I check forecasts all the time on several different websites. But Meterologists at Accuweather are screwed up in the head, at least I hope. Accuweather has this forcasting system, where they reach out 15 days, which seems a little crazy if you as me. They seem accurate for the first 5 days, and sometimes the next five days. But between 10 days and 15 days, they are seriously wrong. They say that we are suppose to have snow and rain all the way out. It says that we will have temps in the mid to low 40's for highs and temps near 30 or lower for the lows. With snow and rain. They have to have some issues. Within the past few decades, we have been seeing an extraordinary growth of the global tropics and subtropics towards both poles. On average, the tropics expand toward the poles 93 miles per decade. Just in time for MLK day, we're supposed to have lows in the "low 30's". I have a King, Triangle, S. uresana, and A. micrantha pushing spears and two Queens starting to bloom! I don't know if it'll do any good, but I broadcast muriate of potash and epsom salts and watered them in. It's probably not soon enough for them to absorb the anitfreeze. Steve

That time of the year is still several months away, so dont worry about it yet. But, why am I making this thread then? We have Invest 90L off the east coast on...*checks date*…. January 16th! This Invest area is not expected to really do anything, and has been tagged with a 0% chance of development by the NHC today. Satellite data indicates that it *may* be a Subtropical Storm, but this is such a marginal case where it may or may not be that its best to just wait to call it anything until post season analysis. So the other day at a stop light I snapped a picture of a small island on a lake, the water around it is about 15 feet deep and this is in Virginia on the boarder of zone 7a/7b. I am wondering, if the very middle of this small island would have a solid zone 7b or maybe even a zone 7b/8a climate? It has a lot of canopy to protect from winds and everything, just a thought I had, I am curious to hear what other people say.

What do you guys think the definition of tropical is? Mean temps above 64 for each month in the year, or by looking at vegetation? It is certainly easier to do so by vegetation, like saying if coconuts and other tropicals will be full term in an area. Temperature readings from the internet are often skewed, as many times what you are reading for one city is often from a station in another, often colder, city. I would bet that certain areas of costal St. Pete, Anna Maria Island, and some of the other islands in the area do indeed have mean temps above 64 for the entire year, but since stations are usually based on the mainland the readings are skewed. Which area of the world has the highest year round low temperatures? I saw the post by Kris about his Cyrtostachys renda problem in which he described his night time lows as being between 77 and 82 degrees, in other words Cyrtostachys renda heaven. The long summers were brutal during the 7 years I spent in Taiwan (without A/C) when months would go by where we wouldn't even see the temperature drop into the 70's. We would wake up in the early morning and it would already be over 80 degrees (28 C.) and the sun wouldn't even have risen yet. Are there places on the planet where low temperatures are like this year round?

What do you all think of this? I have started collecting data for my area regarding not only the low temperature, but the amount of sub-freezing temperatures experienced. Obviously, just about any palm could be walked through a deep freeze at -10 and survive with no damage, while I imagine many would be toast if you subjected them to 2 weeks of even mild freezing temperatures continuously. To capture both the severity and length of the freeze I am taking the hourly temperature observations for my area, then starting when temperatures drop below freezing and continuing until they rise above freezing, subtracting the actual temperatue from 32 degrees each hour, and…

Is it just here or has your climate zone also shifted in the past decade as a result of global warming? For the past seven years, mine has. I am supposed to be on the border of USDA zone 8b and 9a, but I have just had seven consecutive years of zone 9b winters, including at least one zone 10a winter too. I don't know whether this will be a permanent change, but I am taking risks by making zone 9b plantings now. 2010 was a zone 8b winter here, so I am definitely taking a risk based on the assumption that zone 8b is gone forever.
