Two weeks ago there was a holiday here and i got two more days vacation. My family, my parents and all my sisters families, went to a warm water resort in Jurema , Central Paraná. The climate there is a lot warmer than here on the second tableland, because of the low altitude and it´s also located northern from here. The distance from Carambeí to Jurema is +- 300 km. I didn´t saw so many palms on the road,(mostly queens) but I photographed some of them. I saw Acrocomia totai,a Butiagrus,a Sabal species(?) and most interesting of all: Euterpe edulis growing in the warm region of Jurema but also a few trees in the araucaria forest ,in a region that officialy isn´t the …

Trip to China in California
by DoomsDave- 32 replies

Howdyall: As you know, La Habra, California, USA where I live is a lot like Mexico. Which is perfectly cool by me. Most of the time. If you can't handle a little Spanish-speaking, the entire Southwestern US isn't for you. (okay, don't delete this post . . . .) Ahem. But, there are days when the frijoles, pescado, pollo, arroz, sopes, tacos, burritos, muchachos/muchachas, viejos/viejas, ninos/ninas, gabachos, gringos, burrachos etc etc etc just get tiring and you want something else. And, beans, fish, chicken, rice, etc., don't do it either. If you were really in Mexico, well, not much to do. But, here you're not really in Mexico, so you go over the…

Went to see the in-laws in Pagosa springs Colorado recently. Was lucky enough to see the Fall seasonal change in the trees as well as the first snow. They live in a remote and rural area in the mountains at around 7000' elevation. This is part of the view from their porch!

Trip to Fullerton Arboretum

Howdyall: Took my camera on a trip to the Fullerton Arboretum about a week and a half ago, and a fun time was had. Admission's free, though they ask for a volunary $2 donation. Not much of a palm collection, but lots of other cool plants . . .. . Like this nice Bignonious looking vine-shrub right next to the entrance.

Trip to Greece
by Janni- 16 replies

Hi, these are pictures taken at a trip to greece in 2007 with my girlfriend. We travelled trhough the peloponese peninsular, from Loutraki, Corinth over Nafplio to Kalamata in the south. This took us for about 1 week. After that we stayed a few days in a hostel in athens and the last trip was to northern greece, where my grandparents live and to Thessaloniki ( the second largest city of greece). Especially in Nafplio - which btw was the first capital of modern greece - there was a big variety of palms. And this is unusual for greece, where you find almost everywhere just phoenix' and washingtonias - daspite of a very favourable climate for many other palm species. In Pa…

Hi, here are the pictures of the second half of my greece trip in 2007. we stayed for a few days in athens and visited the typical tourist sights: athens plaka, acropolis, ancient agora and the botanical garden. the last time i was in athens was summer 2001. the city developed very much from that time on and especially the old town district of plaka has been refurbished very beautiful. at first some pictures of the acropolis from beneath and the surrounding area...

Trip to India, in California
by DoomsDave- 21 replies

Howdyall: There is so much to eat out here, it's a miracle I don't weight two thousand pounds. Yesterday (Sunday) went to an Indian buffet in Diamond Bar, where Indians congregate, like they do in India. Well, almost. Here's the infamous Peacock restaraunt and banquet place, I've been going there for more than twenty years now, thinking makes me feel old, but eating that glorious chow -- in large amounts -- makes me feel twenty-some-damn-thang again.

Trip to J.W. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge
by PalmatierMeg- 7 replies
My brother and sister-in-law drove down from Raleigh NC for a quick visit at the end of January. My SIL is an avid gardener specializing in Japanese maple and is delving into landscape design. So we wanted to take them on garden-oriented tours. First, we took them to the Ding Darling National Wildlife Reserve, which takes up a large chunk of upscale Sanibel Island. J.W. Ding Darling was a local editorial cartoonist early in the last century who pioneered protection of native animals and habitats when land speculators and developers aimed to hack Old Florida down and cover it with winter getaways for Yankees. For reference watch the 1929 Marx Brothers' movie "Cocoanuts". I…

Traveled to my old place of residence a week ago Sunday. Back in 1986 I moved to Highland, just east of the city of San Bernardino, in San Bernardino county. First, an ad for Corona Beer in 7-11, in La Habra, as I bravely sally forth. On my sortie.

Trip to the local plant show in Manila 1 2 3

Actually more on the commercial section than anything. It was The Orchid Show so I didn't really go there for the exhibit -- and even if the commercial stalls were mostly geared towards flowers and orchids some palms and other interseting stuff gets thrown in in the mix. General view going in.

Trip to Townsville Queenslad

I went to Townsville last August by train. Here are a few photos form Queens Park and a few around town. I will post others from Andersons Park and the Paletum later. Townsville is a dry tropical city with about 1100mm of rain a year which falls mainly in 3-4 months. They have a good water supply and it is put to good use to keep the place looking green. I hope you enjoy the pickies. I enjoyed my stay very much. Veiw through coconuts to Magnetic Island Pacificas along the beach rows Livistonia lanuginosa in a small park clumps of Cyrtostachys renda in Queens Park

Tropical garden design in Ceylon's 50's
by doranakandawatta- 1 reply

I have been told that Yahala Kele Estate's garden (not far from Horana) where Che Guevara came in 1959 has been designed by Bewis Bawa, the older brother of Geoffrey Bawa and the owner and creator of Brief Garden, a place everyone can visit near Bentota ( see some of my older posts with search engine : Brief Garden). I feel that the frame of the garden is still interesting and it reminds me that Bewis Bawa's design could have been an inspiration source for Made Wijaya, the famous australian balinese garden designer who visited Ceylon and was a friend of Bewis, Geoffrey Bawa and Donald Friend, australian artist. It would be a dream to replant and restore this lov…

Truckin' Around Ken Johnson's 'Hood part I
by DoomsDave- 38 replies
- 1.8k views
Howdyall: On January 1, 2008, Ken took me along on a trip to one of the upper Keys to look at some plants to acquire, but before we did, we drove around his neck of the woods a bit. I suspect that South Floridians get used to their home, but, as an outsider, I was in hawg-heaven. Some, yea, many of these pics aren't well-focused. Sort of a Monet effect . . . . (Apologies to those offended . . . . . ) To paraphrase Jane Goodall, I think . . . They were magnificent. These Royal Palms in the mist.

Tsimbazaza in Antananarivo
by elHoagie- 21 replies
- 12.2k views
This is probably the last of the palm photos I'll post from my trip to Madacascar. These were all taken at the Tsimbazaza in the capital city of Antananarivo. The Tsimbazaza was originally a military base, then a botanical garden, and now a zoo and museum. I think the garden was started about 75 years ago, so there are a lot of mature specimens. The capital is located almost in the center of the country at an elevation of 1200m. My guide said the temperatures drop below 5C sometimes, and she's seen light frost. It was pretty cool most of the time I spent in the capital, probably 20C during the day. Here's a picture of my wife and I under a mature Dypsis decipie…

Rolling North to Orlando for a Hearing. I was late so I was only able to focus with a few not to good drive-by shots but it gives an idea of the substantial difference in temperatures in inland Florida that are uneffected by Heat Islands obvious as you arrive in Orlando, which is inland also: Leaving: Heading North:
