Palm photos

I have made Webshots files for two groups of photos: (1) pictures taken during the Biennial in Santo Domingo; and (2) pictures taken during the October 2006 Amazon field trip. They can be viewed at: http://community.webshots.com/user/mmerritt113 While I do have pictures of trip happenings and human interest, most pictures are of the palms. No reflection on recent postings (from which I downloaded) is intended, just wanted to indicate what's in the files. Also, I include photos of less than stellar quality when they convey useful information not available in any other photo. Good viewing!

Travels with Colin
by Daryl- 37 replies

Colin (palmsforpleasure) spent the last few days travelling around SE Queensland, prior to presenting a travelogue to the Brisbane Palm and Cycad Society tonight. His lovely wife Denise accompanied him, and he spent time travelling with Wal, myself and Mike (newcal) to some of the nicer gardens and areas in this neck of the woods. The weather was great, we saw plenty of great palms and enjoyed many a beer and BBQ together. Here's a few photos of our trip to Springbrook on the Gold Coast hinterland. This is a mountain plateau at about 4000ft elevation, and contains some great rainforest, along with three native palm species. Colin and Denise arrive...bearing gifts! …

Royal Palm Ranch
by amazondk- 5 replies
I drive by this ranch all the time as I go over to work on our business in Itacoatiara, 260 kms from Manaus. This time I decided to stop and take a picture. I think it has a great setting surrounded by forest, babaçu palms (Attaleas) with some nice royal palms in the yard. The road is on a high crest at this point and looks down at the place. You can also notice our winter weather pattern sky. It seems the rainy season has started. We get a few days like this and then 3 or 4 sunny ones. It is nice to see the temperature go down a bit. dk

Coconuts in Rio Formoso
by Gileno Machado- 32 replies

We had some friends from England visiting our home in Sirinhaém last saturday and we decided to rent a small motorboat to show them around the river mangroves and coconuts near the mouth. This friend is a retired journalist of BBC and his wife is a children books writer and publisher in UK. They are now seriously planning to buy a summer house in my neighborhood to spend a few months each year among our coconuts...let's see...

This day is in fact in 3 stages, three garden visits. the first being Palm fascinations in nambour, see that thread, the second visit was at a members dry garden in caboolture featuring fantastic succulents, agaves, cycads etc. The third visit was to a members residence in a suburban garden in Brisbane itself. An amazing garden for an inner city suburb. Here's some of the photos I took. Sorry, I'm having problems with Photobucket, I'll get back soon.

Some of you may remember one of my posts from early last year on the old board regarding a landscaping job I was involved in, with my mate Newcal. We got to spend some time in Nth Queensland, planting some desirable palms etc. It looks like the original post was a casualty of the old forum's crash, so my 'before' photos are no longer. Anyway, here are some updated ones to illustrate the growth obtained in 18 months with a good climate...despite a brush with Cyclone Larry, which went through just to the north. Daryl. Pritchardia pacifica (doubled in size) and Euterpe oleracea

Some more road side shots
by amazondk- 15 replies
- 1.4k views
Since I have received a lot of positive input on some of my roadside shots I have a few more. And, I would like to thank Gileno for his documentation of his trip. I find it a good way to make the trip more interesting looking for palm and related shots. This trip we took up to Boa Vista, Roraima leaving early Monday morning and returning on Saturday this week. The trip to Boa Vista is on BR 174 and is about 800 kms. If the road were in good shape it would be an easy trip. Unortunately like many Brazilian highways the highway is a mess. The holes sometimes look like they will swallow your car. This highway was only paved 6 years ago and is already in a sad state of …

Country road palms
by Gileno Machado- 36 replies

I had a short business trip yesterday to Escada and Primavera, two small towns ~80 Km southwest of Recife. On my way back I decided to go to the beach in Sirinhaém to check my palms. I took a few pictures of wild grown and cultivated palms, mostly amidst the oceanic sugarcane plantations and small Atlantic forest preserves near the local roads, driving through typical "Zona da Mata" environment:

Some palms and other scenes on the Road
by amazondk- 30 replies
I drove over to Itacoatiara, 260 kms by road down the Amazon River for a meeting today. On the way I took a few shots of palms and other sites along the road. I hope you enjoy a little look around Amazonas again. Cocos nucifera plantation. Manaus is a large consumer of coconuts and more and more are being planted along the road. There is a Astrocaryum vulgare in the forground. The day was hot as normal this time of year. I had lunch on a restaurant on the Amazon River. At this point the river is around 100 meters in many places and ocean going vessels sail with no trouble. This is the low water season as you can tell by the visible channel. This is th…

Common Palm with Thai House
by Kom Thai Palm- 35 replies

In my previous topic I refer to Nypa Fruticans. Would like to show they match with 'Antique Thai House'. In the past Thai People build their house and live near the river and Nypa can found everywhere that have swamp/river. Nowadays Nypa still a common palm in Thailand, but I love them
