join mattyb & paul(pohonkelapa) on their latest adventure as they discover the vast richness of southern florida, from verdant farmlands to the miami beach strip, from palm collectors dream-nurseries to spectacular private gardens! matt gets snarly before intra-continental flights. while paul is contemplative. or just not awake yet. just to prove we were in atlanta.there we met an airport employee who "out-jeebused" matt. he was appropriately chastened.

one day i was talking to jeff in CR on palm talk & said how much i'd like to see costa rica & he said: "you & jes are welcome to come stay with me" so much to his surprise i said "OK" & the rest is as follows... we departed from LAX,the flight was a true "red-eye" & left at 1:30 am. the coast of socal just after take-off. thanks to the wonders of modern pharmacology i dont remember anything between when the previous pic was taken & this one the next morning. we sat next to "rasta man"(whose hat you see next to jes). he ate a bucket of chicken in the first 20 minutes of the flight.

Steph and I just got back from another working vacation at our place on the big island of Hawaii and while I did plant some palms and stuff a lot of our focus was carving trails and taking out invasive plants in the back half of our acre. I was able to hack out a nice trail to the back of our property and clear out some other areas for planting. Bo again hooked me up with some VERY NICE plants and here is the list of the palms and others I was able to plant when I was'nt swinging the machete. Dypsis Decipiens 5 gal. Dypsis Oropedionis 5 gal. Dypsis Rivularis "pink crown" 1 gal. Dypsis Onilahensis 1 gal. Dypsis "clumping mystery" 1 gal. Marojejya Darianii 5 gal. 2- …

This thread goes out specifically for my friend_Clayton & other nursery owners around the Globe ! Today the nursery we are going to visit is_G.K Nursery. and their e.mail address is gknursery@hotmail.com Telephone_65320500 Add the internation area code to it. this nursery is one amoung the premium nurseries that i visit often to buy my palm requirements & also to fresh air, since its located very close to the sea.just few steps away. And the owner is very sweet & very flexiable to coustomers.. and i happen to visit this place quite often and have some informal plant discussions. So folks get ready to take off_

In April 2005,Dr. Peter Balasky of South Florida, Bill Beattie of Australia and myself teamed up for a month long trip to Madagascar. This trip took us from the Marojejy Mountains in the Northeast down to the Masoala Peninsula and over to Ile Sainte Marie off the coast. During our trip, we saw over 50 palm species in habitat. Populations of certain species were seen for the first time. I will be posting several of the photos taken during our trip. The first one here is an awe-inspiring view of the Marojejy Mtns.

The Gardens at its present site was founded in 1859 by an Agri-Horticultural Society. Planned as a leisure garden and ornamental park, the Society organised flower shows and horticultural fetes. In 1874, the Society handed over management and maintenance of the site to the government. The scientific mission of the Gardens evolved when the colonial government assumed management and deployed Kew-trained botanists and horticulturists to administer the Gardens. In 1988 Dr Tan Wee Kiat became Director of the Gardens. While the Gardens remained committed to its role in making Singapore a Garden City and meeting recreational needs, renewed focus on being a leading internationa…

Last year, I once again made plans to fly back to Madagascar for another exciting look at some of the most beautiful and sought after palms in the world. When I arrived after a long 20+ hour flight into Antananarivo, the capital, Dr. Peter Balasky from here in South Florida and Bill Beattie of Australia were already there to join up for some exciting palm hunting. Prior to arriving, Pete was already in the country and down in the southern part near Ranomafana with his good friend, Pierrot. There, they were helping in the rebuilding of a schoolhouse and donating many supplies that he had brought over with him. The next day, Bill and I decided we would take a short taxi …

Well we just got back from another vacation to the big island and it never stops amazing me how much there is to do and see there. We brought the kids this time so while we were able to plant some palms and work on the house we also took alot of adventures and hikes and saw many new things and parts of the island that we had not seen before. I was very happy to see that every single palm that I had planted last time we were out there had not only survived but were thriving and had put on significant growth. Anyhows everyone had an awesome time and we can't wait to go back. I met Jerry and Cindy Andersen at there Leilani property and nursery and they hooked me up big time …

i was invited by my friend tracy to go on an 8-day cruise to mexico with her family for her husband mark's 50th birthday(tracy is the mother of lauren, who accompanied me to bali last year).i have never been on a cruise before so i thought "what the heck, sounds fun."i had no idea what to expect. part I: "the embarkationing." tracy & mark.they kinda remind me of lucy & ricky from "i love lucy," the stereotypes are ALL there. hey look, theres me! i saw "the poseidon adventure" 27 times when i was a kid so i was a little nervous.if i'd seen ernest borgnine i woulda jumped off the ramp.
