The Australian Tropical Cyclone season has got off to a flying start with number 1 in the Indian Ocean - TC Alenga. Currently Cat. 3 but expected to weaken and dissipate before reaching the WA coast. One likely side effect may be to draw down the monsoon trough which is somewhere over Indonesia at the moment.

Its the 1st day of Autumn today and so far to date weve had 1136mm for Jan Feb with no flooding as such just lots of continual rainy days and very little sun... Autumn is usually our "wettest season", and since I still have plenty to plant thats great ..More rain is always better than Less. Pete

Well the southern summer is technically finished. Right here it doesn't feel like it. The long range forecast says that March will be nearly identical to February here in Perth. Just two days ago we had 2C dewpoints. Today we've had a 37C day and now at night the beautiful humidity has moved in with 23C temps and 20C dewpoints. Talk about extremes. Tomorrow will be humid and 30C after a night around 20C. It's still and humid tonight. Wonderful. So what are your Autumn or Spring experiences? Best regards Tyrone

Autumn/Spring that time again 1 2 3 4

Well, no one was going to put this up, so i thought I should. What's happening in your neck of the woods? Here it is still summer, but as Bob Dylan said "times they are a changin' " Still hot here, but March is warmer than December anyway, so nothing unusual there. Maybe rain tomorrow morning and a mild 29C. How delightful. The moisture that comes out of the air and sky is always welcome here. Even looks like a cold front may come within 1000km of us in a few days which is nice. We haven't seen one of those since about winter 2009. Here's a report on our heat spell, which reminds me. I should put some potash on my Heliconia rostratas this arvo. Maybe the …

Average First Frost 1 2

Based on data from 1981-2010, the first frost in my area on average comes around November 6th. Here we are approaching December within the next couple of weeks with no temps in the 30's anywhere in the forecast! Looks like first frost maybe the very tail end of November or early December. Forecast models are hinting at maybe a frost coming on December 5th, which is literally almost a whole month past the average date.

Hi Everybody Does anyone have any good suggestions for planting cool looking fast growing trees that would provide canopy in a few years to avoid frost and radiational freezes. All this talk by Ray and Happ about this scary Siberian stuff caused me to travel(computer) over to Russia to see with my own eyes what the conditions are there right now.Well I am no expert on those conditions and for all I know they are experiencing the greatest heat wave since sliced bread. That stated, however, I found these Temperatures to be a little nerve racking. This was a quick search and did not encompass numerous sights that were very close in Temperature: Pokrovsk-(-51F) Sejmchan-(-51F with Mon/Tues low-65F) Ust-Maya-(-54) Verhojansk-(-55) Ust-Jjudona-(-59F) Clarjakon-(-59F) Zyrajanka-(-61F) Tompo-(-61F with a High/low Wed.expected to be -61/-76;is this …

Backyard Microclimates
by LouisvillePalmer- 3 replies

Do you live near a large mountain or hill that helps keep temperatures warmer? Do you live next to a large body of water that keeps temperatures warmer? Have you planted tall windblocking evergreen trees in your backyard? Do you have other backyard features to help keep it warmer? If so... Post a Picture! I want some ideas an data on what works and what doesn't work to squeeze out ever 1 degree of more warmth I can. I live near some hills and a river runs through my city. I'm debating on if it would make sense to get a house near the river or at the base of the hill to help have a warmer backyard. Also pondering what would be the optimal backyard setup for micr…

Bad BAD HEAT

All those in CA understand what I'm going through... This week 112, 113, 114, over night lows upper 80s, recorded the highest overnight low in history @ 90 on Monday night and matched it on Tuesday. My plants are dying, even with daily drenchings... Tree ferns, in the shade fried, I mean brown-Fried, dried up and dead. The grass is loving it. Tropicals, hating it... Anyone else in weather trouble??? Can someone post a picture of snow, just to make me feel cooler?

Bad News for California
by happ- 17 replies

Lately the weather pattern has shifted all moisture north w/ only light amounts of rain in NorCal & no rain in SoCal. Unfortunately it appears that this may last a while. In-fact there are similarities to the winter of 1976-77 where El Nino missed California altogether. This past January of 2009 was bone dry & quite warm & we may have a repeat unless the atmosphere behaves! Here's a detail discussion from the NWS_San Francisco: SHOULD SAY THAT CURRENT PATTERN APPEARS TO BE DRIVEN BY SEVERAL KEY FEATURES. NOTICED THAT THE AO INDEX WAS OFF THE CHARTS TODAY IN THE NEGATIVE. CPC HAD TO EXTEND THE ORDINATE TO -6 TO PLOT THE CURRENT AO INDEX. ONE H…

The week after Christmas has the potential to be very bad as I'd mentioned earlier. http://www.srh.noaa.gov/news/display_cmsstory.php?wfo=tbw&storyid=61334&source=0 At least we'll be able to admire the carnage of mother nature's fury in the warm sunshine. http://www.accuweather.com/blogs/news/story/43166/warmer-days-may-lie-ahead-for.asp

BEAUTIFUL SPRING
by gsytch- 20 replies

The weather in Tampa Bay has been almost perfect. Starting at the end of March, we have not seen a night below 58F, bountiful sunshine, breezes, and sunny, warm afternoons. It rained this week - over an inch - after two dry weeks...which were good because of so much rain in March. Most afternoons are around 80-82F, humidity very moderate (50-60%. Plants have been exploding! Unfortunately, the winter losses did mount, but those that made it are starting to recover. Waking up to 62F this morning under clear skies. Typical April. I have not seen anything over 85F either, and cannot remember the last day (other than the rainy day) that it did not hit 80F. Memories are fading …

Anyone keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Bertha? Last report I saw stated moving west at 21mph... Very fast! Not that anyone can really predict these things, but it looks to me that she's already a bit far north to run across FL... They usually have a motion that arcs them northward. Fingers crossed one more time.

Best Caryota for Zone 9b
by Ezekial- 3 replies
Hello, I live In Inland Southern California and would like to grow a type of Caryota. Where I am temps in the high 90s sometimes low hundreds are not uncommon but winters are mild (low 40s at most usually) and most of the time get decent rain for here. My question is which type of Caryota would do best in the climate? I cant put it in full or partial sun. I really want Caryota urens cause of the speed of growth (I’m not very patient) 😂

Best Home Weather Station

Hey guys, I want to measure high, low, precip and humidity. Don’t care about much else. Want something that can take the Arizona sun without decaying all the parts. Doesn’t need to be crazy wind resistant or anything or have too many fancy features. Whats the best combination of low price and high quality for my needs? Would also like to be able to capture historical data in a phone app or something but that’s low on the priority list.

Best website for historic low temperatures
by Cody Salem- 2 replies

I've been lurking at this website for years and decided that I should start doing some posting. I wanted to share what I have found to be the easiest place to find data historic low temperatures across the U.S. It's pretty obscure, so I doubt many of you have seen it before. https://wrcc.dri.edu/summary/sodusa.html First choose your state, then you will see a list view and map view of all the available stations. Some stations have more complete data than others, so you might have to check a few of them. Even though the website format is a little outdated, the data is auto-generated, so all of the stations that are a…
