Mature Palm Tree in Solomons Island, Maryland
by DCA_Palm_Fan- 2 replies

I have been going to Solomons Island, MD for just about all of my adult life. It is a neat little Island community where the Patuxent River empties into the Chesapeake Bay. Very quaint, but fairly popular place to go with a good number of mom and pop shops, restaurants and bars on the water...etc. I first noticed this palm tree sometime around 2000. It is off the beaten path, out towards the end of the Island, somewhat away from where many people go, but not secluded at all. San Salvador, The Bahamas
by AggiePalms- 1 reply

I'm going to be on San Salvador in The Bahamas for a couple of weeks doing marine biology, and I can't seem to find anything specific about the palms from there. I need to know what to look for, so I can give everybody a good inventory of the flora when I get back. Does anybody know what I should find? It isn't a very big island, and quite dry from what I'm told, so I don't know if the Sabals or Roystonea etc. will be common. Also, is there a good online reference to the Caribbean Sabals - I don't want to misidentify the ones I see, but I am no expert on the ones living on that type of dry island. Thanks for any help you can give. I'll give the travelogue when I r…

Last Sunday folks from the Northern California chapter gathered for a meeting at Jim Denz's extraordinary palm garden in Los Altos, California (near San Jose and Palo Alto). Jim's garden is intensely lush, with an extraordinary koi pond generating a tropical atmosphere through the back portion of the property, and with towering established plantings framing the exotic front-side gardens. He is cultivating 90+ species of palms, not to mention numerous unusual subtropical shrubs, succulents, trees, and perennials. Neighbors have incorporated palms into their landscapes as well, surely following Jim's impeccable example. Thanks to local topography, the microclimate allows fo…
