Is it me or are we already way cooler than we should be for early November. I’ve been in the low 40s for lows for over a week now. It’s having a hard time hitting 70 during the day. Hope we don’t have a bad winter.

Reminds me far too much of the track of Andrew. But at least this one doesn't have a head of steam going before first strike.

New coconut with root rap
by Yunder Wækraus- 0 replies

A month ago I purchased a young coconut that had been grown in a grocery bag. It had terrible root wrap, and I had to sever its thicker roots, which had fused with the bag. It looked yellow and sick, but it’s putting out a new frond now. Do you think it’s going to grow out of the root-wrap stage? (I’m also including pics of my other palms, which came with the house.)

Flirting with the Monsoon ..and some thoughts on summer 2018

On another hot Saturday evening, it is interesting to think that at the same time just last week, it was cloudy, humid and only 78F, compared to 95F out atm. That coming after a very good ( and unexpected) downpour earlier in the day, thanks in part to the squeeze play between the remnants of former Hurricane Bud, and an approaching upper level low moving N.E. from northern Baja. While most of the valley ( inc. Phoenix proper ) completely missed out, and thus continue the streak of rainless days since March ( 102+ and counting) we received a healthy .50-.75" which, in other places, might not seem like much.. but is practically un-heard of here, esp. in June. Rain duri…

Rained all night. Raining this morning with no signs of letting up. We have already received at least three inches. Maybe we will get five when all is said and done. Has not come down like this in a while. Times like this that remind you why your cycads should be mounded.

August 1, 2021 and National Hurricane Center predicts no new tropical cyclone development for next five (5) days. Why is this important? Cape Verde Season for So Fl is August 15 to September 15. Cape Verde Season is the time that the nuclear warheads are launched from the arc of the Sahara towards So Fla (see Andrew). Time is short! Why no action in the Carribean? SAL (Saharan Air Layer) is blanketing the all important runway from West Africa through the Carribean to So Fl. How long will the SAL blanket remain to protect So Fl and the US from the Cat five (5) carnivores that attack and extract like wild hyenas? No one knows. The tropics can turn on a dime a…

2018-2019 Winter/US/Dec., Jan.,Feb.
by bubba- 2 replies

The 2018–2019 United States winter in the Palm growing areas of the country did not experience the Polar Vortex in the predicted manner. To the contrary, the Polar Vortex created a much colder than anticipated winter in the western US when conventional wisdom predicted a possible replay of 1899 that would torture the SE (see Joe Bastardi). LA reported a cool/cold winter season. December had a maximum of 77F, a minimum of 39F and a median of 59F. January had maximum of 78F, minimum of 38F and a median of 59F. Startling for LA was February, which reported a maximum of 69F, a minimum of 40F and a median of 53F. Snowfall was widely reported throughout LA. Continuing in C…

Hello all, I'm new around here and I started this topic because I have some little palm trees indoor and the look like they are either ill of affected by the weather conditions. I've got this little ones from a botanic garden in which of course weather conditions were optimal. In my apartment there is not the level of humidity required, I know that..but since I moved to Germany I managed to grow different types of plants originally from worm and wet weather. It is not the case with this palms, I do not have the name, but I'll get it soon. I have them under white light (9hs), we haven't seen the sun for weeks. I recently put some small containers with water arou…

痛い痛い痛い!!! Typhoon-Zilla to hit Japan.

This looks scary, hope it's a false alarm. http://local.msn.com/neoguri-to-become-a-super-typhoon-target-japan-1 "Rapidly intensifying Typhoon Neoguri is on track to become the first super typhoon of 2014 and threaten lives and property in Japan." "Strengthening will continue through Monday as the typhoon progresses through an area of very warm water and low wind shear (strong winds above the surface that can shred tropical systems apart)." The Herald says he quit or was ousted. Not merely "temporarily reassigned." This possibly brings an end to calls for his ouster by some 20 of the 50 staff. What an unusual in-the-office storm for a fairly staid agency!

Summer in California
by PalmGuyWC- 2 replies

Finally, I think it's safe to say Summer has arrived in Calif after a very cool spring. For the past week my night time lows have been in the low 60's with day time highs near 100, give or take a few degrees. I use other plants to gage growth besides palms, and my languishing tomato plants have finally exploded with growth. I can't wait for some of those juicy home grown tomatoes soon. Dick
