What have you Heard? 1 2

While attending the recent Tropical Fern and Exotic Plant Society annual auction, the subject of the upcoming cold season was discussed in detail. Many folks in this Society grow some pretty rare and tender plants. The prevailing consensus was that we are in for a bad one. From el nino to we are "way past due", I'm unsure as to what scientific evidence was given.. However, most were old timer plant collectors. What have you heard?

Living in Tampa Bay, we always go through ups and downs when it comes to rains. This winter, I received a bounty, and considering the cold, not when I wanted it. Now that summer has set in, I am missing almost all of the rains. In fact, I will be going out to water after 7pm as things are wilting rather badly. Last Saturday we got 2" in less than hour. Since then, nothing but a few showers and HOT HOT SUNNY. 80F this morning's low, 91F high. When I need it most - I miss it! It thundered every day since Monday, storms were pouring on inland areas and to the east. Now they say "drying up" this week! ARGHHHHHHHHHHH Anyone else go through this? It is so frustrating. Just a 1…

Fall/WInter weather in the PNW talk. 1 2 3 4

New season new thread. So only 3 weeks ago we were in the 80's and now barely reaching 60 the last few days or more. The return of semi-regular rain has been great, but aside from one event where I recorded an inch over 2.5 days I haven't been getting very much. Rain/drizzle seems to be coming through about once a week but I'm picking up 0.05" give or take. It appears that the rain is just that little bit further north, I know Portland proper has had much more rain than what I seem to be getting. I often see the dark clouds but they seem to skirt around me. I dug a hole for a new olive tree and after the top 1/4" the ground was dry. Most days are still sunny …

Hi all, This was a reply I wrote to a personal message. I think it is a good time to discuss this as now is the time that we are planting new stuff and the placement now is crucial for long term survial during winter. The original question was regarding the zones in the area and I went off on a tagent. Please correct any fallicious info in here as I do not want to lead another new palm nut in the wrong direction! Hi Jeffrey, I would have to think the part of Apollo Beach you are planning to live in is easily 10A except for winters like 1989 and 2003 which were advective freezes (windy) as opposed to radiational freezes which are much more common. The proximity to…

the "Biblical" California flood of 1862
by trioderob- 9 replies

Beginning on Christmas Eve, 1861, and continuing into early 1862, an extreme series of storms lasting 45 days struck California. The storms caused severe flooding, turning the Sacramento Valley into an inland sea, forcing the State Capital to be moved from Sacramento to San Francisco for a time, and requiring Governor Leland Stanford to take a rowboat to his inauguration. Truly prodigious rains resulted, with the mining town of Sonora receiving 8.5 feet of rain over a 2-month period ! William Brewer, author of “Up and down California,” wrote on January 19, 1862, “The great central valley of the state is under water—the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys—a reg…

Huge Storm on the Horizon? 1 2
by happ- 68 replies

It is still several days away but worth noting that a significant change in the pattern for California is starting today with strong onshore flow of clouds and much cooler temps. But the big story is the formation of a massive storm system that "may" give us abundant rainfall out of the tropics starting late in the week and continuing into next week. Here's a segment of the NWS_LA discussion: ..LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...ON FRIDAY A LARGE UPPER LOW MOVES SOUTH OUT OF THE GULF OF ALASKA AND SETS UP ABOUT 700 MILES WEST OF SEATTLE. THIS LOW THEN SPINS AND WOBBLES AROUND FOR ABOUT 5 DAYS. THE WESTERLY FLOW AROUND THE SOUTH SIDE OF THIS LOW FIRST TAPS INTO A 3000 MILE LONG…

Using supplemental heat source for frost protection
by WestCoastGal- 12 replies

Question about using supplemental heating for frost/freeze protection on your palms or plants. This is our first year with the yard being fully landscaped and haven't had to worry about it before now. The palms we planted in our yard are cold hardy for our area (Zone 9b, Sunset 14) so not concerned about them during this upcoming cold spell here in the SF bay area. However to complement the tropical look of our palms we did plant out some more frost tender plants this past year like Strelitzia reginae (orange birds of paradise, cold hardy range 25-30?) which have been looking great in bloom and near bloom and I really hate to see them damaged at this point. Picked up a…

Low Humidity 1 2 3

Summer is here in South Florida. The Gulf Stream is about 90 degrees. Our low temperatures are angling towards the low 80's.The most difficult aspect ,however, is the relative humidity. When my wife and family travel West, one of the most enjoyable features is the lack of humidity. 110 degrees F feels like 85 degrees F here. My question is : Do you realize how nice it is when you live year round in that environment? How does it feel when you come to Florida? Is there anything bad you can say about the lack of humidity?

Green: 9b+ Orange: 10a- Brown: 10a+ Red: 10b- Purple: 10B+ Pink: 11a- *Areas unshaded simply aren't rated. **No guarantee of accuracy, don't plant anything based on this.

UK Worst Freeze Since 2010 1 2 3
by Foxpalms- 3 followers

The Polar vortex is sending freezing air towards the UK creating a cold setup quite possibly worse than the 2010 freeze. All the air from the arctic is being funneled down onto us. We are under clear skies all night tonight the temperature in London is slowly dropping whilst the countryside and the outskirts are plummeting in temperature. This freeze has practically appeared out of nowhere after a long hot summer and warm autumn/fall. It was supposed to be just above freezing however the last week the forecast got worse and worse until we ended up with this, an arctic air mass and clear skies at night. This is the worst possible scenario whilst snow might also be bad the…

NOAA proved it.Using Dec./2009 thru Feb/2010, the following locations in South Florida checked in as follows: Miami(1895)/67.21F/-2.8/34th coldest Ft Lauderdale(1912)/66.47F./-1.9F./15th coldest West Palm Beach(1888)/64.1F./-3.2F./10th coldest Naples(1942)/63.08F/--2.2F./6th coldest Miami Beach(1927)/65.17F/-5.6F./2nd coldest Moore Haven(1918)/60.38F/-3.3F./8th coldest South Florida may be most adversely effected in the State simply because so much tropical stuff grows here.It has taken a lick and my bet is we are all ready to wrap this one up and move on.

Southern hemisphere summer 1 2 3
by Tyrone- 116 replies

I thought I'd get the ball rolling. Here in the west of Oz, the start of summer has been a cool one with no need for any air conditioning yet. Nights have been dry and blowy from the east and due to the lack of moisture cool to cold. But that's soon to change. At the moment it's blowing a gale from the east and the mins are in the mid teens celcius. Today we're going for 32C, but when the heat trough forms and moves inland the humidity should rise for a short time and the wind will blow from the west and we'll be getting mins in the high teens to low twenties. Next week we don't really drop below 30C during the day. We're still in our first phase of summer. Th…

26 degrees this am in Punta Gorda,FL 1 2

Temps hit 26 early this morning. It is currently 29 degrees. It is not yet winter. Given the extreme cold of the past two years, I think my zone needs to be changed from 9 to a lower number- maybe 8a. So much for Kentiopsis oliviformis and Satakentias. What happened to the global warming theory? Any ideas?

Watching CBS Evening News tonight and really sorry to hear that a Polar Vortex is due to head down the Midwest real soon and into the south. They said they are expecting it to last several days before retreating back into Canada. Hope the heads up allows you to make plans. Yikes it's only early November.

Funnel cloud in San Diego

I was at work today and glanced out my window and saw this...Pretty exciting, I'd never seen a funnel cloud before. It lasted for several minutes and you could clearly see it rotating. It was much more impressive than the photo seems, but definitely not big enought to be scary. This is just off the coast from the driving range of the Torrey Pines Golf Course in North San Diego (La Jolla). Matt

We are so hosed tonight 1 2 3

Unless something miraculous happens this afternoon, I can't fathom how we don't get a hard freeze tonight. As I write this, it's 40 degrees outside, during lunchtime. We had sleet an hour ago. Now, to make matters worse, it is clearing, and we're not supposed to have any cloud cover tonight to hold in all of the "warmth." Fingers crossed.
