Ice on the pond and 23 this morning
by Keith N Tampa (ex SoJax)- 10 replies

Two weeks of 10-20 degrees below average (with some days closer to 30 degrees below average) and now the pond on the property is icing over! Unbelievable! Coldest stretch of weather ever for this part of the world (at least since they've been keeping records). Ironically, not many (if any) new record lows (count me as thankful for that). I'm sure ready for spring.

Miami is 10b. The Spanish island of Ibiza is zone 10b too. Does that mean whatever palms are growing in Miami can grow in Ibiza ?

Wind Chill effects on tropicals
by SunnyFl- 7 replies

Here is a question I haven't seen info on: is the effect of wind chill on cold-sensitive plants comparable to the effect of cold? For instance, if a palm fries at 30, and the temp is well above that but the wind chill is around 30, will the palm be just as damaged? What has been your experience?

Another CA freeze/frost possible

Quoted from NOAA SF Bay area 3:09PM DEC 17 "A COLD FRONT PUSHES ACROSS THURSDAY. EACH MODEL RUN IS WETTER WITH THIS SYSTEM...BUT THE WINDS LOOK TO BE LESS. THIS SYSTEM WILL HAVE MUCH MORE COLD AIR WITH IT...SO HAVE MENTIONED SNOW DOWN TO 2500 FEET. WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO SEE A COATING OF SNOW FRIDAY MORNING IN THE HILLS. RIDGING BUILDS OVERHEAD FRIDAY INTO THE WEEKEND. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING LOOK TO BE QUITE COLD...WITH 20S AND 30S POSSIBLY WIDESPREAD ACROSS THE DISTRICT. THERE ARE TIMING ISSUES BUT IT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER ROUND OF RAIN AND WIND IS POSSIBLE AROUND CHRISTMAS EVE" Perhaps a white christmas in the hills? Looks like its go…

10B zones in SoCal gardens
by Mark_NoVA- 18 replies
- 2.4k views
I've read a lot of comments on the board about the cold-hardiness requirements for palms in Southern California--sounds like the only frost-free areas are rare microclimates, and that typical winters, even in most of the San Diego area, see low temperatures below 30F. Does that sound accurate? Recently, though, I noticed that a fair amount of SoCal-ians list their gardens as a 10B climate. Given the above, that doesn't make sense--10B corresponds to 35-40F. The minimum temperature requirements of most palms, except those in Lipstick Palm range should be fine for 10B. If the above generalization is accurate, though, these SoCal gardens should be considered 10A or ev…

A very wet start to winter in the tropics ..
by aussiearoids- 13 replies

Oh well the 1 week drought had to end sooner or later .. been pouring all day . Had several heavy showers down the beach yesterday , so the Monster market was a bit of a wash out . I was a man on a mission and donned raincoat and gumboots as I had some very exotic fruit trees to pick up . Really hope it does not get to cold this winter , don't want recent plantings freezing to death , BRRRRR it is a cool 22C at the moment ... I may have to put on a jacket . yeh yeh , I know what a softie , but once you are completely 'troppo' I think your blood turns to a thick treacle like substance and needs high temps or RUM to circulate properly.

Flooding ?? Water tornado's ?
by Exotic Life- 16 replies

After a very heat July the first 4 day's of august are very wet for here. Some parts of the netherlands have got 150 mm/5.90 Inch of rain, and that in 4 day's. Normally there fell in the hole month august 60 mm/2.36 inch of rain, so this gonna be a very wet month. I recorded in my own garden so far 97 mm/ 3.81 inch of rain. Because the heat the ground is closed en hard, so the rain comes so much in a short period the rain can't directly go into the ground, you get little floodings on the streets gardens and houses. The picture's are from a part in the east of the netherlands. Also the last few days there are some water tornado's, i don't know how you called them. Be…

Cyclone Hamish to hit Queensland
by Cycadcenter- 23 replies

Good luck to everyone up north again, looks as though you're in for a good one. Cyclone Hamish strengthens, expected to hit Whitsunday March 06, 2009 11:00pm HAMISH is expected to hammer the Whitsundays coast tomorrow after being upgraded to a severe category 3 cyclone as it continues down the east coast. Last night it was dumping heavy rain on coastal centres from Cooktown to just north of Ingham as it travelled roughly parallel to the coast about 250km offshore. "Our best estimate is that sometime late on Sunday evening it will make a right turn when it is somewhere near the Whitsundays," weather bureau deputy regional director Bruce Gunn said. "Thi…

Per @RedRabbit’s suggestion: here’s a thread for temperature screenshots for cold events during the rest of this winter. If we need to further compartmentalize locations: we can further specify or create a new thread that would entail more specific areas.

Concern with USDA hardiness maps
by NC_Palms- 19 replies
- 2.4k views
I was thinking, since the USDA hardiness maps only measure the minimum average temperatures for only a period of time, it would seem like the post 1980’s hardiness maps of the Southeast make everything seem colder than it really is. For example, in the earliest maps created in the 40’s and 60’s, zone 8 extends much further inland in the Southeast. But in the post 1980’s maps, climates that were originally labeled as zone 8 became either 7a or 7b. Even in Florida, most of the state from Orlando and south had originally a zone 10 climate (zones 11+ didn’t exist yet) so it explains how royal palms had a much more extensive range father north up the Florida peninsula.

Where is the Rainy Season (Florida)? 1 2
by chinandega81- 2 followers

I can't remember a dry and cool May...much less late May...in South Florid. Highs have been in the low 80s the past 10 days, with low humidy and of course, no rain other than a few random sprinkles just enough to get the car messy. Even the ocean temps are below average, with all this wind as of late. Does anyone look at the models and that can tell me if and when they are showing and increase in moisture for Florida? I don't see anything on the local 10 day forecast....it seems like we are stuck in a lovely, early Spring pattern which is great however, my tropicals want and need humidity and rain!!

Flooding in Queensland
by Walter John- 21 replies

Whilst we may be complaining about the cold or whatever , spare a thought for the residents and farmers of many Queensland towns and those of Northern New South Wales who have suffered major loss due to flood. How ironic, half the state of Queensland flooded the other half in drought, wow, Australia, she's tough. No wonder we like our footy, no helmets thank you. I wonder how some of our native palms went or will go with the iminent flooding of Rockhampton areas.

Hurricane Kathleen CALIFORNIA 1976
by DoomsDave- 1 reply

I thought we didn't get 'canes here in Cali. Turns out I was wrong. There was a hurricane, Kathleen that reached the California and Arizona deserts in 1976. Didn't make the news that I can recall. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Kathleen_(1976) Anyone have memories? "Hurricane Kathleen was a tropical cyclone that caused destructive impacts in California. On September 7, 1976, a tropical depression formed; two days later it accelerated north towards the Baja California Peninsula. Kathleen brushed the Pacific coast of the peninsula as a hurricane on September 9 and made landfall as a fast-moving tropical storm the next day. With its cir…

FLORIDA DROUGHT 1 2
by gsytch- 2 followers

It has been about 6 weeks since it last rained here. A long dry spell, even for Florida standards in fall. The forecast for the next 10 days - zero chance of rain. I have lived here a long time, and this is a long time to go without appreciable rainfall. We need some rain here badly yet long term says dry. I believe we may be in for some serious trouble if it doesn't begin raining soon.
