As you may have already read, the PSSC's most recent meeting took place in Orange County, beginning at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley, with the second half at the home of Ralph Velez. I thought it was late, Paul thought it was early............................................................We agreed on a coffee stop. At the north end of San Diego County in Oceanside, we picked up Terry who had decided to test his mettle with a PRA. Now we're ready to roll.

My weekend at "The Hoagies" 1 2
by MattyB- 62 replies

While working in Los Angeles last weekend the Hoagies were nice enough to let me stay with them. They are the nicest folks you'd ever want to meet and I am truely blessed to have friends like them. Here's some fun pics of the weekend. Friday night we went out to dinner at a Brazilian eatery but I forgot my camera so we pick up back at the house, just in time for shots! Jack (El Hoagie), Myself, and Danny (Palmazon) get the first smell of some Vodkaskot, the national drink of Iceland. Jack should have left that stuff in Iceland dude! It was like licorish and salt water with some extra deisel fuel added. Ok, pre-shot photo op. Down the hatch!

HIPS garden tour 7 June 2009 1 2
by bgl- 61 replies
- 10.6k views
Hawaii Island Palm Society hosted a garden tour at Ho'owaiwai this afternoon. This is one of the great gardens in Hawaii. It was started by Liloa Willard almost 20 years ago and and is now a mature garden, spreading out over an entire valley and some of the surrounding areas. Several Forum members were in attandance, so I'm sure we'll have plenty of photos. It's getting late here, so I'm just going to get this thread going with a few photos. With more to come tomorrow. (And for the rest of those who were present - feel free to add your photos here, unless you want your own thread...! ). Entrance from Ka'ie'ie Homestead Road, about two miles up from Highway 19.

OK, so I got back from a three week trip to Laos and Cambodia. I took a few palm pictures and figured I would show some from their natural environment. First up is Livistona Saribus in Laos. Here is what they look like naturally clean when pushing out past canopy. No way to get scale since it was like 80 feet or taller. Close up Baby one on Jungle floor

Steves Place 1 2

Here are some pics of Steve in SoCal's place in Fallbrook. Probably barely a quarter of what he has growing, so I"ll have to get more pics the next time I go. As usual the pics don't do it justice. His collection of succulents is incredible. He will have to help with names because there were too many for me to remember. I did not get that many pics of his palms (too awestruck by the agaves) so I will have to get them on round two. Enjoy 1

Bamboo Land at Howard, Sth East Queensland 1 2
by Walter John- 61 replies

Big trip up the highway on Saturday took us to the famous Bamboo Land garden and nursery at the township of Howard between Maryborough and Childers. Of all the bamboo places I've sussed out, this joint is way out in front for product (species availability) , garden (live specimens) , price and advice/help. I can't speak highly enough of this place, it is an absolutely amazing, awe inspiring place. And it's free to visit, with a donation cup nearby which we gladly gave to. This is worth the drive dear ratpackers and others from the SE Qld community. Not that many photos unfortunately as I was too busy enjoying it. Gigantochloa Robusta Famous/favorite white bamb…

From Manaus to Iquitos and Back 1 2
by amazondk- 60 replies
- 7.8k views
I left Manaus last Wednesday on a 1 PM flight from Manaus to Iquitos, Peru with a group of associated on a mission to start up a monthly barge service to and from Iquitos, Peru from Manaus. The barge company belongs to a friend of mine and he asked me to lend a hand securing the backhaul export business to Manaus. The idea is to send 40 foot ocean containers up to Porto Velho, Rondonia via the Amazon and Madeira rivers. From their load the 82 containers on the two barges and then return back to Manaus and up the Solimões (Amazon River) to Iquitos, Peru. Once in Iquitos load the container with wood, mostly destined to Mexico and deliver them to the container vessel in …

Kebun Raya Bogor, Indonesia 1 2

While visiting in Jakarta, I took a side trip to Bogor (~1.5 hour drive) to visit the botanical garden. I am sure some of you have been here before. I am not going to post a lot of pictures here as I am not satisfied with the picture quality. I was using a borrowed camera, since my wife took the good one with her and the palms did not photograph well against overcast mid-day sky. You can peruse the entire album if you wish. For reference, on named palms I tried to take a picture of the name before the palm, but unfortunately not always. I will make no attempt at naming unlabled palms as I am not qualified to do so. Identifications are welcome of course! Intere…

Bela Vista Update 1 2
by amazondk- 59 replies

Yesterday we went over to our place in Paricatuba on the other side of the Negro River. It has been a while since I have been there, Mother's day to be exact. I had some problems with my car registration which is from Campinas, Sao Paulo. They check your registration when you get on the ferry boat and since mine was messed up I have not been going. But, that is now fixed so work should be happening at a better pace. So far I have 3 African oil palms and 5 coconuts planted. But, I have a whole forest of trees growing here in Manaus. I really can't say this is a travel log since I did not travel anywhere and it is home. The rain has stopped and it is a good ti…

We just got back from an awesome weekend at the paradise point resort & spa on beautifull Mission bay and it is my new favorite spot in all of San Diego! We were looking for a special place to celebrate my big 50 and it was one of my best birthdays ever! A little background on the joint. Paradise point formerly known as vacation island is technically an isthmus as it is connected by a road but very much feels like an island. It is 44 acres of lush tropical foliage, palms, tennis , boating, 5 pools and spas, waterfalls and water features and last but not least the barefoot bar and grill. There is also fine dining at Baleen resturaunt but were more of take the sushi and…

Down by the river 1 2

A friend of mine is visiting me from FL and instead of going to the beach last Sunday, some of my local friends told me about a swimming spot and we decided to check it out. We packed up the car with coolers full of beverages, food, and snacks and headed on down. As you are heading down the gravel highway, there is a turnoff just before the bridge. This takes you down to another gravel road that runs along the river. This shot is looking back at the bridge. In case you are wondering, those are African Oil Palms on the right hand side of the picture (more of them later). Looking up the river towards the mountains. Clouds were completely blocking the larger …

RBG Kew Palm House 1 2

On my second trip to Kew of 2006, I actually managed to label all of my photos, so I thought I would present some of them here, as some of the species don't seem to get pictured much on the forum. Unfortunately the light levels were quite low on the day, so some of the photos didn't come out as well as I would like, so I'll try to stick with the OK shots. I only had time to visit The Palm House on this occasion, but I have posted quite a few photos from The Temperate House previously anyway. The Heart of Africa 1 2

Dear friends It's already some time ago I visited regularly the Northeast of Congo near the border of Sudan and Central Africa. Many of my pics I already showed you in other threads came from this region. As they found some interest I want to add some more - this time, hopefully, in better resolution. As there is no possibility to reach the region by car every trip starts by plane: Landing on the airstrip of Amadi/ Bas Uele.
