Bali November 2017
by greysrigging- 6 replies

Had an extended holiday on the Indonesian island of Bali back in Nov-Dec. My first visit there despite my home town of Darwin Australia being only 2 and a bit hours away. November is perhaps not the ideal time to visit as it is the beginning of their 'Wet' season and those not acclimatised to the high temps and humidity find things a bit trying. My partner and I coped quite well as we hail from a region of Northern Australian that has a brutal monsoonal climate. Bali is blessed with rich volcanic soils and generous abundant rainfall so the whole island has a lush tropical look. It is a very 'palmy' place with lots of native and exotic palm species in cultivation…

Bali palm gardens?
by NorCalWill- 3 replies

I'll be in Bali in a few weeks, and was wondering if anyone in Bali or who is familiar with Bali can recommend botanical places to visit, particularly with palms. I've been to the bird park, and normally stay at the Hyatt in Sanur, both of which have some great palm specimens. Are there other gardens to visit?

Pohonkelapa's Bali pics inspired me to post some from my trip in May. I can't identify many of the palms I saw, I'm not a palm expert, but I saw some amazing gardens. Pictures were taken in and near the Komaneka Hotel in Ubud, and Bali Hyatt in Sanur Beach.

Bali's Gardens

The March 2007 issue on Garden Design Magazine has a nice feature on Bali and it's gardens. I know that it is a favorite of Paul's. The article goes into some detail on what is perceived to be Bali Style, garden wise. The principles of this type of tropical design are applicable to me and I would like to incorporate some of them into my garden. They are Stone decorations, Offerings and Shrines, Dramatic Entryways, The Bale, Still Pools, Deep Roof Overhangs, Carved Stones, Large Cisterns and Quiet, All Pervasive Water. The same issue also covered "100 plants we love". I was disappointed that not one palm or cycad was mention. Come on Garden Design. Will make some…

Bamboo Land at Howard, Sth East Queensland 1 2

Big trip up the highway on Saturday took us to the famous Bamboo Land garden and nursery at the township of Howard between Maryborough and Childers. Of all the bamboo places I've sussed out, this joint is way out in front for product (species availability) , garden (live specimens) , price and advice/help. I can't speak highly enough of this place, it is an absolutely amazing, awe inspiring place. And it's free to visit, with a donation cup nearby which we gladly gave to. This is worth the drive dear ratpackers and others from the SE Qld community. Not that many photos unfortunately as I was too busy enjoying it. Gigantochloa Robusta Famous/favorite white bamb…

Took a trip up to Carlsbad Ca. last weekend check out the exotic plant sale and the flower fields. Bruce from the Cycad Center let me know about the show and it was a nice diversion. Got side tracked by some bamboo on the way up so there are a few photos of those as well. Tim Liked the color of the clums and the growth habit. Don't have a clue of the species. Here is a close up of the clums.

On the UK Oasis site there is an interesting idea about why A. cunninghamiana grows on the cool mountaintops above 3000 feet with the Antarctic beeches (or at least, young ones do) See the thread marked Nothofagus moorei in UK? http://www.ukoasis.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=3538

Bangkok....A quick Look

Just spent 9 days in Thailand and five of those were in Bangkok. I thought I'd share some of my thoughts and opinions for those considering attending the biennial. It's a vibrant, electric city with the most incredible sights I have ever seen. The people are so nice and the food..........was out of this world. It's also bordering on chaos and the air quality was pretty poor. Transportation and food are cheap, but be prepared to be stuck in traffic most of the time and we found that to be the most exhausting part of the visit. If your planning to spend a few days there I'd recommend hiring a taxi at your hotel for the whole day as you travel to and from the sights and…

Apart from the fantastic flora and fauna, one of the nicest things about the biennial in Costa Rica was making new friends. Even though we were not on the same bus, FM Jungle Jim, aka Phil Edwards, and I struck up a friendship, often sharing seeds and swapping stories at the end of the day. Once he heard of my nursery project here in Trinidad he invited me over to look at his operation, Exotic Palms Inc., and to collect some seeds 6:30 am flights require early wake up calls! Soon enough I was winging it above the clouds. The airport landscaping was pretty impressive, as you would expect for a country that depends greatly on tourism for most of its GDP. Unfor…

Build by Geoffrey Bawa around 1998, The Lighthouse Hotel is out of the fort, on the indian ocean coast and escaped from the tsunami. Since that time, I am not able to stay on the coast, but I feel fine at the Lighthouse.

Beautiful downtown St Petersburg FL

I was in the Tampa Bay area during the first week of June and spent a day walking around St Petersburg with a friend. Downtown St Pete sure has changed since I first moved to the area in 1994. The city used to empty out after 5 pm and it was mostly retired folks living there. Now there are tons of new housing, new stores, sidewalk cafes, etc and people have moved back downtown again. It's a great place to live and one of the most beautiful cities in FL (IMHO). Phoenix dactylifera

Bela Vista Update 1 2

Yesterday we went over to our place in Paricatuba on the other side of the Negro River. It has been a while since I have been there, Mother's day to be exact. I had some problems with my car registration which is from Campinas, Sao Paulo. They check your registration when you get on the ferry boat and since mine was messed up I have not been going. But, that is now fixed so work should be happening at a better pace. So far I have 3 African oil palms and 5 coconuts planted. But, I have a whole forest of trees growing here in Manaus. I really can't say this is a travel log since I did not travel anywhere and it is home. The rain has stopped and it is a good ti…

My friend Linda and I had long planned a diving trip to Belize, but for one reason or another, it was pushed back again and again. Finally last year while in Costa Rica, we committed to a trip this April, and, weak economy or not, we were on our way. We flew to Belize City via San Salvador, and took the first pix at the water taxi station, awaiting the boat to Ambergris Caye where we would hang out for about a week and do our diving.
