Jeff Serle's Epic Florida garden 1 2

Howdyall: I only spent an afternoon at Jeff's place, January 2, 2008, but it was one of the most memorable post-New-Year's days I've ever had. After touring his nursery (and having lunch!) Jeff took me to his place west of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County, and all I can say is thanks and it was glorious. On the road in, here's a drive-by shot of a hedgerow of A. wrightii that must have been a quarter mile long, in front of a new development.

CALIF or Bust! 1 2

Look out Southern California......You are about to be invaded by palm heads from the Right coast! Do all San Diego Palm Nurserys have "by appointment only" hours during the week? What's up with that?? Can anyone recommend THE best nurserys to visit (not to be missed) in the S.D. area? How far in advance does one need to make an appointment? XMRadio weather for S.D. call for highs in the 60's. That sounds really cold to me since it's been in the 80's & 90's here in the SE. Should I be packing long sleeves and jeans instead of shorts & halters?

HIPS garden tour 20 Dec 2009 1 2

Hawaii Island Palm Society had scheduled a garden tour today in one of the great palm gardens on the Big Island: Pauleen Sullivan's 11 acre garden in Kapoho, about 45 minutes south of Hilo. Things didn't look too promising - this morning we had just over 9 inches of rain over the previous 36 hour period, and yesterday (Friday) was the most thunder and lightning we've seen in our 14 years here. All day long. Definitely not a good day for sightseeing, or a garden tour. BUT, this morning looked very promising. Clear blue skies and sunny. Then the clouds began to roll in, and a little after 1 p.m. when I left our home in Leilani Estates to drive to Kapoho, less than 15 minute…

Central Florida Palm & Cycad Society Summer Meeting June 23rd, 2007 - Ron Eward Sanctuary, Valkaria, Florida For one brief day, CFP&C Society members, palm enthusiasts, and Forum members traveled from all corners of Florida to meet at the Ron Eward Sanctuary. This meeting held a great time for all and included a garden tour, an auction of rare plants and seed, and a plant sale. It was my second time visiting Ron at his place, and it had changed quite a bit since the last visit, about 2 years earlier. Jeff Searle, Rob Van der Borg and myself traveled from Broward County early in the morning and represented the southern end of the state. We arrived shortly afte…

Today I have some pics of traveling to Prachinburi Thailand, the last Habitat of Corypha lecomtei. Among group of Corypha, C.lecomtei is the most attractive in genus with very long light green black stripped and upright forming petiole. As same as others Corypha, C.lecomtei end their own life after extremely flowering. This way could make them endanger in few century, cause one thing C.lecomtei difference from others, it rarely to see and can be found only in the last habitat here in Prachineburi. Prachinburi is 4hrs east from Bangkok, here is the map we was going to. Let's tour!!!

World Botanical Gardens 1 2

Lanny Neel, Director of World Botanical Gardens at Umauma, invited me for an afternoon at the WBG today. This is on the Hamakua coast north of Hilo, right after the 16 mile marker. Most of the palms were planted in the 1990s, before Lanny joined WBG, and even though many of them still have their original name tags, some of these names have now been changed. Many palms had no name tags to begin with, and my challenge was to name them. We managed to ID a majority of the palms, but there are still a few mysteries and they will be shown as such in this thread. Any feedback & suggestions most welcome! This is the entrance from Highway 19, looking makai (towards the o…

We just got back from another epic adventure to our little slice of paradise on the big island of Hawaii! We brought my son Ty this time and he was a good sport helping us in the garden (a little ) but he was rewarded with many snorkeling and hiking trips to Kona side and beyond. It was'nt all fun and games as we had not been there in a year and in Hawaii weeds grow at warp speed! Here is a Dypsis Decipiens That I planted last year buried in weeds.

Sarawak Palms in Habitat 1 2
by elHoagie- 67 replies

Lindsey and I visited Sarawak for a couple weeks in April. We spent all of our time in National Parks and reserve areas, and we saw a lot of fantastic palms (and amazing animals!). We're still going through all the photos, but I'm going to post the first batch. It was very dark, and very dense in most locations, and so difficult to get "clean" photos of the palms. I have what I think are correct IDs for a large number of the palms we saw, and I know the genera of most of the palms. Some I have no idea... Any help you can provide with IDs would be excellent. I have much higher resolution photos I can send if that would help with an ID... All of the photos from this fir…

Since many of you expressed your interest in life in my part of the world and my scenes of everday life I decided to do another thread. I am driving back and forth from Manaus to Boa Vista now and spending more time on the road than at home lately. The 775 km trip takes me from the end of the equatorial winter season in Manaus to the start of the Equatorial winter season in Roraima. It is interesting what a simple trip across the Equator does to the seasons. I have been out on the road for a week now. My little lady Raquel came north with me last Monday and went back to Manaus on Saturday. I will probably be home by Thursday some time. We first came up to Boa Vista…

I lived in FL (Tampa Bay area) for 12 years and always wanted to attend the Searle Extravaganza. I used to get a postcard mailed to me twice a year reminding me of the sales, but for whatever reason I never made it down there. My friend Bren (Junglegal) was going this year so I made arrangements to meet her in Ft Lauderdale. We stayed at the Hampton Inn Pembroke Pines for the first two nights and had a great time at the sale and at Jeff's house for a tour and dinner afterwards. Jeff's garden is abolutely amazing and the food was delicious! On Saturday Bren headed back to St Pete and I stayed with TikiRick my last night. Rick's place is like something you see in a ma…

I've found a lot of random posts regarding this, so seemed like a good place to start a new thread in hopes others will contribute and share what they see growing around town. This is probably the most beautiful Queen palm I've ever seen, growing in a subdivision on the Northside, New Berlin Road area. Same neighborhood, not sure if it's Adonidia merillii or Wodyetia bifurcata. And this one is my neighbor's tree two blocks away, Butia for sure, not sure what variety. Arlington and Oakwood Rd area And my other neighbor's Butia, says they planted these 30 years ago, completely different look from the one above

These pictures are of Dale Holton and my trip to Belize. We went to have a good time away and to find a new Zamia to photograph youll have to stay tune for more about that Zamia We flew into Belize City and made our way to the capital Belmopan where we stayed at a very nice B&B. Dale has a friend Lou Thomas that sell seeds that lives close to Belmopan that we plan to visit. This is the Southern Highway that we took to Belmopan it goes all the way to Punta Gorda and until recently it was mostly unpaved. Daris, Lou and Dale at Lou's house Pictures from the back porch….. Paid another visit to a local nursery , Heinz was riding around on his mower , so I went to get a pic of his large Areca latiloba . AS I shifted to get the best light , a wopping great big Cassowary came walking by to feast on the fallen Star Fruit , Averrhoa carambola They are regular visitors and often eat much of the palm seed set on his property .
