This is what we in arizona call hot
by sonoranfans- 10 replies

I know some of you in the pacific northwest are feeling the heat, I understand its well above normal. But in arizona its been hot enough perhaps to make even you think how lucky you are up there. Take a look at these temps http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/story/142356 15 days of 110F or above, 24 days of 107F or above, with the lowest daytime high of 101F. Add to that 9 nights that had lows of 90F or greater. The average high for the month was 109.5F, an average low for the month of 87.1F with the overall average temp for the month of 98.3F, the hottest july on record. Even my palms don't like this, not at all. Crispy butias, and "thin leaflet" phoenix tell …

This Socal weather sucks... 1 2

I feel like I must have clicked my heels and wound up in Kansas somehow. Cold and wind, gusting to 50+ mph. It's like a fricken hurricane outside. I picked a great year to plant my field nursery...record heat this summer(up to 118f), with oppressive heat for weeks on end. Then many hours of subfreezing temps in Dec, and now this....If my plants survive this winter, it will be a miracle. I think I'll go clean the 1/2 ton of debris out of my pool now....

Thoughts on setting up a Wunderground station?
by RedRabbit- 8 replies
I get the impression my current thermometer reads a little cold and I'm thinking about replacing it before winter. I saw on Amazon you can get a weather station compatible with Wunderground for $60: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01ATRHVP0 Throw in a radiation shield to protect the sensor from the elements and you're in business for about $100. It seems like a pretty good deal when you consider remote access and all the historical data you'd have stored on the cloud for free. Has anyone else done this?

December for Palm Beach area averaged median temperature of 72F. Jan. 2015 so far has maximum of 84F., miniumum 68F and median at 77F. Low temperature prediction for Artic front on Wednesday is 55F. Feels more like May than Jan. I well know this can change at the flip of a switch but it just feels weird.

Too much rain
by Ed in Houston- 18 replies
- 2.6k views
It is getting quite soggy in Houston. We have had over 7 inches in the last month at my place and 55 inches in the past year. This would be fine if it were 7 inches in a summer month as the heat would "boil" it away. Some parts of Houston have had 60 inches in the last year, more like S. Louisiana. If we had sandy soil it would be a different matter but with clay soil and cool temps it is too soggy. Only been a couple of years since we were in a drought and parts of Texas still are in a drought. Note: This is not intended to irritate the folks in California. Ed in Houston

Too much rain yesterday

I heard a tree fall yesterday, but that alone is not unusual. However this tree broke exposing honey combs and I found two groups of bees on the ground the next day yards from the tree near a little banana. The bees convinced me that the Chamaedorea in a pot (that I was considering planting there) would need to remain undisturbed for the present. And were it not for the wide shoulder to my driveway I would have been trapped as lots of vegetation slid down. Sorry, can't get the photo showing the slide before my efforts to download. I got some good exercise today moving lots of the downed plants, but ran out of daylight t…

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/25/science/earth/25cold.html?_r=2&hp=&pagewanted=all Interesting article that points out how for the past 2 winters, Arctic air has descended well into the middle latitudes while the North Pole is experiencing record warmth. The AO [Arctic Oscillation] created unusual cold last winter and again this winter in the Southern U.S. and a summer that broke all-time records for coolness along the U.S. West Coast. Maybe this is something we will be dealing with year after year.

Tornado damage... we don't see that much over here..
by Exotic Life- 11 replies

Yesterday evening i was in Rotterdam with my dad too watching the soccermatch from the team that i support. When i was home later that evening it was raining a lot and heavy sometimes. When i was home, started the computer and looking on the dutch weather board with weather amateurs. I saw messages about little tornado and "windhoos". When i take a better look i have seen some pictures.. This morning there was a heavy discussion about this... because the tv and radio called minitornado.. but if the look too the damage it was for sure F1. For the most of the people on this board it's an F1 "nothing" but fur here it's really unsual! We know the term "supercell" and seen tha…

I heard that the Montebello section of east LA had a small EF-1 tornado touchdown yesterday and caused damage to several buildings injuring one. Supposedly California records an average of 11 tornadoes a year and LA county sees less than one per year. The one yesterday was the strongest one to hit the metro LA area since 1983. I had never heard of one sighted in California before today but it's likely due to the weakness and minimal damage that they usually cause. Makes me wonder how palms would hold up since the vast majority of tornadoes occur in non-palmy areas. I didn't hear any reports of Washingtonia casualties.

Tornadoes In Tampa

We had a cold front move through and make it a lot more comfortable to garden, but got a dose of severe weather with it: https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/photos-severe-storms-tornadoes-cause-damage-near-tampa-florida/70006529 I heard the emergency broadcast tones on the way home just in time to see a bunch of dead sabal fronds go flying across the highway. "Vigorous cold front" was apparently an understatement.

After one of the driest and hottest summers, both categories likely coming in within the top 10 this year, the first day.. and week of Autumn arrived yesterday quite dramatically across Arizona.. Thanks in part to a duo of dying tropical systems ( Lorena and Mario ) moving into a favorable position in/ around Baja Sur, and an anonymously strong, and early low pressure area that rode down the east side of the Sierras yesterday, and is currently anchored, but wobbling over Puerto Penasco ( what happens when one sips too much Patron silver, lol ) Arizona recorded not one but 3 Tornadoes. F-0 up near New River ( far north side of the Phoenix Metro ) an F-1 in Wilcox ( e…

My plant is fueling and I don’t know what to do with the new leaf, I have placed it near the heater that comes on a few hours in the night and by a window, I water once a week as well. Is that sufficient for the plant? mid the soil supposed to look whitish on top like a moss layer?

Hello PalmTalk members, As all of us in the Central/Eastern US are aware, our dreams of trouble-free palm growing and increasing of climate zones designations, have been more an more confounded by freak and very severe cold weather plummeting all the way to the Gulf Coast, often annihilating cold sensitive palms in these regions. I happened to have the below video (posted by PBS Terra) recommended to me in my YouTube feed and thought that this was valuable to share as it makes a lot of sense in what the reality has been in spite of recent zone jumps being published by the USDA. Hope you find this as interesting as I did.

Tropical Cyclone Dorian 1 2 3
by palmsOrl- 89 replies

Okay, so it appears that Tropical Storm Dorian will pose a significant threat to peninsular Florida this weekend, Labor Day Weekend. Currently, the storm is forecast to make landfall on the coast of East Central Florida. This is, of course, subject to change, but track forecasts have improved dramatically in recent years. What is more uncertain is the strength of Dorian. While previously believed that the tropical cyclone would pass directly over Hispaniola, the computer model consensus now has Dorian passing between Hispaniola and Puerto Rico or directly over Puerto Rico. This would cause far less disruption to the storm's circulation and would leave the storm m…

Tropical depression Gordon

Darn Gordon. Gone crazy up here. Rained out the final round of pga golf today jet stream is all wonky. We went from 31c a couple days ago to 15c highs last two days and 12c at night pretty rare temps. Then when Gordon is gone back up to 28c. Crazy. I brought my container ranch in to my Palm room for the winter and a couple of my potted palms. The cold east winds are brutal. I also sprayed anti transparent on my outdoor palms to get them through these few days until it warms up. Wilt pruf should help them get through the cool rains coming from Gordon tonight and tomorrow
