island of Hawaii. For those of you that have visited the big island, you would know that there are not many sand beaches here. Most of the sand beaches on the big island are on the Kona side of the island, but there is one white sand beach on the east side, known as Shipman beach. Shipman beach is about a three mile hike going through a jungle trail, weaving in and around the coastline. It is so picturesque that when you enter this cove, you think you have found Giligan's island. Directly behind this beach cove, is the Shipman Estate home. No one lives in this estate full time, but the ca…

Well I was hoping to meet up with IPS peoples but I didn't have time, I lost an entire day due to plane troubles, but once I got to the island it was as amazing as I remembered. I'm already planing my next trip to Hawaii tho, next time is probably going to primarily be Oahu. I took many more pictures but these will do for now. Sorry if I wanted to meet up with you and didn't let ya know, We managed to make our 6 days on the island very busy yet equally relaxing!

Bill Austin garden tour, Hawaii Island, Jul 16
by mike in kurtistown- 6 replies

I have some photos to offer from this tour last Saturday. Bill Austin's palm garden is several decades old, and will likely be available for visits during the IPS biennial in October. Readers will observe many umbrellas. This is because the time of the tour was right at the closest approach of Tropical Storm Darby to the southeast of Hawaii Island. Somehow I managed to take 33 photos, not all worth showing, while manipulating my umbrella and keeping my camera out of the rain. Some local palm buffs will see their images in photos, hard to avoid in a well-attended tour, so I apologize for that. (I just hope no one is wanted by the FBI.) The best represented genus is Dy…

Bill Austin's Garden Tour
by Mike Evans- 19 replies

My wife and I had the opportunity to go to the big Island Hawaii. We visited a few gardens, and did not have time to see the entire Island or all the fabulous gardens. The first stop was Bill Austin's garden just south of Hilo around the town of Mountain View. A Nice Dypsis Lastelliana showing her upright leaves. Bill and Margie (my ranch hand) I am not going to guess on some of these. Fezz the Palm Dog. Actually, Bill has 2 dogs that look identical, so I might get some of them wrong. Dypsis utilis, I believe.

Blue Gum Forest
by philinsydney- 8 replies

This forest was saved during the depths of the 1931-32 Depression by some determined bushwalkers raising 150 pounds to buy out a logging lease. This was a huge amount in the cashless depression, and was probably only possible because of an interest-free loan from the Commissioner of Railways, himself a keen bushwalker.

Boa Vista Roraima

I spent the past few days in and around Boa Vista, Roraima (approximately 900 kms north of Manaus) the next state north of Amazonas bordering on Venezuela. The capital city of Boa Vista is in what is known as Campos Lavrados, a savanna type area dominated by cerrado vegetation. The area is ringed by forest on all sides with the Guyana Shield on the north with the borders of Venezuela and Guyana. The most striking palm in the area is the Buriti, Mauritia flexuosa which populates areas which are normally wet. These pictures I took yesterday afternoon as I took a little photo opportunity jaunt after I got done with business. The area is dominated by the mountains of th…

Bocas del Toro, Panamá 1 2 3

A couple weeks ago I went to Bocas del Toro, Panamá for 5 days. The weather was not the best and it was cloudy almost the entire time. Since I am not the type of person to lay on the beach and bake in the sun, the cloudy cooler weather was kind of nice for a change. Bocas del Toro is a group of islands in the Caribbean off the coast of Panama - very close to the Costa Rican border. I flew Nature Air for the one hour flight from San Jose to Bocas. Flying over mainland Panama and out to the islands. Coming in for a landing
