Travels in Madagascar 1 2

Hello, I think I will use this thread every time I go somewhere in Madagascar and bring back pics and stories. Let me start with this one, a few weeks ago. I went with 2 other friends to the east coast, 150 km south of Toamasina, to Vatomandry, which means in malgache "lying down rocks" In fact if you "google-earth" it you will see the rocks in the sea. We went there to check out a piece of land of 110 ha which one of my friends inherited from his father. We wanted to find out if it could be used to plant palms for making "hearts of palms! With euterpe olearecea and another variety. They both grow back when cut! That last point is for those who will shout at me be…

Cruising & hiking the Caribbean for our anniversary 1 2
by PalmatierMeg- 42 replies
My husband Tim & I decided to celebrate our anniversary this year by taking our first Caribbean cruise. We chose a 5 night, 4 day trip on Royal Caribbean Grandeur of the Sea with stops at Key West, Cozumel and Coco Cay (a proprietary possession of Royal Caribbean cruise line artfully designed to separate passengers from their money). But, thanks to Hurricane Earl and some treacherous reefs, Coco Cay remained a speck on the horizon. So, while we made the first two stops, the ship spent the final 2 days cruising around the Caribbean dodging whitecaps. As a reprobate palmophile I wanted to see lots of palms - maybe collect some seeds from habitat, esp. on Cozumel. Tha…

Hello all I am heading back to Colombia and a friend has pulled out of the trip which is the bad news. The good news is that there is now room in the 4wd if anyone is interested. I will be setting off from Cali on the 20th July for 2 weeks travelling to Anchicaya valley and Putamayo region. I have a guide/driver arranged who I travelled with last year. He is farly knowledgible and risk averse and last year's trip was spectacular! I am happy to give more information if anyone is interested in an adventure in spectacular tropical forest. PM or email svill1@optusnet.com.au . Hoping to fill the car Steve

Richie Garden in Chillingham NSW 1 2

Today we visited another fabulous palm garden, in Chillingham, NSW, just over the QLD border. This is about a 45 minute drive from home, but the area is cooler and much wetter. This property was purchased 25 years ago and the garden created over this period, with a large dam being constructed, along with retaining walls and pathways. The property covers 80 acres, although most is in a natural forest setting. The main garden was converted from grassy ridgetop paddocks into a rainforest by planting native rainforest trees and lots of palms. It was a 5 minute drive along the driveway into the propert, and it was like going to the lost world. The weather here is very wet, and…

Three gardens were visited; Jesse Durko's home and nursery, Mike Harris' home and Jeff Searle's home. Over 40 people participated. I will post some pictures latter. Any other PalmTalk members have some pictures to add here? Denise and I were the lunch runners so I only have pictures of Jesse's garden. Thanks go out to the great hosts and hostess' as well as the donors to the auction, including John DeMott.

It's been a long time since I posted a photo thread, so let's see if I remember how this thing works. My twin brother Larry came out for the weekend. He was so sick of winter in Kansas City, he wanted me to drag him out to the desert and leave him on rock to warm up like a lizard. No problem. But first I wanted to get to the top of a mountain. Here is Larry and I near the trailhead with Stonewall Peak, our destination, 900 ft above us.

About 25 minutes drive from my place is this amazing nursery and bali statue importer. They have a wonderful gardens, some great palms and other plants for sale and the best garden statues I have ever seen, all brought back from Bali. The place is closing down very soon, the owners want to relax a bit more. Now If you are familiar with my own garden, as many of you are by now, you will recall I have two wonderful Latanias, red and yellow and two fantastic Foxy Lady palms, variegated and straight up green. I bought these beauties as younguns from this nursery, must be about 5 or 6 years ago now I suppose. I was there today, happen to have my camera on me so after askin…

Hi Folks Great day today at "Plantation 2000", Stan and Jane Walkely's horticultural business is filled with some of the most outstanding palm and cycad specimens you will ever see. This was the Brisbane palm and cycad society outing for October and it was terrific. Stan and Wes led us around the place for a mini tour. Thanks guys and I can see that one would need a great deal more time to check everything out. A special event for myself and a couple of others, I/we got to meet Bruce from California, known on this board as "cycadcentre". Great to see you Bruce and I'm sorry I disappointed by not wearing one of my trademark hawaiian shirts. Mike "newcal" also…

Mt Tamborine QLD 1 2

Hi Everyone, today our local palm society went on a trip to Mt Tamborine in southeast Queensland. This is a highland area about 20 minutes west of the Gold Coast and 1 hour south of Brisbane. There is lots of pristine rainforest, and 3 species of palms grow there. The climate is cooler than the lowlands, but they usually get good rainfall, and combined with red volcanic soil, it has ideal conditions for rainforest. Here's a few photos from today. I'll post more later... Hope you enjoy them. Daryl
