Big Island Enchantment 1 2 3

Did you ever wake up in the morning, walk outside, and behold a scene like this? Some of you have, I know. You rise early because of the time change and the excitement and anticipation of being somewhere new; you might walk uphill along a strangely quiet road, to encounter scenes like this: Steve and I have returned from a recent visit to Hawaii, the Big Island, and in this thread I will share with you as best I can the feel of being there. Most of the gardens we visited have been shown on the forums again and again, thus I will make no attempt to document the vast array of palm species, though you will get your fill of palm photos. My aim is to convey th…

My friend Linda and I had long planned a diving trip to Belize, but for one reason or another, it was pushed back again and again. Finally last year while in Costa Rica, we committed to a trip this April, and, weak economy or not, we were on our way. We flew to Belize City via San Salvador, and took the first pix at the water taxi station, awaiting the boat to Ambergris Caye where we would hang out for about a week and do our diving.

Well we just got back from our working vacation to our new house in Leilani Estates on the big island. Typical day we were up by 5:00 or 5:30 am. and I worked outside until dark and then came inside and worked on the house until late at night. It was some of the hardest work I've done but also some of the most rewarding!I like to start my morning with a nice cup of coffee so first morning there I'm all ready to go. Coffee maker, check, coffee, check, coffee filters, check, coffee cups...ooops! Oh well... the blender with left over pina colada from last night will do nicely thank you.

San Andres Island 1 2 3

I recently spent 4 days on San Andres Island. The island is located in the Caribbean off the east coast of Nicaragua, but it is controlled by Colombia. The flight from San Jose was only 40 minutes! I purchased an inexpensive package that included airfare, hotel, transfers, food, alcohol, just about everything. I'm not really a fan of all-inclusive hotels, but it was a good way to experience the island for a few days. San Andres is a very popular destination for South Americans. The vast majority of the people staying at the hotel were from Colombia and Argentina along with a few from Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Uruguay. The hotel

Negril, Jamaica 1 2 3

I'm not sure what keeps drawing me back to Jamaica. Is it the beautiful scenery, the spicy food, the warm and friendly Jamaican people, the reggae music heard everywhere, or the totally laid-back way of life? For whatever reason I have been visiting Jamaica since 1980 when I stopped in Ocho Rios for a day on a cruise ship. In 1988 I went back to Jamaica with a group of friends (this time we went to Negril on the western tip of the island) for a week long bachelor party. This was during the time that I lived in PA before I moved to FL. After that first trip to Negril I was hooked and I returned every Winter for many years. Getting from Costa Rica to Jamaica proved …

Granada, Nicaragua 1 2 3

Last week I went to Granada Nicaragua for 5 days. I've been wanting to see Nicaragua ever since I moved here 3 years ago and I finally had the chance to go. I first flew to San Jose where I stayed for a couple nights and met up with a friend from the US. We then boarded a bus in San Jose (Tica Bus) for the 9 hour journey to Granada. Tica Bus is pretty nice with comfortable seats and a bathroom on board. They also showed movies (in English with Spanish subtitles) which really helped to pass the time. The drive is actually about 7 hours, but it's an additional two hour wait at the border to go through customs and immigration. First a few photos from San Jose. Th…

Lake Elsinore, California 1 2 3

Howdyall: Today I got in my car and roared like a bat outta hell down the 15 freeway to Lake Elsinore, and savored the Inland Empire of Southern California. Along the coast, it's "No Trespassing" etc., and frankly, no place to trespass to. Here, there's still wide open spaces, though they are disappearing. Here's an amazingly well-focused (for me, anyway) drive-by shot of a road cut with a nice bloom California Poppies -poppies poppies etc.

Last week one of my good friends from Tampa came for a visit. I picked him up in San Jose and we spent one night there and then got up the next morning and drove 4 hours over to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica to a small town called Puerto Viejo. This is one of the southernmost towns in Costa Rica and is not far from the Panamanian border. We arrived at our hotel (Banana Azul) and settled in. Here is a picture of our deck just outside of our room. Notice the palm tree cut-outs in the wood trim The view of the beach from our deck Flowering tree shading the entranceway to the hotel

Palms in Italy 1 2 3
by fiji jim- 93 replies

Last August we spent a few weeks in Italy and spent time in regions north of Rome through to Milan. We enjoyed fine food and wine and checked out the old historic places and some city sites. There were not many palms to be seen except for Med fans and some CIDP. I guess that more would have been seen in the south. The best display that we found was in the Florence Orto Botanico, Giardino Dei Botanico. They have a large glasshouse there where they store all the potted plants during the colder months. there were only a few palms in the ground in the garden, this one should be well known.

Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens 1 2 3

I spent a week in Florida in July. Vacation in Florida in July? The heat and humidity was nothing compared to what I experienced in Washington, DC years ago and I do live in the Caribbean. This was a family vacation, wife and kids in tow. Most of our time was spent shopping, a fact which Jeff Searle found incredible. No PRAs? Well, we did check out the palms at the Miami Zoo and had a quick look at the Searle Brothers Nursery before fire and brimestone, no thunder, lightning and torrential rain fell from the heavens. So a couple of days before it was time to leave Jeff offered to give up his Sunday rest and relaxation for a trip to Fairchild's Tropical Botanic Gard…

Hello everybody! I went to the Culiacan botanical garden in Sinaloa Mexico, the city is located 3.30 hours from where I live and it was quite a surprise to see this garden.. Big, clean, lots of palms (they presume to have the biggest palm collection in Mexico) and just beautiful! I have been in other mexicans botanical gardens and some of them looks abandoned and without maintenance, this was the oposite! Some of the palms didnt had name on it or probably old names, but anyway I will shopw some fotos and hope you enjoy them! Here is the entrance with big washis on the sides..

New Eco Reserve 1 2 3

Yesterday I was invited to visit and take a tour of a new Eco Reserve just outside of Quepos. A friend from our local palm society bought 700 acres of rainforest at the foothills of the mountains. There are trails along the river that lead to waterfalls and a trail that leads up to the top of the mountain. We walked the river trail yesterday which leads to a couple different waterfalls on the property. We stopped and had a picnic lunch, then took a swim in the river. Here we are after turning off the main road and heading inland towards the mountains. Dirt road through the African Oil Palm Plantations. Narrow bridge - our tires scraped along the si…

I just got back from a wonderful week in the Southeast, with many palm related visits and activities in Rio de Janeiro, Guaratiba (RJ State), Campinas, Nova Odessa and Limeira (São Paulo State). My wife also flew from Recife to meet me for the weekend and we got together with other 2 great friends and important palm collectors in Brazil: Liana Mendonça (from Sergipe) and Ricardo Péres (from Minas Gerais State). Last sunday we all went to the glorious Jardim Botânico, located in the heart of Rio, a place I hadn't been to for decades, still in magnificent shape, and coincidently celebrating its Bicentennial party today. The administration is also trying to renew and impro…
