Visit to Chile

Hi All, (Hola a todos ): I'll be in Chile on business in January and February. Mostly in Santiago and La Serena. I was wondering if there were any local contacts or nursery's in the area? It would fantastic to break away and visit some gardens or parks. There was a park featured in an IPS back issue. I can't seem to find it but I think it was La Campana Ocoa??? I think it's within 100 miles of Santiago. Can anyone recommend other points of interest? Thanks, -Matt Rippa

San Diego Zoo Hippo fight - Monkey Umpire steps in
by Walter John- 1 reply

Hello folks, if I didn't see it for myself I would not have believed it. There we were PRA/Ratpack teams united at the zoo, disguised as tourists, (whilst still carrying out our secret palm observation mission) when two dwarf hippos began a full on fight, yes sir, let's go to the videofiles. How much can a Koala bear ? Strange orange bird So, let's go to the hippo fight.. The big guy gets the advantage, children screamed for their mommas, I saw their mommas, I gave a little yell too, meanwhile the fight continued and I was barracking for the underdog, or underhippo. Then the monkey umpire saw a foul, I saw a monkey, so the ump comes…

Spending few days in Serenity Hotel ( it's the real name!) in Kalatuwawa allowed me to enjoy the mountainous jungle around; Caryotas and Arecas, wild ginger... and countryside in the valley: tea and paddy fields, rambutan orchards. Village school Only 4 rooms! I think no guide book indicate the place!

SECOND VISIT TO TASMANIA
by Phoenix Bob- 1 reply

Recently returned from a week's stay in Tasmania where we were guests of Tassie Troy and his wife, Danylle. Both Troy and his wife went far beyond the boundaries of being excellent hosts. Each took time off from work in order to show us some of the fantastic sights Tasmania has to offer visitors from other corners of the world such as my wife and me. We have alway contended that New Zealand is our favorite spot on the planet, but Tasmania is closing in on that number one position. The pristine condition of Australia's southern-most state is superb, and I would suspect that its remote location (250 miles south of mainland Australia) has much to do with its near-perfect…

Pohonkelapa's Bali pics inspired me to post some from my trip in May. I can't identify many of the palms I saw, I'm not a palm expert, but I saw some amazing gardens. Pictures were taken in and near the Komaneka Hotel in Ubud, and Bali Hyatt in Sanur Beach.

South Beach Botanical Garden

Designed by Raymond Jungles, its a decent public park in South Beach a few blocks from the hotel I was staying at. I had been to the memorial next door but did not realise that the gardens were right there. I really enjoy thie influences of Brule Marx in his work, his curves, textures, and geometries all serenade togethere in really nice symphony. Though not many great plants here, I just like the overall design of the park.

Today, climbing Sigiriya rock has been a challenge.... it was raining and slippery. Gladly we can use old iron staircases the british must have built 150 years ago! Thinking that the king had his palace up there in the 12th century is amazing.

Eastern North Carolina Windmill Palms
by Derekjp- 1 reply

Here are some photos of a recent landscaping project at an apartment site that I manage in Eastern North Carolina. We planted around 40-50 small windmill palms and sabel minors around this site. I've tried to do my part to make North Carolina more topical looking, but it's just to cold here! We've added larger Pindo palms at other sites also. I used to have a lot of pictures, but I seemed to have misplaced them so I took these when I traveled 4 hours there this week. I know these palms are boring, but it's the best I was allowed to do in northeastern NC. Since I've been renting I've not been able to grow any palms, but at least I have been able to plant them indirec…

PLus a way-cool orchid collection, and a climate with enough rain in the right place . . . . . Thanks to all for your encouragement! dave
