How Well Do The Appalachian Mountains Block Cold Air?
by PalmTreeDude- 27 replies

How well do the Appalachian mountains block cold air? Are they simply not tall enough to block as much cold air as the Rockies on the West Coast (areas that share the same latitude as me on the West Coast and that are as far from the ocean as me are zone 9a/9b for the most part)? From this tempature map (I am currently just Southwest of Richmond) it seems like they do a good job. Although this is never something I really paid attention too (much).

Plant Heat Zone Map 1 2
by chris78- 41 replies
- 3.8k views
In 1997 the American Horticultural Society came out with the "AHS PLANT HEAT ZONE MAP".... It has 12 zones, and are based on the Average number of days per year that the temperature were 86F or above. It was developed because plants have heat requirements to grow, flower and fruit successfully. As we all know, zone 10 in Florida is a different animal than zone 10 in California. Many of the zone 10 palms that grow like weeds in Florida, struggle in zone 10 in California if they live at all. Lets face it, there are more zone 10 plants growing in zone 9 in Florida than than there are growing in zone 10 or 11 in California. The map places South Florida in zone 11 or 12.…

Comparing Climates
by osideterry- 39 replies

I've been on this forum just over a year now, and it's been an education in learning about what others here experience. It's interesting finding people on the other side of the world with a similar climate. Our Southern California climate seems to be mirrored most by New Zealand, Southern Australia, Greece and maybe Spain. I wish there were more Mediterranean folks posting to compare notes with. Anyone else find people a world away with a similar climate?

USDA Zone 10 in Arizona?
by insipidtoast- 15 replies

This USDA zone map perplexed me the other day. http://www.arborday.org/media/zones.cfm If you look at the area around the Colorado River between California and Arizona, there is clearly a large landmass labelled as zone 10. How is that possible so far inland? I'm skeptical about the map, but it seems other maps corroborate this evidence: http://www.cliftyview.com/img/usda_map_full.jpg As seen there as well, most of the area east and southeast from Palo Verde is labelled as zone 10. http://www.arborday.org/media/zones.cfm

Hottest & Driest Places in FL
by ahosey01- 2 followers

Curious the hottest (not warmest) places in FL, and also the driest. All available climate maps and info I can find are a.) climate classifications - tropical savannah, tropical wet & dry, etc. - or b.) USDA zone maps. Anybody know the answer to these questions? My thought would be somewhere far south and also inland.

Can Florida Close

Accuweather Dude Joe Bastardi predicted at some early time (?)that Florida should enjoy(?) December because Winter was over after that in Florida. In Southeast Florida, it is difficult to complain. Particularly, after last Jan.2-12, we have experienced an outstanding January. We have had a few cool days with highs in the 60'sF.but lows only in the mid 40'sF.Primarily, this has been highs in the mid 70's with lows around 60 F.to upper 50'sF. This is perfect weather for those of us, who sweat from Feb. to Nov. That stated, in 1899 armeggedon hit Florida, Texas and the entire South on Feb.13-14.Will armeggedon hit again this year? Is Bastardi for real? Does anyone know the…

How My Latitude Compares To Some Places Around The World 1 2
by PalmTreeDude- 53 replies
- 3.7k views
So I found this pretty neat website where you can click on an exact point on the map and it draws a line in the Northern and Southern hemispheres of where that latitude is. This is pretty crazy because a lot of the places that share my latitude (and many others here) are capable of growing palms that can't grow here (and that are many zones less cold hardy than here) due to those few cold snaps we can get. Here is the site, what areas around the world share your latitude? http://mapfrappe.com/appisoll.html

Here we go again in Florida !!! 1 2

The cold weather is starting a whole month earlier than last year. This morning I woke up to 41 degrees in Miami beach. Next week I heard there is supposed to be an even colder blast. The coconut palms took a beating here last winter. They just started to look good again. I fear that many palms that were weakened by the cold during the winter of 2010 will not survive if we have a repeat performance.Someone told me that 50% of the Coconuts in SW Florida were killed last winter. It breaks my heart.

Our September has been almost ideal from the plants point of view. Quite a few days very windy, which is not ideal, but a reasonable amount of rain. Daytime temperatures have been average or just above, but night time temperatures have been consistently above or well above average, which is great for keeping the growing season going, as long as we don't have a rapid change. The considerable amount of cloud cover that has been keeping the night time temperatures up will have reduced light and hence growth rate (along with the effect of reduced temperatures), so hopefully the transition to dormancy will be fairly smooth. This month has been very similar to last October …

Howdyall: I note that last night we were all yakking about how cold it was going to get, as I felt the temps at Ken Johnson's place here south of Miami fall and fall and fall. But, no evident cold damage, though more cold weather is expected for this evening/morning. But . . . Tampa, Orlando, JAX, Tallahassee, YIKE, it got cold there. So, how'd you all fare? Signs of Autumn 1 2

After unrelenting heat, California will experience a significant cool down for a few days. And next week an even cooler airmass should invade the Southwest from the Gulf of Alaska. None of this means anything in October except maybe some nights in the 50's If it were winter, these polar fronts could cause damaging frost.

California November Weather Thread 1 2
by osideterry- 47 replies
- 3.6k views
November is a month where our all time record highs are well into the 90s and our lows have seen 29F (Oceanside Airport). We have more sunshine days in November than any other month of the year. At 11:45am my sensor is reading 88.2F, and it was 47F at 7 this morning. It's too hot to do yard work, and so dry you keep dehydrating which can lead to a nasty headache. Loving the heat though, and living with the lows.

Houston we have a problem
by Ed in Houston- 31 replies

The Houston forecast has three days of hard freezes of low to mid 20's, with the coldest being Friday night. Houston is a pretty big place and I expect that over the city the temperatures will range from about 19 to 26 with 80% of the area being in the 21-24 range. It is likely that this will be the coldest since 1989. During the last 20 years, Houston has experienced a lot of growth with the attending new landscapes to go with the new development that has taken place. Over the last 20 years, two palm have become ubiquitous, queens and pygmy dates. The "tropical look" of Houston is dominated by these in many areas. Of coarse there are many Sabals, Meds, CID, Butia and …

Much discussion about warm Non-Tropical area's on the Board. How about those area's that are technically tropical(ie below 23 degrees Latitude North/South)that experience colder than expected temperatures. This,of course, requires Sea Level. My surprise nominee is Hong Kong, located at 22 degrees 15 minutes.Notwithstanding this Tropical location,32F.is the recorded low.(Freezing in the Tropics?)The average temperature in Jan. is 60.5F.The average temperature of the Ocean is 63F. during the month of Jan.Any other likekind examples?
