New toy + weather data project
by ColdBonsai- 3 replies

Howdy all. Just thought I'd show something I started working on. I recently added an Ambient Weather station to the yard and have done a little Python programming for the data it provides. I'm sure I could have used another app to get the same information or even just made macros in excel, but where's the fun in that? The goal is to have my own master data file that I can add to and reference for years to come. To make using it easier I wanted a script that formats and pulls out all the data nuggets for me, so I really just have to download a cvs file and let the computer magic do its thing. So here's what I got so far: - One master data file th…

Crazy Santa Ana Winds in Otay Mesa, CA

I took these pics at the stoplight in front of my office while going for a bite to eat. I have never seen Washies' fronds with their leaf bases (even old ones) detach from their trunk due to winds. The gusts here are extraordinarily strong.

Drought Broken, Darwin

The 1st of October is the official start of the Wet Season in the Top End of the Northern Territory. And as if it was scripted, we had a beautiful little downpour about 9.00am this morning. This was the first rain in the Leanyer ( my suburb ) gauge since 28th April, ie; 5 full calendar months without rain. Without checking official records it would be right up there with the longest droughts recorded. We have an extreme Wet/Dry monsoonal climate that is hard on man, beast and palms. Last 'wet' I recorded 100" until the end of April and not a drop since until this mornings welcome rain. I shudder to think what my next water bill is gunna read.....I have been pouring it on t…

" ON SUNDAY...THE TAIL END OF A PACIFIC WEATHER SYSTEM NOW LOOKS AS IF IT`LL STILL BE JUST STRONG ENOUGH TO BRING A CHANCE OF SOME RAIN TO ABOUT THE NORTHERN THIRD OF THE DISTRICT. THEN IN THE MONDAY TO MONDAY NIGHT TIME FRAME...A MUCH STRONGER STORM SYSTEM IS PROJECTED TO SPREAD WIND AND RAIN ACROSS THE DISTRICT WITH COOL AND UNSETTLED WEATHER CONTINUING ON TUESDAY...AND SNOW LEVELS POTENTIALLY LOWERING DOWN TO THE 2500-3000 FT RANGE. ALSO...GIVEN THE MODEL PROJECTED STRENGTH OF THIS SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED COLD AIR ALOFT...ALONG WITH LATE MARCH DIURNAL HEATING...WILL NEED TO CAREFULLY CONSIDER POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY AS WE GET CLO…

Thermometers in California
by Tracy- 0 replies

I was planning on buying a couple of outdoor thermometers so I could track the highs and lows in different parts of my garden instead of just one spot with my old standard mercury thermometer. I wanted to purchase a traditional mercury thermometer with max and min readings recorded. When I began searching I found that California banned mercury tube thermometers, something I vaguely remember reading in the press. While they are still available online in other states, it seems they can't be shipped legally into California. I tried a digital which I used for a while, but the display didn't last long (acquired a big box). I called what I thought would be a good source i…

Crazy microclimate in East Austin (not the good kind)
by DreaminAboutPalms- 3 replies
This morning when I woke up at 5AM it was 41 degrees in North Austin where I live near the domain, I drive out to Manor 15 miles or so east off 290 to golf and it is 34 degrees at the manor weather station and 32 right outside the clubhouse. I begin talking with this other member who lives on the course in the shadowglen neighborhood off hole #11, and he has the app on his phone connected to a temperature gauge in his backyard. He began explaining to me how the area around his house is significantly colder than the temperature at the clubhouse, and he showed me this mornings temperature reading of 25.6 at 6:37AM, and showed me weather data for the whole month reveali…

A rainy day in Daytona Beach- video
by Bill H2DB- 0 replies
There's several more days of rain expected . I've had about 5.6" here since last Friday , including one burst of 3.2" in a little over one hour . That caused some localized flooding here in Holly Hill . During that one , some water got into the garage , which unfortunately sits below the elevation of the house and driveway . You may need to right click the video , to make it run . Rainy day in Holly Hill... by Bill H, on Flickr

Best Frost Cloth

Does anyone here have any good recommendations on frost cloth? I bought one to cover a small, tender cactus in the yard and it literally frosted both on top of and under the cloth during a radiative frost. Clearly a crappy product.

cold wave science
by flplantguy- 6 replies

Ever since the freeze at christmas i have been wondering about cold waves and penninsular florida, specifically the science behind the power of a cold wave like 1989 vs 2022. The media called 2022 the coldest since 1989, even equated the two (and up north where i grew up this one was colder), but in florida at least they were very different. Was the difference meerely chance, was the media being excessive in their description, or was that freeze the new normal for us in florida, specifically central and south where the water has more impact? Im in Hudson about 2 miles inland, but far enough north that its not in the city really, so any change to my advantage would be gr…
