Bonnet House, Fort Lauderdale
by buzzmonkey- 6 replies

I know South Florida is getting pretty over-played, but I don't get out of town all that often these days and this place really is pretty luscious so I'm calling it a travel log. The Bonnet house is a historical (c. 1920's) estate on Fort Lauderdale Beach. It preserves a small patch of tropical maritime hammock, a troop of feral squirrel monkeys, feisty swans and some pretty tropicaliscious landscapes. I hope you enjoy. Booyah! FPS meeting #1!

Well, it was good to meet everyone. We learned that the questionably palmy university campus here in Tallahassee is seeking to increase the number of palms on its grounds by not removing volunteer Sabals, and through new plantings such as this one:

Borneo

Am traveling to Borneo (Sabah only) in a couple of weeks on a birding tour. Most of our time will be spent checking out birds but, never having been there, we don't know much about what other stuff to be on the lookout for. I'll try to get pix of palms and other plants...also Orangs and other mammals, reptiles etc. Any suggestions?

Borneo Palms in Habitat 1 2 3 4

The upcoming biennial has motivated me to post some pictures from a trip my wife, Mary, and I took to Borneo a couple of years ago. Part of our trip hit some of the same destinations planned for the biennial, but there’s so much to see – and so many palms – that it was an easy decision to return with the palm society this year. If anyone is still wondering about whether to sign up, perhaps these shots will help you get you off the fence. Let’s start with Bako National Park which figures to be a highlight of the biennial. Sandy beaches, lush rainforest, golden cliffs, and fantastic palms. Here’s Mary and me on one of those beautiful beaches in Bako with Oncosperma tig…

I want to show you some more pictures of the 100 years old Botanical Garden of Kisantu, Bas-Congo. The quality of the pictures is rather mediocre because they were already taken 6 years ago with my first digital camera. So it is more a documentary report of a maybe rather unknown corner of the world. As there are neither descriptions nor guides in the parc and I am not expert enough, you must identify yourself what you see. Wolfgang

Howdyall: I spend a morning with Ray from Tampa, he went out of his way, his dad was a doctor, and his palm garden weathered the hard freezes, yeah, buddy Seriously hard! The only crownshafted palm on the place was a King, and not too damn kingly I might add. But, still, enjoy, especially, those of you from places where palms won't usuallyu grow . . . . dave

Braheas in Northern Mexico
by utile- 6 replies

Several of the palms in my garden came from an expedition to find and study different Brahea species in Northern Mexico. The trip started in Calexico, California side attempting to sleep in my van with 103 degrees at midnight. The next morning I picked up a Mexican train bound for Los Mochis with buddy Ed Green. Don't ever do this!!! It is hot as hell going across the desert on a slow train with no air conditioning. They serve cold drinks in the daytime and when the air conditioner finally comes on at night they rent you blankets! Glad to leave Los Mochis we rented a car and headed north. Somewhere near Alamo (a cute rustic town) we headed out to the hills …

Brazil nuts, Pupunha, Varzea, C46

Here are a few shots from my trip over to Itacoatiara this week. The city is 260 kms by road from Manaus and at about KM 200 there is a very large Brazil nut tree plantation. The owners have planted around 1 million trees with many of them being grafted for better fruit production. They are experimenting with plantation trees for lumber as well as fruit. The wood of the Brazil nut is of excellent quality. In order to protect this important element of the forest harvesting Brazil Nut trees is not permitted. But, plantation trees are ok. I think there is a lot of potential in our region for this tree. It grows fast, tall, and aside from wood produces great nuts. In…

I visited brazil in march. I had been planning on posting this for a long while, but I never had time. It was an experience of a lifetime. I will warn you that I did not take many photos of palms. I visited Rio De Janeiro, The Amazon River, and Iguacu Falls. Welcome to Brazil! We spent our first part of the trip at the breathtaking Iguacu Falls. They are even more impressive in person. They are not as tall as some other waterfalls around the world, but they are HUGE.

Here's a few pics from a trip we made to QLD last year around late Oct to Nov starting at Brisbane and ending in Cooktown. These pics are from Mt Cootha Botanic Gardens, probably one of the best palmy places on Earth IMO. A must see if ever you can get there. This is the entrance and a great stand of D lutescens.

While at the PACSOA show in Brisbane, Qld today, I thought I'd take a look at the adjacent Mt Cootha Botanical Gardens. Its been almost 20 years since I visited the gardens, so it was good to have a look and check out some of the new additions. Brisbane City

I recently setup the IT for our new Brisbane office, and now have the pleasure of doing the commute from the Gold Coast once a week. So I thought I'd fire up the trusty digicam and take a few photos from 'around town' seeing as I'm not a 'local'. Here are a few different ones from last week. Over the coming weeks I'll keep adding more from my lunchtime travels... Stopped over near Kangaroo Point (or the cliffs near it) and took this photo overlooking downtown BNE As you can see it sits on the banks of the Brisbane River..nice and brown after the recent rains, although it is one of those rivers that is always brown This is the City Botanical Gardens, jus…
