First cyclone of the season has made it's appearance in the western Indian Ocean, TC Anais. Currently it's moving slowly south west towards Madagascar with sustained winds (1 minute average) of 185kph (100 kts) and gusts to 230kph (125 kts). The system is moving into an area of cooler water and into increased vertical wind shear causing a weakening. Within 4 days it's expected to begin swinging more southwards bringing it between La Reunion and Madagascar and weakening to a tropical low.

It's that time of year again, crazy how time flies. My coastal city just finished removing Hurricane Matthew debris (vegetation & fences) from my area this week and now we are talking about old man winter. This is a week out so can't take it too seriously, but it's good to be prepared. Saturday morning, December 10th looks like our first shot at much colder weather. Especially for north Florida.

January Weather Thread 1 2 3

I thought a January weather thread was already started, but I can't find it. Of course the main thing on my mind is the expected hard freeze on the night of Jan 2. I have protected my most exposed landscape bed in the front of the house, but it seems that most of my palms are just too big for me to realistically protect unless I want to erect several "palmscrapers". The rest is just going to have to ride it out. My forcast lows for Jan 2 at the time of this post (zip 33570): NOAA/NWS: 28F Accuweather: 29F TWC: 29F Wunderground: 35F ??? Cold Front 2015 - Surprise! 1 2 3 4
by gsytch- 129 replies

Forecasts are trending downwards for Thur/Fri as that piece of arctic air is set to intrude upon our beautiful weather. Hard to believe there will be freeze warnings in north Tampa Bay, as today was 83F with a dewpoint of 70F, just like yesterday. Tomorrow is suppose to be the same. Hinting at a freeze for inland Pasco/NE Hillsborough possible. Up and down, up and down.

First Cool Front 1 2 3
by NBTX11- 100 replies

Usually the first cool front of the season pushes through sometime in October, dropping overnight lows into the 50s for the first time in about 6 months or more. So far, no cool fronts, and none projected in the forecast. Last year it looks like the first front pushed through in mid Oct. This year we are still in summer mode...so the question is, when will the first real cool front of the fall push through and let us upen our windows at night for the first time. Everything is still growing like it would in summer...is refreshing air just around the corner... Oct 07 Hi Lo 1 90 74 2 90 74 3 89 69 4 89 64 5 90 66 6 90…

looks like there is a chance Florida could get hit hard. check National Hurricane center for details (that mo-fo is taking a super low track with a dramatic swing to the north - if it moves just alittle to the west of the spaghetti models - worse case it could transverse south to north the entire state....jast sayin

Worst freezes ever 1 2 3

Hello, I am curious about the big freezes that have hit traditionally subtropical areas like central and south Florida, south Texas and southern and coastal California. For example, how bad was the freeze in '89 here in Florida? Did the native Royals see damage in thier habitat in south Florida? Thanks, Bill

Why Do Some Beaches Have Clear Water While Others Don't?

Why do beaches (normally closer to and in the tropics) have clear water yet places like the South Carolina coastline don't? I know Sardinia, Italy has crystal clear water and it is pretty far up there.

In the 13 years I've lived here in Highlands County, Florida, I've never experienced the amazing number of days during the winter months the temperatures have been so below normal. The number of days this winter have become so numerous that I've lost track of them. Wanting to get a firm number of just how many days and nights were below normal, I decided to delve into the temperature archives of the Florida Automated Weather Network (FAWN) website. Yesterday I compiled some low, high, and average temperature statistics for the month of January, for the years 2006 through 2010. These temperatures were recorded at the Sebring, Florida, FAWN, which mainly serves the ag…

Well, time for another fitfull night. NWS has offered up this little tidbit to make us all feel better: MINIMUM TEMPERATURES TONIGHT ARE EXPECTED TO FALL TO THE LOW TO MID 20S WITH A FEW UPPER TEENS POSSIBLE AT THE COLDER LOCATIONS. TEMPERATURES AT THE COLDER LOCATIONS COULD FALL BELOW 32 DEGREES SOON AFTER SUNSET WITH THE LOWEST TEMPERATURES OCCURRING AROUND SUNRISE. DURATIONS OF TEMPERATURES OF 32 DEGREES OR LOWER COULD BE AS MUCH AS 12 TO 13 HOURS. Adding to all this BS, my fireplace insert(which I heat my house with) is belching smoke into the house everytime I open the door. Must be some kind of inversion going on...

From the Climate Prediction Center prognostic discussion (10-14 days out) "8-14 DAY OUTLOOK FOR JAN 23 - 29 2015 DESPITE THE AFOREMENTIONED UNCERTAINTY DURING THE 6-10 DAY PERIOD, THE WEEK-2 FORECAST IS ISSUED WITH FAIRLY HIGH CONFIDENCE. MODEL AGREEMENT REMAINS GOOD WITH RESPECT TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE RIDGE OVER FAR WESTERN NORTH AMERICA, WHICH IS FORECAST TO ALLOW MORE ARCTIC AIR TO INFLUENCE THE CONUS WITH TIME. THE 528 DM HEIGHT LINE LOCATED OVER THE GREAT LAKES IN THE MANUAL BLEND FINDS ITS ORIGIN OVER THE ARCTIC OCEAN, A SURE SIGN OF AN ANOMALOUSLY COLD PATTERN. IN FACT, THE FORECAST PATTERN BEARS MANY SIMILARITIES TO THE EXTREME COLD PERIODS TH…

Hi, Today it's very hot ... it's almost 34 C now (93F), tomorrow it's gonna be unsually hot the sya for the netherlands, the expect 37C (98F). For so far, it's a very hot, sunny and dry summer ! This month we don't have got anay rain yet, also june was dry with 3 day's that we have got some little rain. If this means the world climate is chaning, then i like it very much ! But the farmers here not, they can't give water tot the crops, because every where the water level is to low .. sow a lot of crops is dying or see very yellow. Grassfield, turned totally brown, and tree's losing the leaves to survive ... My exotics love this weather ! Greetz robbin

Global Warming 1 2 3

I guess as palm enthusiasts those of us outside of the tropics cannot get tired of this topic. Yesterday in the local paper was a feature story on how California's wine growing regions are in perile, that they did a new computer model study and found that the warming of various microclimates in Northern California will decimate the wine country areas. Of course the wineries interviewed were optomistic, saying they'd alter their growing practices, but none denied the probable warming trend. They did agree that the wine growing regions will be moving Northward up the Pacific coastline. And as I've posted before, my microclimate has warmed by 10 degrees F in the last 5…

It looks like it is going to be a cold one and that means snow. Because we are Palmsters, we need to be aware of our record snowfalls so we can compare.I start this with US but request add-ons from all warm blooded Palmster regions world-wide. The book is for 24 hour records: (1) Hawaii-0 in the cities (2)Arizona-Yuma-1.5 inches Tucson-6.8 inches Phoenix-1.0 inches Lake Havasu-3.0 inches (3)California-Burbank-4.7 inches Death Valley-1.1 inches Los Angeles-3.0 inches Palm Springs-2.0 inches San Diego- Trace (4)Florida-Daytona-Trace …
