Warm tropical weather

Well down at 35S on the SW coast of Australia you pray for warmth and summer. We almost always have cool nights even after a hot day. Well yesterday we had a warm and humid 27.4C day and then thunderstorms and heavy rain all night from around 6pm. My weather station bottomed out at 16.9C for a very short time but it was above 20C virtually all night. At 2am it was 21.8C. This morning at 7.30am it's 22.8C dead calm with 74% RH and the sound of more thunder rolling in. Just went for a walk in the garden and everything's damp warm and humid and the palms are just opening leaves everywhere. Happy days. I hope summer is going to be just like this.

by Cristóbal- 1 reply

From weather underground: Public Information Statement Statement as of 12:00 PM EST on January 11, 2010 ... Historic cold weekend in South Florida... Temperatures over the weekend and early Monday morning plunged to levels not seen in 20 years over South Florida in the wake of the Arctic cold front which blasted through the region early Saturday morning. Temperatures remained at or below 50 degrees for more than 48 consecutive hours, finally rising above 50 during the late morning to midday hours Monday. Although no records are kept of consecutive number of hours at or below 50 degrees, it is likely that this streak is among the longest on record…

I know this topic comes up from time to time but here we go again: When discussing the cold tolerance of palms could it be that the real criteria for marginal plant success is the number of hours below freezing as opposed to the actual low temperature? Here in the central valley a low temperature usually is followed by a gradual warming but in Florida, often a lower temperature occurs, but is followed by a quicker warming. Also, the photos of the maturing Roystonea in Houston, Tex. (9a) seem to support the idea that their number of days over 86 F is more important than the actual low temperatures (repeated failures in 9b) for this heat loving species. Do we ne…

SoCal overnight lows

Hard to believe that one week ago my daytime high temp was 100f. Overnight lows the last two nights have been 38f and 39f. Double checked at my buddy's place a few miles away. And his temp at the top of the canyon was also 38f. Just wondering what others in the area are seeing for low temps now.

Northern Gulf Winter Arriving Tomorrow

Low of 35 and maybe a light frost on Sunday morning. This is about our normal first frost, unlike last year when our first freeze arrived more than a month early. Tested out the fire pit last night. Can't wait for a bourbon with feet up watching the flames dance.

Since I have participated in many threads about weather that is either scorching or freezing I thought I would give dear ol' mother nature a shout out this week. For us humans (palms aside for the moment) this has to be some of the finest weather possible. Absolutely incredible!

Solar cycle suggesting colder winters ahead?

Interesting article on the solar cycle: https://nypost.com/2020/05/14/the-sun-has-entered-a-lockdown-period-which-could-cause-freezing-weather-famine/amp/ Apparently the sun is going through a weak period. When this happened in the early 19th century global temperatures dropping by 2f.

Deciduous Trees in the South
by AnTonY- 2 replies

I've read through lots of discussions in another forum about how deciduous tree-heavy the South is compared to other subtropical regions. Just one of the many examples here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/weather/1789938-why-does-inland-us-south-look.html Such discussions inspired me to do my own research on the matter. As a result of such research, I am now coming to the conclusion that the presence of deciduous trees in the South has nothing to do with climate, but rather, is a result of geographic/geologic technicalities. For one, places in East Asia at similar latitudes to the South are entirely broad-leafed evergreen, even southern South Korea, which sees a…

As Tropical Storm Sally threatens to become a hurricane before landfall from LA to AL, preparations are underway here! We are preparing for a potential hurricane impact, which is worst case scenario for this area of the coast. Drainage systems were flushed today, gutters were cleaned out, trenches will be dug tomorrow aswell as securing loose lightweight objects. Only minor prep here, but LA has already issued Mandatory Evacuations for unprotected levee areas. Anyone else preparing for Sally on the Gulf Coast?

Just walked out on the front porch. Its moving past chilly to cold. Its 48 on the way to a low of 44 degrees tonight. But the garden looks great, breathing a sigh of relief from the heat of summer. Too bad the cold won't stop here. First frost will change everything, and its only weeks away. Are you feeling the winds of change?

Frost warning for southern Ontario tonight

Possible frost. This has been a horrible spring here. Only a few days in 70s. Rain almost every other day tons of flooding in areas. Normally it’s safe to put tropical non cold hardy palms outside about now or a week after. Seems like the weather is pushing it. Usually here in the tobacco belt. It’s not planted until our May 2-4 weekend holiday. Usually after that lows start to get warmer. Let’s go already spring!
