"This isn't winter . . . right?
by happ- 35 replies

WXAmerica - October 15, 2006 "If you know anything about how to read numerical model output, you have probably realized that the longer term forecast for most of North America is more than a bit bizarre. It is unusual to get one intense blocking ridge at high latitudes in October. But if you buy into the line of thought provided by the most recent, there are TWO impressive blocks present: a thumb projection complex along the West Coast of the continent and a regressive lateral Rex signature in the vicinity of the Davis Strait and NU. Even if the 0z GGEM (a clear outlier with its presentation of no PNA-styled ridge) turns out to be correct, near-record cold will be p…

What Are "Sunset Climate" Zones?

What exactly are sunset climate zones? I tried to look it up and basically every site just says, "it takes in all the factors of growing in a climate" and then doesn't really explain it. Is a higher number good or bad? What's the scale?

When Does Spring Arrive in Florida?
by chinandega81- 1 follower

Obviously the calendar says March 21, but what criteria do you go by for it to "feel" like Spring has arrived in Florida or the subtropics? If we go by daily average highs, it's tough in South Florida. The coolest high is 76 so we would have to pick a higher number, say 80...but that would be a more summerlike temperatures vs. Springtime temps. We could go by day length or sun angle, and that to me makes it "feel" like Spring sometime in March, which coincides with the calendar date. We could also go by when things start to first bloom...my favorite....I notice Hong Kong orchard trees begin to bloom in December...but that feels too early. Mango trees start to bloom h…

Whens this So Cal weather stop? 1 2

This time and Oct-Nov are some of the hardest times for me. The Santa Ana type weather, makes nice temps, but my usual 50%+ humidity drops to under 20% and I start getting sunburn, yet its still cool enough at night that the palm roots are slow on the moisture uptake. So the best I can do is spritz my leafs and pray for some partly cloudy days...

South Hilton Head Island, Zone 9a
by PalmTreeDude- 3 replies
- 2.8k views
So at Hilton Head Island (south side of the island) I saw MANY zone 9a palms, but not on the north side, I think the south side is truly 9a. Let me show you a map I made, the blue area is where I saw most of the 9a palms. Also a lot of palms that like warmer areas of 8b. (The picture that looks like there is no palms has Medjool Date Palms in it, sorry for the bad picture I was in the car.) I saw Queen Palms from time to time as well and Phoenix roebelenii.

Confused about temperatures on hills and valleys
by Sandy Loam- 1 follower

I have never quite figured this out. If you live here in the northern Florida, it is beneficial for the tropical gardener to live on a hill top in winter because cold air masses can be significant overnight. The valleys receive more cold air as heat rises. (This problem doesn't exist in the southern extremities of Florida, of course, because it never really gets cold there). Florida is extremely flat and low-lying, so a hill top here is not very high. It is simply higher than the valleys. Why, then, is it the opposite in Arizona and California? For example, I see that the lowest parts of Arizona (Yuma especially) stay warm practically all year. As you trav…

Looks like we may see some more 30's come Wednesday! They're calling for around 45* for Tampa and We usually see 10* lower (give or take) where I'm at, here in Polk County. I thought winter was all finished up since we've already seen a couple of 90's and a lot of mid / upper 80's!

This has been an interesting year. Last year,California got the cold air. This year,Florida did.Can Texas be far behind? Louisiana and Arizona were also warmer than normal. The High temperature per Weather Underground for Dec was Alice,Tx on Dec.27,2008 at 93F.For Jan.,Santa Ana,Ca was 90F on the 12th.For Feb.,Edinburg,Tx was 93F on the 13th.California showed up in a big way, especially from Jan.11-22.They had a run of highs from 90 to the upper 80's during that time frame.South Texas is just unbelievable for Winter MH's with upper 80's to low 90's a day or two after a cold front.Florida can jump into MH only when a cold front hits Texas and it is cool in California allo…

Post Texas lows this decade 2000-2009
by texaspalms- 18 replies
- 2.8k views
Our over-winter lows have risen conciderably in many locations normally unsuitable for palms in the past. I was wondering what the changes have been for the normal palm-friendly areas as well. I see that he hardiness zones have moved inland considerably but also know (at least for SE TX) that they still don't reflect a nearly immediate-coast wide move to 10a temps with nearly a unmolested 11a on lower South Padre Island for the last 11 years! Please let me know what your temps have become Thanks, Bryan

Heavy rains hit many parts of Hawaii
by Al in Kona- 30 replies

How are the rest of you Hawai`i guys doing from the heavy rains (thunderstorms) hitting our islands? How much have you recorded? For us in Kona the day started out very nice, then mid day I began to hear thunder rumbling and dark clouds appearing mauka (upslope). Thunder increased and by late afternoon we were having a deluge at times. Probably the heaviest rain I've seen here falling in such a short period of time. I recorded 83.5mm (2.5 inches) so far. The forecast says we can expect continued heavy showers at times thru tomorrow. Let's see how accurate they are on this one. I hope it clears out by Friday (Feb. 1) for the HIPS annual BBQ dinner and palm auction …

Coldest night of year on tap 1 2
by NBTX11- 41 replies
- 2.7k views
Well, tonight is the big one and probably the last one of the year. Supposed to go down to the mid 20s (24-26F). Coldest up until now has been 29F. On the positive note, we're supposed to have a good rebound, with 70s in the 7 day forecast next week. Perfect setup tonight for a hard radiational freeze. Temps are supposed to drop like a rock. It's already in the low 40s and the sun just went down. This makes 2 years in a row that the coldest night of year is in Feb, and not Dec or Jan. It's supposed to be getting warm around here, avg high is nearing 70F. I'm tired of this, bring on the heat.

I thought that the comparisons between a few of the locations where people live on the forum was interesting. I would have put Hilo here Honolulu is but it was not on the site where I got the information. I realize that there is substantial difference between to two locations. I guess I live in the hottest place among the ones I have posted. The data was collecte over a 10 year period.

North American Winter 2011 - 2012
by amazondk- 9 replies

I took a look at forcasts for North America this winter and came up with this map on neoweather.com. If this is the way it goest things do not look too bad for the southeast US palm areas. It does look bad for the northern plains where my parents live. And, if possible I hope to get there in the winter, as I can not make it before.
