I took my parents and my son for a short visit to the Big Island in Hawaii this August. We stayed at Mr. Davis Dalbok's rental property, which was shown here before as the site for a previous Hawaiian Palm Society meeting. As soon as we unpacked, we went out to visit another garden that I really want to see. Many of you have been to this friendly porch. It is Bo's garden and check out the number of guest umbrellas. One friendly reminder is that the mosquitos are very hungry, but they are also smart enough to know that it is Bo who brought them these tasty visitors so they left him alone Can you believe this is a serious drought year for Hilo area? …

U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory

I finally went to the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory for the first time last weekend. Strangely enough, I've been twice to their greenhouse complex that is only open to the public once a year, but never made it downtown next to the Capitol building to see the conservatory. It's not large, but the central part is very tall and beautiful, with an elevated walkway. Here is a double row of Royal Palms, I assume.

Uganda 2008

At the end of last year, I spent two weeks in the wonderful country of Uganda. It is an amazing place, full of contrasts. It is a little behind some of the other east African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania because of various reasons such as civil war, but it is beautiful none the less. I don't really know what else to say, but hopefully my pictures will tell a lot. Seeing Kim and Wolfgang's photos of Tanzania and Congo, it is very similar. Hopefully this will be a complete travel log off the journey it time allows to load them all! Right, first off, the trip into Uganda We flew Emirates all the way, as it was cheaper, and easier flying right from New Zea…

In Kalawana is a place for an Indiana Jones palmaddict! Seeing the palms from underneath the roots! You can enter under the hill, in such a chaos of boulders, due to some strange geological phenomena... and after more than one hour trip, you emerge in the middle of a tea plantation! Hotel Boulder Garden, Kalawana ( see my topic in Travel logs)

Hey all, I just booked my flight to Kona, Hawaii! I'm planning on staying in Hilo for 7 days, I've been to the big island once before, but my interests were totally different then... I'm hoping that the palm community can give me some suggestions on neat things to see and great places to see plants! I'm also hoping to eventually relocate here so, might be spotting out homes, and offices... Hoping I can make that work!

Urban palms in Taipei

This was my first solo visit to a city where I'm totally clueless about the language and much of the culture. Since it was a break after a hyperactive January, it was also kind of underplanned. Not to mention that getting there took an extra day because the plane was diverted to Hong Kong. Great chance to visit what must be the world's best airport. I spent one and a half days at the National Palace Museum. Crowding was a problem, but arriving promptly at nine provided an hour of peace. The visit to the newly refurbished museum, probably the best collection of Chinese art in existence, confirmed that they sent some of their very best items to the US ten years a…

Got a look at the rebuilt, super-spiffy USBG, at the downhill SE end of the Capitol grounds, next to the American Indian Museum. First, here's a bit of the USBG, making the area look a bit more fit for mere humans. The Capitol Dome is still a wonderful sight, even if it seems to be a slightly dumbed-down version of St. Paul's Cathedral. In both cases, the architect had to reduce weight so the not-so-sturdy foundations wouldn't fail. Both had clever solutions. Wren used wood and ship's carpenters, Walter used cast iron and presumably some Big City workers. Amazing that the Big Dome was erected during the Civil War at Lincoln's insistence.

Had a great day at Utopia nursery in Valdora yesterday, thanks Clayton and Teresa. Your generosity and knowledge is unbounding. And if saying that doesn't get me more discounts, nothing will. Seriously though thanks for a beaut day, even though I was in poor in health (nuff said). The troup includes some of the finest palm collectors/growers and top people you are likely to meet. Most are on this board, they are Daryl, Clayton himself, Col Wilson, Michael and Andy Green. Right, here we go. First the lads. From left to right, Daryl, Michael, Col, myself, Andy and Clayton. I grew up less than ten minutes from Valley Forge National Park and spent a lot of time there as a kid and a teenager. My parents took us horseback riding in the park when we were young and I've had many picnics there over the years. When I was home visiting my parents, I took a drive over to Valley Forge and took some photos. I forgot how beautiful this park is. Bike/jogging path through the park Schuylkill River and the Betzwood Bridge Canadian geese on the river This is actually a long thin island in the middle of the river. Ducks and geese nest there every Spring.

I had a chance to check out Villa Vanilla today. This vanilla plantation and spice farm is located about 10 miles east of Quepos/Manuel Antonio in the foothills of the mountains. It bills itself as a tropical laboratory for sustainable agriculture comprised of 27 acres of agricultural production and 125 acres of primary and secondary rainforest. Their cash crops include their major spice - vanilla, as well as cocoa, true cinnamon (Ceylon), black and white pepper, allspice, cardamom, plus exotic fruits and essential oil plants. The plantation and all of their products are certified organic and demeter biodynamic (whatever that means). We started the tour at th…

Visit New Orleans and Play a New Game

I took pictures almost two years ago hoping to be able to show the progress after a while. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been much progress in the Lakeview area, near the 17th Street Canal levee break. When Eddie was in town last month, we drove around to check things out. We had an ice chest of beer and played a new game: How high did the water get here? Here are two that have been renovated and a palm that recovered nicely. Hint: Just look for the waterline. This one was very close to the levee break.
