The Palmetum going forward 1 2

Dear friends, This will be a pictorial thread so I will start with a brief announcement. The new unofficial website in English is ready: http://www.pacsoa.org.au/places/SantaCruz/index.html There you will find all the fresh information that I will not repeat here. Here are few words to introduce the incoming pictures. In 2007, the Palmetum de Santa Cruz de Tenerife resurrected in many ways and I directed different works, from April 2007 until present. Thanks to the Government of the Canary Islands and the City Hall of Santa Cruz, we replaced the largest part of the watering system and planted about five hectares (12 acres) of new gardens. We put 58 new…

The Turrialba Volcano 1 2
by Jeff in St Pete- 56 replies

My friend (and employer) surprised me and came to Costa Rica on a last minute trip. He asked me to fly over to San Jose to pick up a camera and a new wireless router he brought down for me, and also just to hang out with him for the weekend at his other house in Escazu. He brought his son this time and they wanted to do something new on this trip so on Saturday morning we drove out to Turrialba to see the volcano. This is one of the least visited volcanoes in the country and I'm sure the road going up there has something to do with it. You definitely need a large 4WD vehicle or you will not make it up this mountain. This was my first time visiting this area of Costa …

in may jes & i travelled to san jose del cabo in baja california for the wedding of some friends. jes' parents were kind enough to give us a room at the raintree resort for the week. the wedding was held at the cabo surf hotel(also in san jose del cabo),which was about 2 miles north of our hotel. the anticipation builds. nice weather in SD,its hard to leave sometimes. i entertain myself by taking random shots of our fellow passengers, many who we'd get to know later at the wedding. always dress warmly for your flight.

A week in Costa Rica 1 2
by amazondk- 55 replies
- 4.4k views
The first week of December we took a trip to Costa Rica to the beach at Manuel Antonio. Since Jeff had posted so many great pictures of the area it looked like a good option. It was a great trip, but not without it´s difficluties. The first problem was when we went to get our flight on Copa Airlines to Panama City and found out that we needed Yellow Fever vaccination cards. It was an over sight and we were not told by the travel agent. Both Raquel and I had been vaccinated in the past 10 years, but neither had cards. Our son Caio had his stamped in his vaccination booklet. So, we had to get the Brazilian vaccination cards and then get the International card from th…

Hi Everyone, well, the ratpack whirlwind tour of the Top End of the Northern Territory (OZ) is over. We all arrived safely home this morning, except for Wal, who is lucky enough to stay in Darwin for a few more days. One of the more memorable occasions on our 3 day tour was finding large stands of Hydriastele ramsayi (formerly Gronophyllum). This is a majestic palm that grows in open woodland under extreme heat conditions. When we were there yesterday, we measured the temperature and humidity with a highly accurate electronic scientific thermometer. At the time it was 39C (102F) with 40% relative humidity...stifling temperatures. Everything was hot to the touch, and th…

Rat Pack - Darwin Botanical Gardens 1 2
by Daryl- 54 replies
- 6.3k views
Yet another Rat Pack thread... Darwin has a magnificent Botanical Garden which has been in existence for donkey's years, yet does not rank highly on the popularity scales when it comes to 'notable public palm collections' in Oz. However, it is a treasure trove of palms, with many fine examples throughout the gardens. Darwin's monsoonal tropical climate allows just about any species of palm to be grown there, except for the cool zone palms. The head curator for many years was George Brown, who planted many species in his time there. The gardens have now been named in his honour due to his contribution, and later his role as Mayor of Darwin. Here are a few photos …

Manaus a tropical city of contrasts 1 2
by amazondk- 54 replies
- 3.1k views
I drive around the city of Manaus quite a bit and the contrasts and history of the city always draw my attention. I would like to share a bit of this with you and hope you find it interesting. Today Manaus is a modern city of around 2 million inabitants which has most of the characterstics of any larger Brazilian city. But, due to the cities isolation it also has a few differences. For one the urban violence so common in cities to the south is a lesser problem. The city is a mix of older buildings dating from the 19th century, sprawling unorganized neighborhoods, and modern apartment buildings and up scale housing developments. Due to the industrial district loc…

A big, PSSC Thank-You! to Messrs. De Jong and Luna! 1 2

As you know, a PSSC meeting and garden tour were held at the San Clemente gardens of Bob de Jong (pogobob) and Rick Luna, in alphabetical and visiting order, on Saturday, Novemeber 20, 2010. Both gardens are in San Clemente, way down south in farthest OC, right before you cross over in SD. Say you, say me, say for always, it's so palmeee . . . . Neither garden is very large, but, well, jewel boxes aren't large either, but you still love the jewels. These gardens have no equal for large New Caledonian palms, in their marvelous coastal climate. As Paul and Terry noted, a very large crowd showed up in spite of rain (Guada La Habra was pouring cats, dogs, and preh…

I apologize for any duplication by not reading recent posts - I've cut down on my reading of the news since they discontinued the funny papers. In any case, my wife is off to an oncology conference in LA the last half week in October. I wasn't going with her until our Leno tickets arrived in the mail yesterday. What are the can't-miss palm attractions for a man and his rent car? Steve

Gizella Kopsick Palm Arboretum 1 2

I recently spent a morning at our local palm arboretum in St Petersburg, FL. I posted some pics on the IPS Facebook page, but thought I would post all of them here. It's a beautiful place located on the waterfront among other public spaces which include several different parks, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a beach, jogging/biking paths, a Pier, and plenty of free parking. I first visited the arboretum in 1994 and have watched it evolve and grow over the years. It's a must see for palm enthusiasts visiting the Tampa Bay area. It's open every day and it's free of charge. For more information click here http://www.stpeteparksrec.org/gizella-kopsick-arboretum.html …

A quick business trip to Eastern BoliviaL 1 2
by amazondk- 52 replies
- 3.1k views
Last Wednesday through Friday I took a a quick trip to the Eastern Bolivian provinces of Pando and Beni. I went with our customer from the States to check out sources of FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified wood for some projects of his. Bolivia has the largest area of Certified tropical forests in the world. These forests are concessions granted to local businessmen for sustainable forestry. By being FSC Certified a company has an external audit to assure proper forestry practices. This mechanism assures that the forest is harvested in a sustainable manner and that the local people are also benefited from the activitiy. The area we went to see belongs to a gen…

Rat Pack - Litchfield National Park NT 1 2
by Daryl- 52 replies

On Saturday we drove out to Litchfield National Park. This is about 1.5 hours from the centre of Darwin, and contains some nice waterfalls, as well as rainforest areas. Most of the park is very dry and rocky, but the seepage from the plateaux allows pockets of rainforest to flourish. Palms in the park include Livistona humilis, Carpentaria acuminata and Hydriastele wendlandiana. The L.humilis is very common in the Darwin region, and there must be millions of individual plants. You will see many Phoenix canariensis on this tour:

La Belle, Florida, County Seat of Hendry County 1 2
by DoomsDave- 51 replies

Howdyall: After my first arrival in Fort Myers and the beginnings of teh serious south, I shot inland to La Belle, which was about thirty miles away. It's the county seat of Hendry County, population 30k or so. A real rural area, butting up against Lake Okeechobee to the east. I expected a real old-Floridy town, and by crackery (pun intended) I found one. This trip was, after all, supposed to be quasi-enlightening. As I roared off inland, I noted some Florida native Zamias being used in the roadway median.
