TWISTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!
by Bilbo- 6 replies

Who would have believed it - its none other than the UK! The other day we had a bad one in North London and one along the coast from me in Southampton. Until I read the facts in a sensible newspaper I would have guessed the Carribean. The police have said that its a miracle no one was killed or seriously injured. Roofs have gone and entire house walls are down so you can see right into the rooms. The scientific explanation it seems is due to our latitude which means that arctic cold weather gets sucked down from the North and can collide with warm weather from Southern Europe. How curious that you can get both at the same time indeed a few years back we had a mini to…

I have lived in both FL and TX for over 5 years each, been all over both states. Have seen what grows in both places, and have studied the climate records for both states. So I have come up with a little comparison between the 2 states. My comparison is what 2 cities/areas are nearly identical or closely match both palm wise and climate wise. See if you agree with my comparisons, or tell me where I am wrong. San Antonio/Houston = Jacksonville. I looked up climate records and did comparisons for averages for SA and Jax. They are nearly identical, about as close as you can get. The average overall yearly temp in SA is 1F higher than Jax. With Summer in SA being …

Typhoon remnants to hit the PNW
by Las Palmas Norte- 11 replies

Several bands of heavy weather are set to hit western Washington and British Columbia, the worst of which is expected by Saturday. Some forecasters are predicting to be similar to Typhoon Frida back in 1962. This storm is the remains of a typhoon from Japan. Cheers, Barrie.

Typical summer evening in Florida
by ruskinPalms- 7 replies

I love the weather here in florida in summer. Here are a few pictures of what can be expected any given summer evening: Outflow boundary approaches from the northeast generated by the rain cooled air of some big storms that were raging inland: Sometimes, these boundaries can fire off some new storms in thier wake. Darkening clouds approach from behind the boundary:

Climate Central released a report on Wednesday, July 14, detailing how the group's scientists and researchers created an index to evaluate the intensity of urban heat islands and then applied it to 159 cities across the nation. In the top five, New Orleans, Newark, New York City, Houston, and San Francisco scored as having the most intense urban heat islands, ranging from 7 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit higher on average. https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/how-these-5-cities-became-the-most-intense-urban-heat-islands/981815 Ed in Houston

Uh Oh - Here comes trouble!

Well - I have been pretty cocky about how we have such a great climate here in Brownsville, and that we can raise some fairly tropical stuff, but might have to eat my words and watch the palms fry tonight. Although they are calling for 33 degrees as a low tonight, it is already 41 and looks like it is dropping fast! Pray for me!!

Ok, this is just nasty. Santa Ana is in full force. Yesterday was nasty but this morning is even worse. I just got 68 degrees F, w/ 15% humidity reading @ 9:00 am. It's expected to heat up to around 90F. This means single digit humidity expected for sure in the drier areas. Ohhh dear...

Well as we transition from winter to summer, I think this probably warrants a post. Some devastating bush fires on Saturday evening in northwest England. It's like something you would expect to see in Australia or Greece during their summer. I'm now hearing that a cigarette butt may have caused this inferno below near Liverpool! An entire nature reserve lost and 800 people evacuated from their homes. How the actual hell does a 'wetland' catch on fire in March!? This is crazy... The scale of the damage on Sunday morning As if that isn't enough, another fire was absolutely raging i…

UK Winter 2022/23 & rainy season
by UK_Palms- 1 reply

I figure I better do a thread for this coming winter so that I am not clogging up the 'what is your current yard temperature' thread again. So far it has been incredibly mild and almost summer-like at times. The rain and unsettled windier conditions have arrived though as the Atlantic oceanic influence has reestablished, taking over from the high pressure, subtropical ridging associated with the Azores high and Csb conditions in southern England. No sign of any cold potential though yet, assuming we even get any this coming winter. ECMWF has temps pushing 26-27C / 80F on Halloween in London and southeast England. A far cry from the weather that we used to experience …

UK Worst Freeze Since 2010 1 2 3
by Foxpalms- 3 followers

The Polar vortex is sending freezing air towards the UK creating a cold setup quite possibly worse than the 2010 freeze. All the air from the arctic is being funneled down onto us. We are under clear skies all night tonight the temperature in London is slowly dropping whilst the countryside and the outskirts are plummeting in temperature. This freeze has practically appeared out of nowhere after a long hot summer and warm autumn/fall. It was supposed to be just above freezing however the last week the forecast got worse and worse until we ended up with this, an arctic air mass and clear skies at night. This is the worst possible scenario whilst snow might also be bad the…

United States Severe Weather 1 2
by JLM- 63 replies

I got bored and started thinking, what if i create a thread specific to severe weather events? I thought about this partly because of the event that has occurred across portions of Texas and Oklahoma today, this activity is spreading over Arkansas as i type this. If you do not know, the Storm Prediction Center has 5 severe weather risk categories. Marginal (1/5) - 5% severe threat Slight (2/5) - 15% severe threat Enhanced (3/5) - 30% severe threat Moderate (4/5) - 45% severe threat High (5/5) - 60% severe threat So what do the percentages mean? Well, say you are under a Slight Risk, this means there is a 15% chance of seeing severe weather within a 25 …

Unprecedented Calif. Drought Emergency Declared
by Dypsisdean- 28 replies

California Gov. Brown declared his first drought emergency in 1977. And what have those responsible for providing this precious resource to California's growing cities done to prevent the repeats in ’79-’82, 2007, and today? Apparently not enough - as today he mandates draconian rationing for those making Cal. their home. (Brown has ordered the California Water Resources Control Board to implement mandatory restrictions to reduce urban water usage by 25%). And this may only be a start. I heard jail time mentioned as an enforcement measure for punishing "water wasters." Jail Time For Water Wasters? An interesting article below from a source I don't often agree with…

Well we had a disappointing spring cool and wet. Summer was here for about 1.5 months and. Now late August all we have is low to kid 70s temps. Which is not normal. Very unusual. Global warming my but only thing we have that’s warmer is our winter up and downs. So I’m looking into bringing my container ranch in early this fall because my seedlings are slower in these temps. I’m in southern Ontario anyone else up this way pjssed with our cool late summer?

Upcoming Strong Pacific Storms
by Palmy- 18 replies

I’m sure most of California is aware of this but we are expected to have some very strong storms roll on through here producing hurricane force winds and heavy rain all along the coast of California. It would appear that central California is going to get the brunt of the storm. Models indicate that we could see 3-5 inches of rain in the lowland and up to 6- 8 inches on the bay area hill tops. It also looks like we are going to have very windy conditions. It looks like the temps will fall too later in the week. Would the palm experts recommend tying down some of the tall palm trees? I’m on a hill crest and the last thing I want are hurricane forced gusts. NOAA SF…

US Winter Results

Winter is over for the majority of Palm growing regions of the United States. The maximum and minimum temperatures together with the growing days reveal with great precision the climate of each region. Every year is different but this year the Western US was cool. South Texas and South and Central Florida were extremely warm. Subtropical regions such as Houston, New Orleans and Jacksonville were also comparatively warm although Houston and New Orleans did experience temperatures in the low 20s F. Los Angeles experienced a winter high temperature in December 2016 of 80° F, a low of 40F in January 2017 and growing days totaling 629 units for the three months. Pa…
