Senoran Desert National Monument worth a visit?
by Palmensammler- 2 replies
Hi, My wife and I will be in southern Arizona and New Mexico in autumn. We're starting in Phoenix and will drive south. Is the Senoran Desert National Monument worth to make a detour or is it better to visit only the Saguaro National Park? From what I have seen on Maps there's more or less only the Phoenix Bypass road where you can drive with the RV. Can someone confirm this or tell me if it's worth a drive by visit? Thanks Eckhard

Much of my vacation was spent admiring some of the most beautiful palms I've ever seen.... only the real ones. My favorite is of course the canary island palms. There were some pretty awesome sagos too.

I had the honor and pleasure to spend the afternoon with Mr. Bob Burtchers today. Bob is going through some health challenges at the moment, but was gracious to invite me over for a tour. I already knew that I was going to be in for a treat by looking at all the existing pics of Bob's garden here on PalmTalk. But talking with him...the discussion about design elements of his yard and how he envisions things...what a gift he gave me to impart his thoughts and ideas about palms and different plants in general. I have a ton of pics on my DSLR to post, but was so excited, I had to get this post up.

Today I have some pics of traveling to Prachinburi Thailand, the last Habitat of Corypha lecomtei. Among group of Corypha, C.lecomtei is the most attractive in genus with very long light green black stripped and upright forming petiole. As same as others Corypha, C.lecomtei end their own life after extremely flowering. This way could make them endanger in few century, cause one thing C.lecomtei difference from others, it rarely to see and can be found only in the last habitat here in Prachineburi. Prachinburi is 4hrs east from Bangkok, here is the map we was going to. Let's tour!!!

Hi guys! It's been many years since I last posted on this forum. Sorry! Just thought I'd mention my upcoming Taiwan expedition (Fri 26 Apr - Wed 08 May 2019) (13 days) https://www.nature-expeditions.co.uk/tours/taiwan-birds-botany-expedition.php I know it says "Birds & Botany" and we will be going to good birding places and seeing birds, but everyone who has already signed up so far are coming for the botany, so the whole expedition will be focused on the botany. I still have a couple of places left so if any of you are interested in joining me you'd be most welcome. I've been visiting Taiwan for about 24 years, I know the islands exceptionall…

I recently went to this state park and wanted to share some of the sights here. It was an enjoyable day trip, didn't cost much, and mixed just enough native, untouched Florida with some nice landscaping. If you would like to visit yourself, you can get more information here: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/ravine-gardens-state-park The courtyard at the entrance: Rock garden at the Civic Center: Bismarckia and large podocarpus: Pavilion: Sagos near the Civic Center:

FIRST VISIT TO THE BIG ISLAND
by Phoenix Bob- 3 replies
- 1.2k views
Finally going to visit the Big Island next month. Have been on Maui on at least 20 separate occasions, so thought it's about time to take a look at Maui's big neighbor to the south. Will be staying on the Kona coast, but have no problem traveling to other island locations in search of botanical gardens (and especially palm displays) that local residents think are worthwhile. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Learning of other sites (not necessarily palm-related) that are worth visiting would certainly be appreciated, Thanks! Phoenix Bob

Here are pic's of the trees and seeds I collected. I am thinking either phoenix dactylifera or phoenix canariensis. The seeds do not look like pictures of either of the pic's of these seeds on the web. Anyone know what I have here? Maybe the seeds I am seeing on the web have already dried out? These were collected from the dates which looked like gigantic red grapes. Thanks, Burl

I got these seeds from a palm here in Mansfield, TX. The fruit is 11mm and the seeds are 7-7.5mm. Is this Sabal Minor? It's in Front of Threads Dry Cleaners on Broad if you live in the area. They have a dozen or so of these trees.

NC Botanical Gardens

Yesterday I went to the North Carolina Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill. Zone 7b Sabal minor in the Coastal Plain exhibits Trachycarpus fortunei and Rhapidophyllum hystrix tiny Serenoa repens. These palms are hardy enough to live in the Triangle but don't like the soil. They are better reserved to the Coastal Plain where the soil is sandy.

Any idea what kind of palm here? It looks similar to a Washingtonia to my amateur eyes but there are no teeth on the petiole. Picked up a few seeds to try to germinate. They have a bunch of them at Joe T. Garcia's restaurant in Ft Worth, TX.
