La Nina Autumn 2020
by Tracy- 1 reply

La Nina patterns or cooler equatorial sea surface temps from the Central Pacific through to the Easter Tropical Pacific are occurring right now. These patterns often lead to dry and clear Autumn and Winter weather patterns here in Southern California where I live. The west coast just experienced a typical La Nina weather pattern last weekend with an inside slider storm coming down the coast with strong winds and leaving us now with cool dry nights and no marine layer. I hope that this isn't a sign of what is to come as we get deeper into Autumn and enter Winter. With clear skies, I bottomed out at 39 degrees last night, and even the weather station at Moonlight Beach …

Winter Storms Kai and Lucius

Man oh man! Did we have some heavy rain here in the last couple of days. I don't remember the last time we had strong storms like these - it must be several years since a similar storm hit us. Usually after a big storm, I wake up to see snow covering the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This morning, both the coastal range and the Sierra were coated in white! What a sight! Snow to the east and snow to the west. Rarely is a storm cold enough to bring snow to lower elevation ranges like the coastal range in central CA. How did youguys in the coastal ranges fare? Reports say CA-17 was closed in the Santa Cruz Mountains waiting for snow clearing equipment! https://www.wa…

Flirting with the Monsoon ..and some thoughts on summer 2018
by Silas_Sancona- 1 reply

On another hot Saturday evening, it is interesting to think that at the same time just last week, it was cloudy, humid and only 78F, compared to 95F out atm. That coming after a very good ( and unexpected) downpour earlier in the day, thanks in part to the squeeze play between the remnants of former Hurricane Bud, and an approaching upper level low moving N.E. from northern Baja. While most of the valley ( inc. Phoenix proper ) completely missed out, and thus continue the streak of rainless days since March ( 102+ and counting) we received a healthy .50-.75" which, in other places, might not seem like much.. but is practically un-heard of here, esp. in June. Rain duri…

What a strange sensation
by Xerarch- 6 replies

I just went outside briefly in my short sleeves to grab something out of my vehicle. Upon walking out the door I thought "wow it's so warm out here, this feels nice". "Nice" is a very, very, relative term here, we've been below 0 F a lot here lately, with a couple mornings recently around -15 F (~ -26 C). So any guesses as to what the "warm" temp was tonight?...................27 F! (-2.8 C), oh what a difference a change in perspective can make.

As Yesterday was the 120th anniversary of the 1899 arctic outbreak I thought I would link to this 1988 abstract detailing the event. It also touches on the arctic outbreaks of Jan 1982 and Jan 1985 at the end of the paper. Obviously it was written a year to early to include the outbreak of 1989 that I remember witnessing the aftermath of that February while visiting the Stuart area during my winter break in high school. MORE COLD

A new storm system from The Pacific is due in Tuesday, and as it wraps itself up the east coast, MORE ARCTIC AIR will come down. I would not be surprised to see freeze warnings posted again throughout ALL of Florida except the coasts. Right now I am so discouraged - not from the damage - but from the inability to get outside and work in the yard. The longer it takes me to begin cleaning and fixing, the more there is to do. I even had slight damage from Thurs morning in the far back of my open back yard. I just wanna be like a bear and hibernate UNTIL something "normal" returns :-)).........Greg

New coconut with root rap
by Yunder Wækraus- 0 replies

A month ago I purchased a young coconut that had been grown in a grocery bag. It had terrible root wrap, and I had to sever its thicker roots, which had fused with the bag. It looked yellow and sick, but it’s putting out a new frond now. Do you think it’s going to grow out of the root-wrap stage? (I’m also including pics of my other palms, which came with the house.)

Another Job!

Well finally this is starting to pick up. I've been working with the Palm Springs Tramway since April, providing forecasts for them. I just recently picked up another client and to my surprise who it was when they called. (BP) British Petroleum wants me to be on their meteorologist staff for six cities in this region and make "custom weather watches" like I do with SCWXA.org. They are a major company so this is a big thing for my work. Very happy. Also, the bay area thunderstorms were predictable. Upper level low and enough mid/upper level moisture would set those off in what we mets call "elevated instability", similar to what we experienced in Southern Cali…

I planted one in 94 and its nearly 7' tall. Roughly when will it flower? I appreciate that will depend on many factors. It is in a warm, sunny position. I have certainly seen a few in flower at 10' and once in Spain at only 8' or so. Any opinions or is that an impsosible question? Many thanks for your help guys. Regardez Juan

So, So-Callians how much are you getting? I'm in the Dark Tower and it's coming down hard, since early morning. Forecasters call it light rain. Bring on the heavy. (Hope it's over for the PSSC meeting. Rain or no rain, I'm going!)

1780 Barbados Hurricane/Earthquake ?
by bubba- 2 replies
The October 1780 Barbados Hurricane was one of the most vicious ever recorded. Wind speeds were calculated at over 200 MPH and the entire island was defoliated. The bulk of the British Fleet was stationed in the Barbados and was destroyed but this Hurricane went on to destroy a large part of the British Fleet in other places in the Carribean ( Cuba, Martinique,Saint Lucia...). It was almost like a heat seeking missile. This Hurricane almost in one swoop ended British Naval dominance over the Atlantic. In the Barbados during the worst of this Hurricane, there were reports of an earthquake. This claim seemed to be simply too outlandish. However, new scientific res…

New Record Set

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain! This is the first July 18th in history that measureable rain has fallen in the Bay Area. Only a few hundreths of an inch but enough to clean and brighten my taller palms. Rain ended by late afternoon and skies are, again, clear, cloudless ones that we typically experience in July and most of the summer here.

Weather stations?

Somehow I got stuck looking www.ambientweather.com all day long.... Maybe all this freezing weather everyone is having has something to do with this... So I was curious, do any of ya'll use these systems to monitor the conditions of your immediate conditions in your locales... I would think this would be very pertinent data for our discussions... If so, which systems do you uses and what do you like/dislike about them? I think it would be cool to have all this data compiled on a computer and stored for reference... Kindof like creating our own "Farmer's Palmanac" (No one roll your eyes at my cheesey verbage, Thank you! )
