I had been invited with short notice to journey on south to Key West, Florida to join Jeff Searle and his brother Larry for the 14th Annual Palm Sale at Nancy Forrester's Secret Garden. After many years of listening to Jeff's plethora of stories regarding this event, I found myself fortunate enough to be …

I drove out to my friend's farm today to pick up some plants that I ordered from him. While I was there, I went down into his rainforest area to check out some palms again. I've posted a pic of his Cyrtostachys renda a few times before. This time I'm in the photo for scale. I'm 6'1" Some colorful crotons along the path to the rainforest area.

His most famous 2 books that he wrote were on Crotons. (Codiaeum variegatum) His first book on this colorful group of plants is named; Florida's Beautiful Crotons. It was published in 1960 and is now a hard to find collectors book. His second book was then written in the mid 90's sometime. This is the entrance to his nursery.

A week in Costa Rica 1 2

The first week of December we took a trip to Costa Rica to the beach at Manuel Antonio. Since Jeff had posted so many great pictures of the area it looked like a good option. It was a great trip, but not without it´s difficluties. The first problem was when we went to get our flight on Copa Airlines to Panama City and found out that we needed Yellow Fever vaccination cards. It was an over sight and we were not told by the travel agent. Both Raquel and I had been vaccinated in the past 10 years, but neither had cards. Our son Caio had his stamped in his vaccination booklet. So, we had to get the Brazilian vaccination cards and then get the International card from th…

Adelaide Botanical Gardens 1 2
by Daryl- 44 replies

I just got back from a couple of days working down in Adelaide, South Australia. Adelaide never gets much of a mention when it comes to palms in Australia. I too was curious, so decided to check out the local Botanical Gardens this morning before hitting the office. Adelaide is situated on the southern coastline of Oz, at about 35 degrees south, and has a Mediterranean type of climate with dry summers and moist, mild winters. They only very rarely get a light frost and the coastal plains there are quite mild compared to the hilly inland areas. I guess the climate is similar to parts of California, Europe and South Africa. The total rainfall for the year is about 540…

Adventure at the Osa Peninsula 1 2

A friend of mine from Pennsylvania came to visit me last week. This is her second trip to Costa Rica as she visited me this same time last year and we went to the Arenal Volcano, the Hanging Bridges, and Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve. Some of you may remember that post a year ago. This year we decided we would go to the Osa Peninsula. I've been wanting to visit this area of Costa Rica for a long time and I was really looking forward to it. We researched a few places online and then I let my friend decide on a place and make the arrangements. She chose a lodge called Poor Man's Paradise which is south of Drakes Bay on the Pacific coast of the Osa. This place has no…

In April 2009, i went with some friends to the discovery of the High Mataroni River in French Guiana. A unique botanical experience recounted in an article in the french magazine "Le Palmier" in June 2009. An adventure you can imagine, full of botanical discoveries. You will find on the site Tipalm.fr, at http://www.tipalm.fr/pages/mataroni.html, many pictures of this expedition. You can also download the article (in french), made available on this page, courtesy of the Association des Fous de Palmiers. Aerial photos

Last April at the end of the dry season, some friends of mine took a helicopter ride to view some properties in this area of Costa Rica. I had forgotten all about these pics until I was searching for a different photo and found them again. I wasn't on the helicopter ride, I was over in San Jose at the time so I missed out. My friend took these photos. There was quite a bit of glare on the windows of the chopper, sorry about that. Here the helicopter was right over the houses on this property. The house with the red roof is the Quad House (where I live). The house surrounding the pool is the Bali House (you can't see most of it). The Quad House From a …

I was invited to participate in the Manaus American Football training session at a recreationsl center close to my house by the head coach of the team. I played football in high school in Great Falls, Montanat many years ago. That is 1968 to 1970. We had the state championship team. Some guys here in Manaus have formed a footbal team and are going to Brasilia in 2 months for the national American Football Championship. They have no gear and have sort of invented there own rules. It was an experience. And, the place is full of African Oil Palms. Palms

Afternoon in Leu

Hi all, I took a stroll through Leu gardens on Monday and was amazed as I had never seen it before. Here are some photos I took of interesting things and I have some questions to go along with them! I was amazed by how big the Arenga engleris were! How old do you think a 12 footer is? The way that Leu uses chiniensis and saribus to create a tropical jungle feel is amazing... I am now working on this in my yard.

Ahhh....Summer is Great

Summer is here, well and truly, and I'm loving it! Although not extremely hot, like you poor, poor Australians, it is comfortable, around 25-32oC. I'm going to give you a few pictures of my recent trip over to the Golden Bay (see map) area of NZ. This is a truly beautiful area, full of History, fascinating landscapes, and friendly people. First, a basic history lesson for you. Golden Bay was the sight of the first European visit to New Zealand, when Dutchman Abel Tasman came in 1642. Around four of his men were killed by the understandably hostile native Maori tribes, so this area was originally named Murders Bay by him. It then progresses a few years to the …

Amazon Life 1 2

Since many of you expressed your interest in life in my part of the world and my scenes of everday life I decided to do another thread. I am driving back and forth from Manaus to Boa Vista now and spending more time on the road than at home lately. The 775 km trip takes me from the end of the equatorial winter season in Manaus to the start of the Equatorial winter season in Roraima. It is interesting what a simple trip across the Equator does to the seasons. I have been out on the road for a week now. My little lady Raquel came north with me last Monday and went back to Manaus on Saturday. I will probably be home by Thursday some time. We first came up to Boa Vista…

Amazon Life Volume II
by amazondk- 39 replies

The main landscape feature of Manaus is the Negro River. The Rio Negro is I believe the river with the second largest volume of water after the Amazon. The river reaches a width of about 8 kms as it flows slowly past Manaus. And, at its deepest point is around 100 meters deep. It is a tremendous amount of water. The water is black much like a tea from acids leached out of the forest over thousands of square kms over it's course. In Brazilian geography the Amazon starts being called the Amazon at the meeting of the waters of the Negro and the Solimões (called by the rest of the world the Amazon) in Manaus. We will be going up the river where my wifes father lives an…
