Growth markers for 2008
by PalmGuyWC- 1 reply

Every year on Jan 1st I mark the palms that I want to check for frond growth for the coming year. I use the plastic ties that have an insert on one end. They are used for tieing up vines, etc. If it's a large palm I use two or three ties to make a ring. I then put it over the newest emerging sphere, usually a few inches long, and then at the end of the year it's easy to count the fronds that have grown into the ring. This way there is no gessing how fast your palm grew in a year. If I want to check how fast the emerging sphere is growing, rather than just put a mark with a waterproof felt tip pin where the sphere is emerging from a sheth, I stick a bamboo stake in the…

Heard Anything About Next Week?
by Mr. Coconut Palm- 5 replies

Has anyone heard anything about next week? I saw something online earlier about another Polar Vortex heading South and Southeast the middle of January. Supposedly, it won't bring freezing temps to Florida, but close to it. One of our local Corpus Christi weathermen said that next week we could be in for our coldest temps yet this winter, yet the forecast through next Tuesday as I recall only showed lows in the low 40's and highs in the mid to upper 50's. We had a high on Sat. of only 45F and low of 43F (airport) with rain, so it would have to be colder than that to qualify for the coldest so far this winter.

Cyclone Marcos, Darwin. Northern Territory.

Back in March 2018 Darwin suffered a direct hit from a small ( Cat 2 ) Tropical Cyclone. Winds peaked at 140klm/h and really only blew for about 3 and half hours. Rain for the event at my place was less than 100mm. Whilst the City was spared from any major structural damage, the vegetation and trees copped a severe beating throughout the city and suburbs with literally thousands of mature trees felled and some suburbs were without power for nearly a week. My garden, which I have nurtured for nigh on 30 years was pretty well trashed.during the event and my bac kyard jungle is no longer a jungle....oh well, luckily plants grow fairly fast here in the Top End.... …

Record breaking snowstorms in southeast Europe

So far to date, this winter storm is undoubtedly the biggest event so far in Europe this season. Excluding the unseasonably warm spell for western and central Europe back in late December / early January, there hasn't been much else for us to talk about. However, this snowfall event is certainly significant and more than likely record breaking for Greece and Turkey. Northern Syria got hit pretty bad too, as did eastern Europe in general. I certainly don't recall many of these areas getting hit this bad before. It must be the worst snow storm to hit the Med region in several decades, surely? Starting with Greece, this was Athens on Monday afternoon, before things got …

Just saw this on the front page of the Wall Street Journal. ouch Here's a link to CNN, hope our friends in Iberia are all okay. http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/18/europe/portugal-fire/index.html "The head of Portugal's judiciary police told reporters the fire was started by lightning. "We have been able to determine that the origin of the fire was caused by dry thunderstorms," José Maria Almeida Rodrigues said, according to the Portuguese state-run news agency Lusa." "The blaze spread Saturday to the Pedrógão Grande commu…

California Freeze Watch 2014
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

Oh no, here we go again, I was crossing my fingers I would not be posting this, because as of yesterday, most of the various models runs all showed the cold airmass to move East and bypass California. The outliers showing the arctic airmass heading into California were discarded. However, several of the other models have now switched to this more disastrous solution. There is a potential for a hard freeze Friday into Saturday night in California. It may not come to pass given the high uncertainty in the models, but better be prepared. See the NWS discussion re-posted below. Either way, the rest of the week features some definite frosts every Morning until Saturday, an…

Cheer up the average temperatures start going back up in January. At least here in TX, and in FL, they bottom out around now and start going back in the right direction. CA, probably not yet. In another couple months cold weather will be a distant memory.

Record breaking warmth for New Year's in Europe?

I may have to crack out the shorts next week for work. My written rule is that anything over 16C / 61F is typically shorts and t-shirt weather in my line of work. Otherwise I will overheat if I am working in jeans and a hoodie inside the warehouse. Those forecasted nighttime temperatures are ridiculous as well for 51N during the last week of December. I would expect nighttime lows of 13-14C in July, let alone late December. Some model runs are putting the nighttime lows at 15C for Wednesday and Thursday following a high of 18C / 64F on Wednesday! 14C at 850hPa translates to about 17-18C at ground level. It will be interesting to see just how warm it get…

Signs of Spring

While Groundhog's day is still a few days off, and there is still a month and 20, or so days until we reach the official start of it, I though it would be fun to discuss what signs of spring you have seen or, how you know the cold and dreary days of winter are on their last legs.. Living in several different places over the years, it is interesting to have experienced how each area changes as the days grow longer and winter's grip fades away. Especially in the places I lived where Snow could still be on the ground on St Patrick's Day. Anyway, feel free to chime in with your thoughts/experiences. Back in CA it was flowers on the Acacias, Almond trees and Saucer Magnoli…

Wet drought in WA, OR and yes CA
by Palm crazy- 0 replies

Interesting article from R.S. (raw story) website. The desiccated soils and barren slopes of California have grabbed news headlines for months on end as the state is in its fourth year of a crippling drought that has forced unprecedented statewide water restrictions and billions of dollars in agricultural losses. But while most eyes have been trained on the plight of the Golden State, its neighbors to the north are also facing a dearth of water, victims of some of the same atmospheric forces that have left California parched. Oregon and Washington aren’t currently in the same dire straits as California, having at least received a fair bit of rain this winter, but t…

August 20, 2020 3 AM a wall of furry fire storm bears down on my garden like a tidal wave. Twelve hours later there was a smoldering chard landscape as far as the eye could see. This story may take a while to explain so I will spill it out in pieces as there is so much to say. I began my garden when I joined the Society in 1977. Many of my palms came from the Seed Bank at that time. Others came from my collections of travels to remote places. My garden contains about 100+ species/varieties of palms, some 400 or so trees about a 28 acre property. Many are now 30- 40 years old. Basically palms are survivors! A good percentage retained small canopies that never burne…

Melbourne (population 3 million) the capital city of the state of Victoria had an average temp of 16C well above the long term average of 12C and the highest since records began 150+ years ago. A similar story in Adelaide (population 1 million) the capital city of South Australia the average minimum temp was 12C well above the long term average of 10C and the highest since records began . The average maximum was 2C above normal although not a record. These trends were repeated throughout the region.

Sizzling in San Francisco
by Silas_Sancona- 5 replies

As mentioned over on another thread, record heat has been the rule across the west this summer. Today, it made it's presence felt across parts of California which have largely been spared most of the summer ..and in a big way. Earlier, i'd posted some regional stats as of 1pm from the weather service office in S.F. Needless to say, there were still acouple hours left to reach max heating for the day.. Checking over other spots across the Central Valley, L.A. and the San Diego area ( closer to the coast), many of the realy hot spots were centered around the bay area. Officially, San Francisco destroyed it's record of 103f, reaching 106f.. Monterrey hit 101f.. m…

30 years later...

Not sure how I'd forgotten about it but an article released on the subject today reminded me of one of the craziest events I have witnessed / experienced thus far in my time on this planet. 30 years ago, I was sitting in the house going thru my backpack while awaiting the start of the World Series. Mom was at work up in Redwood City, sister was at her job several miles from the house. Little would I know that in just a couple minutes, the movement of ground just a few miles south of me, up in the Santa Cruz Mountains would unleash chaos, or that the start of that game would become an iconic moment, both in the sports world, but in history. I remember sitting there…

Red Tide Watch

For anyone locally, ( Tampa/Sarasota area) or others considering possible beach trips while in the area over the next couple weeks, be advised that a closely monitored Red Tide which has been lurking roughly 40 miles just off the coast is looking more certain to reach the beaches in coming days, esp. with the wind pattern looking to stay moving west to east. According to the latest observations, it has elongated from roughly 50-60 miles in length to 90 miles currently. It is also looking to be one of the largest blooms since 2006. Already, had noticed something "different" about the water quality along the beaches/ shorelines along the mouth of the Manatee River/ Sara…

Warm tropical weather

Well down at 35S on the SW coast of Australia you pray for warmth and summer. We almost always have cool nights even after a hot day. Well yesterday we had a warm and humid 27.4C day and then thunderstorms and heavy rain all night from around 6pm. My weather station bottomed out at 16.9C for a very short time but it was above 20C virtually all night. At 2am it was 21.8C. This morning at 7.30am it's 22.8C dead calm with 74% RH and the sound of more thunder rolling in. Just went for a walk in the garden and everything's damp warm and humid and the palms are just opening leaves everywhere. Happy days. I hope summer is going to be just like this.
