Tetepare Island in the Solomons
by FNQ Marcus- 3 replies
- 1.2k views
A couple of years ago before I got serious about palms I took a bunch of "plant" photos while on Tetepare island in the Solomons. (The largest uninhabited island in the pacific.) Lucky a couple of them featured palms Identifications would be most welcome. It's an amazing place to visit if you like all things green, and am seriously considering going back there in the near future to have another look around. Palms in the Rainforest And More rainfroest with palms Okay... not a palm in sight, but the next best thing - a pandanus and I couldn't leave out our guide Tumi.

We are thinking of visiting St. Lucia next month (May). Anyone been there and can give us any hints? We are thinking of staying at the Ladera, but are having trouble getting reservations. We will also rent a car, so we should be able to get around the island pretty well.

by doranakandawatta- 2 replies

In the hill country , middle of Ceylon, around of Nuwara Eliya, the landscape is either designed by the tea plantations, or by the vegetable gardens where people are still growing cabbage, lettuce, carrots, beetroots, cauliflower and other european vegetables, or even strawberries… the british left in 1948, but their vegetables are still there. I visited friends there and the young guy of the family was happy to show me something rare: artichoke !

I am going to Tampa in a couple months and doubt I will make it to the Miami area (so no Fairchild this trip) and was wondering if there are any palm nurseries in the area that I could visit. I know the good stuff is down south but there has to be some decent nurseries not too far from Tampa.

Rolling North to Orlando for a Hearing. I was late so I was only able to focus with a few not to good drive-by shots but it gives an idea of the substantial difference in temperatures in inland Florida that are uneffected by Heat Islands obvious as you arrive in Orlando, which is inland also: Leaving: Heading North:

Antigua Guatemala

Antigua is this charming town less than an hour outside of Guatemala City. Complete with cobble stone streets, 500 year old cathedrals, volcanoes, art galleries, restaurants and tons of tourists. We started at a posh neighborhood a five minute walk into the center square. Walking the streets. Palms along the way. La Merced and Los Ticos, the day Costa Rica won one of the World Cup playoffs.

LA City Hall Palms

I took these pictures today around LA City Hall where I work. The fishtail palms are huge but I think they are planted too close to the wall. The forest of king palms is gorgeous with tables and chairs on the plaza level. If you notice there is a single fishtail palm amongst the kings and the tree ferns. The plants are around City Hall East and City Hall South, if you look in the background of one of the pictures you can see City Hall Main.

Bogoda bridge is lost in the countryside, in Badulla area. This wooden bridge is more than 400 years old. All parts of this bridge were constructed from wood, including the use of wooden nails as fixing material. The bridge link Badulla and Kandy on an ancient pilgrims route. Facing the bridge are the temple and the monks's house Around Bogoda, the landscape is especially lovely: paddy fields and Areca

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh & Kew Gardens

I had the pleasure of visiting both over consecutive weekends just recently. Edinburgh came at the end of a 5-day break, and Kew the following weekend, being only 30 minutes away. Edinburgh has the most impressive fern house, whilst the famous Lodoicea maldivica dominates the Tropical Palm House. Kew has many more palm species, and with the newly-refurbished Temperate House now open, the Palm House resembles a jungle even more than ever. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Kew Gardens

Miami Zoo palms and other flora and fauna

I chose a great day to visit the Miami Zoo this past week. Heavy rain in the morning kept crowds away and then the sun appeared. Hardly anyone there, nice views to the exhibits and even the animals seemed relaxed without all the commotion. I appreciate how the subtropical climate In Miami allows the plantings to appear so authentic (or at least convincing) to the accompanying native environments of the zoo animals. Photos of Palms and other Tropicals below. Fauna follows at end. And For the lovers of flora and fauna I posted below photos of some of the main attractions. giraffes posing like statues:

There were some fan palms too. Sorry I'm not more of a fan palm person to know if they were Washingtonias, Livistonas, something else. But I figured I had to be the first person on Palmtalk to go to several of these places (at least Turkmenistan), and others might be interested, so here goes: Central Asia Trip Report I hope one or more of you find this helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Justin

Senoran Desert National Monument worth a visit?
by Palmensammler- 2 replies
Hi, My wife and I will be in southern Arizona and New Mexico in autumn. We're starting in Phoenix and will drive south. Is the Senoran Desert National Monument worth to make a detour or is it better to visit only the Saguaro National Park? From what I have seen on Maps there's more or less only the Phoenix Bypass road where you can drive with the RV. Can someone confirm this or tell me if it's worth a drive by visit? Thanks Eckhard
