OK, it's hardly an exotic location, but I thought it would be worth posting a few pics of my October visit. This is an outside view of the larger greenhouse (biome), which is themed as "humid tropics" This is the slightly smaller biome, which is host to "warm temperate" species. A waterfall inside the humid tropics biome, which is a major source of humidity for the biome.

I am planning another trip to one of our nature reserves where there are quite a few stands of M. flexuosa. This triggered my mind regarding an article I wrote some time ago. Here is a link for those who have not read it before. I hope to have some updated photos in a couple of weeks. Collecting M. flexuosa seeds Robert

Cocos at Sea World Orlando
by SoLando- 9 replies

When I arrived at SeaWorld today, I was pleasently surprised with some fat@$$ foxtails when you pay for parking. I couldn't get a good picture (all blurry) since I had to keep moving. But, they were some FAT dudes. Looked great. SeaWorld's coconuts look amazing. There were some really tall ones. And, it seemed like there was a cocos on every corner! I was in heaven. I'm sorry for the terrible quality, I took these pictures from my cellphone. It only let me take a picture of a few (it was not being cooperative!) and for the others it said "photo failed" or something like that. I was TICKED. I tried to get a pic of a REALLY tall coconut, but my phone did not work with m…

Royal Palm Ranch
by amazondk- 5 replies
I drive by this ranch all the time as I go over to work on our business in Itacoatiara, 260 kms from Manaus. This time I decided to stop and take a picture. I think it has a great setting surrounded by forest, babaçu palms (Attaleas) with some nice royal palms in the yard. The road is on a high crest at this point and looks down at the place. You can also notice our winter weather pattern sky. It seems the rainy season has started. We get a few days like this and then 3 or 4 sunny ones. It is nice to see the temperature go down a bit. dk

Some more road side shots
by amazondk- 15 replies
- 1.4k views
Since I have received a lot of positive input on some of my roadside shots I have a few more. And, I would like to thank Gileno for his documentation of his trip. I find it a good way to make the trip more interesting looking for palm and related shots. This trip we took up to Boa Vista, Roraima leaving early Monday morning and returning on Saturday this week. The trip to Boa Vista is on BR 174 and is about 800 kms. If the road were in good shape it would be an easy trip. Unortunately like many Brazilian highways the highway is a mess. The holes sometimes look like they will swallow your car. This highway was only paved 6 years ago and is already in a sad state of …

by Walter John- 18 replies

This day is in fact in 3 stages, three garden visits. the first being Palm fascinations in nambour, see that thread, the second visit was at a members dry garden in caboolture featuring fantastic succulents, agaves, cycads etc. The third visit was to a members residence in a suburban garden in Brisbane itself. An amazing garden for an inner city suburb. Here's some of the photos I took. Sorry, I'm having problems with Photobucket, I'll get back soon.

Coconuts in Rio Formoso
by Gileno Machado- 32 replies

We had some friends from England visiting our home in Sirinhaém last saturday and we decided to rent a small motorboat to show them around the river mangroves and coconuts near the mouth. This friend is a retired journalist of BBC and his wife is a children books writer and publisher in UK. They are now seriously planning to buy a summer house in my neighborhood to spend a few months each year among our coconuts...let's see...

Country road palms

I had a short business trip yesterday to Escada and Primavera, two small towns ~80 Km southwest of Recife. On my way back I decided to go to the beach in Sirinhaém to check my palms. I took a few pictures of wild grown and cultivated palms, mostly amidst the oceanic sugarcane plantations and small Atlantic forest preserves near the local roads, driving through typical "Zona da Mata" environment:

Hawaii Island Palm Society had a garden tour today at UHH (University of Hawaii Hilo). Dr. Don Hemmes, who retired earlier this year after 34 years at UHH, was our guide, and when it comes to cycad and palm expertise Don is a real pro. Don has been the driving force at UHH, planting all sorts of exotic cycads and palms, and today's garden tour included both. At first I was thinking of putting the cycad photos in the "Non palm section" of the Forum, but at second thought that seemed silly. This was an "integrated" tour that included both, so I'm going to sneak in some cycad photos here. We started out in the cycad garden, but Don had planted a bunch of Syagrus amara for …
