Two weeks ago there was a holiday here and i got two more days vacation. My family, my parents and all my sisters families, went to a warm water resort in Jurema , Central Paraná. The climate there is a lot warmer than here on the second tableland, because of the low altitude and it´s also located northern from here. The distance from Carambeí to Jurema is +- 300 km. I didn´t saw so many palms on the road,(mostly queens) but I photographed some of them. I saw Acrocomia totai,a Butiagrus,a Sabal species(?) and most interesting of all: Euterpe edulis growing in the warm region of Jurema but also a few trees in the araucaria forest ,in a region that officialy isn´t the …

Adelaide Botanical Gardens 1 2

I just got back from a couple of days working down in Adelaide, South Australia. Adelaide never gets much of a mention when it comes to palms in Australia. I too was curious, so decided to check out the local Botanical Gardens this morning before hitting the office. Adelaide is situated on the southern coastline of Oz, at about 35 degrees south, and has a Mediterranean type of climate with dry summers and moist, mild winters. They only very rarely get a light frost and the coastal plains there are quite mild compared to the hilly inland areas. I guess the climate is similar to parts of California, Europe and South Africa. The total rainfall for the year is about 540…

A few months ago I went back to La Paz Waterfall Gardens which is located near the Poas Volcano. This was my first trip back since the Biennial in 2008. Some info about the garden (off their website): Property size - 70 acres (28 hectares) Includes 1 kilometer of river frontage Altitude: 4,200 ft (1280 m) to 5,225 ft (1593 m) Rainfall: 14 to 15 ft per year (3500 to 3800 mm) Before arriving at the garden, we stopped at this coffee plantation and also this place selling strawberries. Strawberries (Fresas in Spanish) are grown everywhere at this elevation.

Photos from my trip 1 2

I have given up... I had every intention to resize the photos and post them one by one like I usually do, but I couldn't get the batch resizing to work properly. When I upload my pics into picasa, it actually rotate my images automatically, so I had all different sizes photos... I can't be bothered tinkering with it... so I just have to post a link to my picasa (sorry Dean... you know I have tried). This first lots of photos is from the Singapore botanical garden. We only had 1.5 hours to spare so we probably didn't see everything. When you had your best friend looking after your 7 and 4 years old, you didn't have the luxury of spending a whole day there... which is e…

A DAY ON THE ROAD 1 2
by amazondk- 44 replies

I have posted quite a few pictures previously of the area between Manaus and Boa Vista, Roraima. I hope some more will be enjoyed. While driving north last Friday to Boa Vista with a stop in Rorainopolis, 475 kms north of Manaus, I got inspired while thinking about Gileno's road trip, shots of Fiji by Jim, and Dave's Southern California street drive by shots. So I took a few pictures of the days trip. I left Manaus around 9 AM. I did not start taking pictures until somewhat north of Manaus, but I guess that is ok. The road, BR 174 which goes to Caracas is a real mess. It takes about 6 hours to travel the 475 kms to Rorainopolis. I never get tired of looking at the…

His most famous 2 books that he wrote were on Crotons. (Codiaeum variegatum) His first book on this colorful group of plants is named; Florida's Beautiful Crotons. It was published in 1960 and is now a hard to find collectors book. His second book was then written in the mid 90's sometime. This is the entrance to his nursery.

During my second trip to Madagascar, we were very fortunate to come across the true D. ambositrae in the wild. With all the discussion about this obscure species I decided to bring to light what we found earlier this year. The following photos of the small plant were taken in the capital, Tana, in the botanical garden. Jeff

Howdyall: Here's a thread about the sights at the Edison Estate in Fort Myers. I shot through there on my way down to Naples. It was a cloudy day when I started, gonna try to keep things in more or less chron-order. Some of these pics had to be cropped rather severely, but I thought all were worthwhile. Away we go . . . . This is the Florida Champion Banyan tree. Hmm. Wonder what it has for breakfast? ??? And how much and for how long?

Jardin Botanico de la Universidad de Puerto Rico 1 2

Due to some unfortunate circumstances while ported in Puerto Rico, I gained a bonus week's stay permiting a Botanical Garden visit!! My certainty for many palm ID's is low, but hopefully you true palm/plant people can chime in!! JBUPR is not a Fairchild, yet its beauty is great! It is gigantic, but lacks the detail certain smaller Botanical Gardens possess. Due to their somewhat limited collection, I may have actually been able to capture every palm species in the park!! (although some were hard to photograph). It rained every single hour it seemed while I was in northern Puerto Rico, but miraculously the clouds parted during my visit to this garden. This palm needs no…

Jen and I took another trip to the Wild Animal Park this summer. I got some different pics this time I'd like to share. Hope you enjoy. Acacia xanthophloea near the shops. Dang! I've got two of these growing on my ridge. I hope they get huge like this someday. Cute! And the tree's not half bad either. Is that an Un-official Palmtalk Ranch Hand T-shirt I spy? Lookout point! We began with the Limbocker Garden at 9am. This garden is unique, in that it was started just 3 years ago with mostly liners. The size of the palms can only be explained by some extraordinary soil ammendment and irrigation engineering. Here's John greeting people as they were arriving.

We're taking a trip to the middle east in October this year to see some friends: specifically, we're going to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Muscat, and Cairo as far south as Dashur and maybe even the Faiyum. Anyone have any palm must-see's along this route? Steve

Back from Oz....and the dead 1 2

What a long month and a half it's been. Colin, I apologize for not contacting you in Oz. Shortly after tying the knot on October 28th, I got a very, very bad cold/fever. I somehow managed to pull through while on my trip down under but not without every cold remedy imaginable. When I got back to the states, I developed a horrible cough which turned out to be bronchitis. I spent two days in a local hospital with an incessant cough. It's only in the last couple of weeks that I managed to recover and get my strength back. I did my best not to let it ruin the trip but didn't want to spread my germs. Anyway, here are some photos: Calamus in the rainforest

Goodbye Melbourne - Hello Cairns 1 2

Hi all, Firstly, Happy New Year to everyone out there. I hope 2013 is safe, happy and successful for you. Tomorrow marks a new beginning for me. After living in Melbourne, Victoria for 22 years, I am relocating to Cairns, Queensland. I will be starting the big drive tomorrow. Approx 3400km (2100 miles) directly north. From 38 Deg South, up to 16 Deg South. I will spread the drive out over 5 days, including one rest day on the Sunshine Coast in the middle of the trip. Whilst I am obviously excited about being able to move to the tropics, and grow some stunning palms, there is also a hint of sadness at what I am leaving behind. Needless to say, the car is …
