Want to say thank you to Josh-O

I had the opportunity and honor to get a quick tour of Josh-O's home garden by none other than the man himself. Aside from his excellent and welcoming demeanor, helpfulness, great spirit and alacrity, his garden made me speechless. It is fantastically well organized. I was beside myself looking at the exquisite specimens he has in his premises. I should have taken pictures. He has such wonderful exemplars of select palms and dypsis, one can only begin to fathom what he has in his Vista Nursery. Here again Josh-O, thank you for the tour. Hidden tropical paradise in Carlsbad. Alex

Seychelles recommendations please

Hello fellow palmateers, I'm going to be in the Seychelles in October and November this year. Besides the Vallée de Mai, what sights should I plan to see? Which trails, parks, islands, will offer interesting flora and fauna and geology—including, of course, palms? I'll be on Mahé, Praslin, La Digue, and Silhouette. Thank you! Jason

Here's what I'm looking at, trying to figure out how to divide up days. Note that some of these days are fixed because of the flight schedules, but others are more flexible as to what to do, what order to do things, etc. Day 1: Arrive in Tana from Paris Days 2-6: Morondava, Kirindy, Tsingy de Bemaraha. Not a whole lot of palms, but the Tsingy is, from all accounts, totally awesome. I can't wait to see it. Also, we plan to see the Avenue of the Baobabs on the outskirts of Morondava. Day 7 (Fixed): Head out to Perinet Reserve, stay in Perinet Days 8-14: Some combination of Perinet, Ranomafana, Isalo, ending up in Tulear on Day 14. My current inclination is …

Praslin on the hill

We stayed only 2 days in Praslin since we came for the Vallée de Mai and had to go back to garden work in Doranakanda gardens, but we enjoyed this small island. Here some pics of the atmosphere of the island (very curious, we walked all the 8 km from Vallée de Mai to our guesthouse, so we saw what is on the roadside)

About a month ago I began my two week Hawaiian vacation by flying into Honolulu airport. While I was walking down the upper level of Terminal 1 to go get my suitcase at baggage claim, I happened to see a very nice looking Hawaiian park area below : At the time, I was also too tired to investigate further (being jet lagged from New York) , but resolved myself to check it out on my departure, if I had the time. Flash forward two weeks later, when I returned to Daniel K. Inouye International Airport on my way back home, and had time to spare for a little visit. There where of course many palms there, as well as other interesting tropical looking plants. Unfor…

Queen Kapi'olani Garden, Honolulu, Hawaii
by Nomad NYC- 1 reply

In the beginning of my recent Hawaiian vacation, I managed to stumble upon a little park called the Queen Kapi'olani Garden in Honolulu while walking from my hotel at Waikiki to hike up at Diamondhead national park: The Garden seems to be botanical in nature, but examples of the labeling of the plants are far and few ( so I will be guessing their identity, unless they are specifically labled ). I'm not a big Pritchardia expert, so not sure what kind of Pritchardia palm species this is below. I think it looks like Pritchardia Kaalae.... Or maybe a Koolau Range Pritchardia ( Pritchardia Martii )? I believe that the Pritchardia …

In Kalawana is a place for an Indiana Jones palmaddict! Seeing the palms from underneath the roots! You can enter under the hill, in such a chaos of boulders, due to some strange geological phenomena... and after more than one hour trip, you emerge in the middle of a tea plantation! The coconut palms of Florida...winter dreaming:

I thought palm lovers would like these pictures. In the cold season I often make my way south down the coast and end up somewhere on the east coast of Florida. The coconut palms seem to start in north -central Florida near Coco-Beach area. There is nothing like taking pictures of coconut palms on a winter day. LOL. Some random pictures:

Strickland Forest Reserve, Gosford, New South Wales, Australia

A beautiful pre xmas walk in a really beautiful spot of Australia. This was literally a 5 min drive from my cousins house. She lives in suburbia but australia is great at creating reserves and protecting small patches like this. Heaps of Livistona australis and Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. Still think that Livistona australis syn. eungellaensis is totally different and should be separated.. Just saying lol

Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve ( Darwin )

A must see area about 60 klm south east of Darwin. One of the few year round accessible Wetlands in the Top End, home to an amazing variety of Flora and Fauna. I have visited here many times over the years, and the region never fails to impress..... in the 'dry season', the birds and animals tend to congregate around the diminishing waters. Truely a bird watchers paradise. Fogg Dam itself ( and nearby Harrison Dam ) were part of a failed agricultural venture to grow Rice on the Adelaide River floodplains. Fogg Dam was built in the 1950's as an integral part of the Humpty Doo Rice Project. Some interesting reading ..... https://foggdamfriends.org/culture-heritage/mo…

Japan: Ogasawara Islands: Chichijima
by JasonD- 0 replies

My friends took a 25-hour ferry trip from their home in Tokyo south to the subtropical Ogasawara Islands (which are administered as part of Tokyo Prefecture!). The main island is called Chichijima. The history of settlement and political control is complicated, with American whalers settling there before the Japanese arrived. Here's Jared's blog about seeing Livistona and Clinostigma in habitat. He says, "Both have very simple common names in Japanese: biroyashi, which means fan palm or Chinese fan palm, and noyashi, a feather palm..." The next time I visit them in Japan they've promised to remake the trip with me.

Wild Silver Serenoa Repens in Beaufort County, SC?!
by clinenotklein- 0 replies

I've lived in Hilton Head area for literally decades and never noticed any of the native Serenoa Repens being even remotely Silver until I stumbled across these today. What's interesting to note is I found them in an area just east of Bluffton before the Bridge to Hilton Head, an area unusually subtropical looking for even Southern Beaufort County, which has more in common with Florida than the rest of the state. Note the super limey ones on the far right to get a sense of contrast. These even have bluish tints. All obviously wild based on how they sit on the land.

See Christians thread under "Discussing Palm Trees Worldwide" for photos and story. You would be surprised at the palms they are growing there. The variegated Needle Palm impressed me the most, along with variegated specimens of other plants. Even though it rained everyday, it didn't stop this group of palm people from seeing what the area had to offer.
