What Type of "Microclimate" Would This Little Lake Island Have?
by PalmTreeDude- 1 follower

So the other day at a stop light I snapped a picture of a small island on a lake, the water around it is about 15 feet deep and this is in Virginia on the boarder of zone 7a/7b. I am wondering, if the very middle of this small island would have a solid zone 7b or maybe even a zone 7b/8a climate? It has a lot of canopy to protect from winds and everything, just a thought I had, I am curious to hear what other people say.

According to my weather station, the coldest it got was 24.1ºF on the night of this past Thursday. Thanks to my microclimate, we stayed a few degrees warmer than what was reported from downtown and near the airport.

What's it like living in Leilani
by BobSDCA- 3 replies

Just thought I would start a thread that didn’t rely on cold weather! I have been thinking again about the Hilo area of the Big Island and wondered why it does so well when I comes to growing palms? There are wonderful growers in the area and Floribunda Palms is located in Mountain View – not too far away…right! Everyone’s favorite palmy place is in Leilani Estates to the south of Hilo! I never realized that Hilo received so much rain until I read some of the previous posts showing large amounts of rain falling in just 24 hours, and checking the climate data, Hilo gets over 126 inches of rain a year…wow! I have visited Oahu, Maui, and Kauai, but have not had the plea…

What is the most tropical place just based on temperature?

Is this huge difference in tempatures in Coastal Southern California and Inland Southern California from the ocean and the mountains? How high are these mountains? Every time I look at a tempature map of the U.S. I see how much cooler it is in Coastal California than Inland California, which I know is a desert. Does Coastal California ever seem chilly out at some times around this time of year? Out of curiosity I sometimes compare tempatures of here and places like San Diego or Los Angeles and a lot of the time it is warmer here (during the day) in the Spring time. For people who live in these places, what does it feel like out? It looks like Southern California has all k…

What's Up? How Cold in Cali?
by happ- 1 reply

The much touted "Cold Spell" is receiving lots of attention & opinions. At best it should be bad news for frost-prone areas like Oceanside plain/Vista/San Marcos/El Cajon. Metro areas should stay above 40F though NWS predicts 39F in San Francisco Saturday morning. Bay Area will be especially cold in areas away from the water. Wind may be the worst part of the system since the cold dry air massing in western Canada will ride a low pressure into the PacNW/RockyMts forcing/funneling tight millibars. So long as it stays windy the night temps will modify but super dry air will cause damage. It is strongly urged to irrigate heavily before this event. Hope for…

What's your soil temperature?
by Jastin- 6 replies

What is your soil temperature? I came across a few articles on the effects of root development and plant/root growth. I have dense soil which takes a while to heat up and thus root development is slow( especially in the winter), which means my plants grow slower. Having a lighter soil mix allows the sun to heat the soil faster which speed up the process of root/plant development. This morning the air temp was 41 degrees at my house and my soil temp was 49 degrees. I checked my garden area with lots of new compost at the same time and it was 70 degrees. I've heard that root development stops at around 55-60 degrees (soil temp) Root system http://www.mendeley.com/…

When Does Spring Arrive in Florida?
by chinandega81- 1 follower

Obviously the calendar says March 21, but what criteria do you go by for it to "feel" like Spring has arrived in Florida or the subtropics? If we go by daily average highs, it's tough in South Florida. The coolest high is 76 so we would have to pick a higher number, say 80...but that would be a more summerlike temperatures vs. Springtime temps. We could go by day length or sun angle, and that to me makes it "feel" like Spring sometime in March, which coincides with the calendar date. We could also go by when things start to first bloom...my favorite....I notice Hong Kong orchard trees begin to bloom in December...but that feels too early. Mango trees start to bloom h…

When It Rains it Pours

On Saturday the 18th it rained an inch every ten minutes for an hour and a half at my place in SE Houston. The Frogs in the yard thought they were getting water boarded. Fortunately, it rather dry compared to the 40 inchs we got in 24 hours many years back. It can really rain hard in SE Texas. Ed

Whens this So Cal weather stop? 1 2

This time and Oct-Nov are some of the hardest times for me. The Santa Ana type weather, makes nice temps, but my usual 50%+ humidity drops to under 20% and I start getting sunburn, yet its still cool enough at night that the palm roots are slow on the moisture uptake. So the best I can do is spritz my leafs and pray for some partly cloudy days...

Where Do You Measure Your Temperature?
by Kathryn- 16 replies
- 1.9k views
Everyone is posting about the low temperatures in their yard versus local weather stations. Where in your yard to you measure your temperatures? How many thermometers do you have? What were your various reading? I have one min/max thermometer just outside my bedroom about 1 foot from my house and 1 foot from the ground. This one had a low of 34ºF Thursday morning. I have many smaller palms in this location - including a potted Chamaedorea oblongata that did just fine. I have another min/max thermometer in the same area, but it is 6 feet from my house and six feet from the ground. This one had a low of 27ºF Thursday morning. I’m not sure how cold the rest of my yard …

Where does it start looking tropical for you? 1 2
by philinsydney- 56 replies

We are lucky on the east coast because we have tropical-looking vegetation at least as far as 35S. the Illawarra district south of Sydney has fertile soils and a high rainfall, meaning there are large figs, bangalow palms and fan palms, flame trees and stinging trees growing wild. But when I am travelling north the landscape doesn't really resemble the tropics until I reach Grafton and the Clarence valley. Here all of a sudden there are sugarcane plantations on the river flats overlooked by timber houses on stilts, and some enormous Moreton Bay figs in the paddocks. There is nothing quite like this south of Coffs Harbour. Where do the pseudo-tropics start for you?

Where is Central Florida ?
by Bill H2DB- 32 replies

While it is a indefinite area , I wonder where it perceived to be by those not living in the general area . Economic ties are one thing , but climate-wise etc are another . When I was young , the Daytona area was much more tied to Jacksonvile in many ways economically than now , as the growth of the I-4 corridor has changed everything . I prefer to refer to sub-divisions such as N. Central , S. Central , and even W. Central etc . It does seem that from afar , Florida ( as are many other places ), is seen as one amorphous place . Here is the Wikipedia article . Needs some input . Conspicuously absent is Highlands County , for e…
