I wouldn't normally post anything on weather conditions like La Nina and El Nino since I just know the very basics of it, but the picture that the AP has included in this article should make you chuckle a bit. https://www.yahoo.com/news/weather-forecast-la-nina-may-last-winter-164559134.html

Oregon Wildfires

We already have a number of fires burning in the state well ahead of schedule. The ice storm we had destroyed and damaged many trees, and then dry hot spring made things worse by drying out damaged wood and killing trees. All around here people are trying to clear out the dead brush, but the tree companies have been working overtime since mid February. I had a fire a few miles from my house the other day in Oregon City, but fortunately they were able to put that one out even though it was on a steep hillside. The most infamous fire, but not the only large one currently burning is the Bootleg fire. Still growing and causing major issues. It has gotten so big it…

Orange, CA climate

I was looking at weather underground here in the state of California and noticed something odd happening down in Villa Park currently at 11:15PM. Some areas are 78F and within walkable distance it's 18-20 degrees cooler. Obviously some compression heating up the air, but it's it combining with marine air and thus the temp drop?

Good bye Summer

Well, looks like the weather averages are finally catching up with us here in Central California and we have to kiss the beach weather good bye. It's hard to go from 80's back to 50's for highs. Even worse, it's hard to see our overnight lows become our daily highs. I won't complain given what our friends in the Southeast have had to endure, this post is just my way to part with the amazing weather we've been having. But I will complain about the crappy cold, though, because the cold means we don't get any rain or very little which is of no use. We need a pattern coming from the West, not the North in order to replenish the reservoirs here. And the current Northerly p…

This has been one of the best summers for late autumn ripening that I can remember - lotsa sun and warmth = excellent ripening and build up of natural plant "anti-freeze" for winter to come. Hope this proves true for others in UK and indeed everyone in this hemisphere. Regardez Juan

Righti-o....lets have a bit of a look at the big La Nina of 2010-2011. and how it impacted on Katherine and Darwin rainfall wise..... Tindal - Average yearly-1074.1mm. Median-1085.6mm 2009 - 622.6mm 2010 - 1120.6mm 2011 - 1162.4mm 2012 - 691.6mm Darwin - Average yearly-1722.8mm. Median-1723.7mm 2009 - 1742.4mm 2010 - 2257.2mm 2011 - 2686.0mm 2012 - 1723.7mm. Hasn't been moved. It's an experiment. The palm is in a 15 gallon pot, south facing, no supplemental/artificial heat except the south facing wall behind it. I've had it for two years now. This is its second winter:

The Arctic blast blew in here just a little while ago with minor rains in the front of it. Local forcasters say: 23, 18, 18, 26 Weather channal says: 24, 23, 23, 23 I protected nothing, as is my motto. And we have already hit two nights with lows of 26 with heavy frost. A whole lof of palms and other tropicals are gonna get a real test. And I'll be documenting them all.

Higher Soil Temps With This Weather
by Jim in Los Altos- 3 replies

I periodically check my soil temperatures in various parts of my landscape and from an average low of 50F at the end of November after a cold spell, my soil temps. today ranged from 57.5F to 60F. I was noticing spears opening rapidly on a few of my Archontophonix and I even measured more than 1/4" growth on the new spear of my Roystonea in the last two days. That's definitely not typical of the end of December when most growth is at a standstill. It looks like this wet, mild weather pattern will last for several more days and possibly longer. My garden seems to like it.

Laguna's Beach Washed Away?

Well, things got a bit ugly in one of the prettiest towns here in the Southland. CLICK HERE FOR FULL REPORT LOS ANGELES — Areas just south of Los Angeles — including a tony beach town that saw "rivers coming through" and its main beach washed away — were hardest hit Wednesday by the fiercest of several storms that battered Southern California since Friday. Dozens of homes were hit by mud, at least two people were killed in storm-related car accidents, more evacuations were ordered Wednesday morning, and one rescue involved a man who called from his cell phone as his vehicle filled up with water. Laguna Beach, where homes top $1 million, saw extensive damage a…

After a very warm December 2013 in Florida but a cooler than normal California, the roles flip/flopped this January. Air temperatures are one aspect. Ocean/Water temperatures are another issue. Here are some examples for Jan. 26, 2014: 1 Cape Canaveral, Fl.-65F. 2 Ft. Myers, Fl.-62F. 3 Pensacola, Fl.-52F. 4 Mobile, Ala.- 48F. 5 Grand Island, La.-52F. 6 Galveston, Tx.-50F. 7 Port Aransas, Tx.-53F. 8 Camp Pendleton, Ca.-60F. 9 Santa Monica, Ca.-60F. 10 Fernandina Beach, Fl,-50F. 11 Palm Beach Inlet, Fl.-75F. 12 Key West, Fl.-68F. Interesting to note that the Ocean at the Palm Beach Inlet is a full seven degrees warmer than Key West, which is over one hundred and fifty miles…

SE Pre Winter Forecast.

I tend to keep on eye on what Joe Bastardi says when it comes to patterns. He has pretty organic forecasting in this regard IMO. He's calling for a pretty cold and wet(snowy ) winter for the those of us in the SE. If you planted some marginal stuff this year thinking it's gotta be better then last year's brutal winter might get ready to do some winter protection: These are all from Joe Bastardi's Twitter Page
