All the news and people is talking about this: We are passing the warmer april of our history, at this momment i can say that we are getting yet summer temperatures and nicely for the western fields rainning and rainning, a month ago i saw rainning a lot in the desertic cactus groves of the west, very nice to watch the Trichocereus in a cloudy sky.- Here temperatures yet never had dropped of 18° C, today a warm night with a minnima of 26° C!! but... mosquitos in everywhere.- Remember the frost of april 2000 when the temperature falled to -6° C the blankets in the lawn and the palms dammaged.- To the point that the boddy is missing some cool/cold at night.-The climate c…

Up here along the northern Gulf Coast, ive been getting waves of soaking rain, temperatures in the upper 70's to low 80's for highs since March. Well, looking at models that will probably change this weekend going into next week. So here is the situation, a ridge of high pressure is expected to set up over the Southeast US, this will bring on the Summer heat for everyone in the SE, and possibly higher than normal summer time heat. Most of the models that i can view that go out into next week are currently showing an 8+ day heat event, with temperatures from South Florida to the Carolinas reaching the triple digits. The 12z run of the GFS even showed 107F west of Jacksonvi…

The Season of Fire and Rain. Southwest Monsoon Season, 2020
by Silas_Sancona- 21 replies

With a new week comes the start of the most important "season" across the U.S. Southwest, the North American Monsoon ( NAM ), and the "official" start of Astronomical Summer in the Northern Hemisphere ( on Saturday ) While essentially quiet across most of the state atm, it hopefully won't be too long before our bone dry scorching heat gives way to daily or weekly rounds of rain and raised humidity. As mentioned in earlier threads here in the WX section, already been a few flirty teases across the state in regards to what may lie ahead for the season itself. At the same time, still trying to get the 4 corners High set up over the Great Basin/ Inter-mountain West, and de…

Well someone had to do it. Meteorologically it starts tomorrow. So far here is averaging around 9.4C min and 18.3C max and we did have one morning of 2.5C with a bit of crispiness on the exposed lawns in the morning. But we're way behind on rainfall.

The upcoming "modern solar minimum"
by Turtlesteve- 6 replies
- 2.9k views
I watched a presentation on climate and the upcoming solar minimum. The short summary is that we're headed for a ~30+ year period of reduced solar activity starting in 2020. The IPCC / global warming consensus tends to discount the impact, but the presenter believes that solar forcing has been underestimated, and we'll see severely colder temperatures in the next couple decades, potentially leading to crop failures and famine. (2nd link is the presentation which is quite long but interesting) https://www.livescience.com/61716-sun-cooling-global-warming.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_yqIj38UmY This certainly wouldn't fit with my long term gard…

The Weather Channel vs Weather Underground App (Tempature Wise)
by PalmTreeDude- 7 replies

Out of The Weather Channel (default weather app on my phone) and the Weather Underground App, which one do you prefer? I personally prefer The Weather Channel app because it seems more accurate compared to Weather Underground, for example this morning it said on The Weather Channel app that it was 50 out and on Weather Underground it said it was 42. When I went outside it was for sure 50, it may have even been warmer. But around noon the two apps tempatures even out. For example the pictures below. Weather Underground is the one that is black.

The wet stuff...

Well, after a very dry and much warmer than average start to 18, looks as if the West/ Southwest is in for a bit of a pattern change. How long or brief? We'll see but anything is welcomed, esp throughout S. CA and AZ. While there has been a bit of hymn and haw back east regarding the weather pattern sparing the west much of the brutal cold everyone else has been enduring, keep in mind it isn't all rosy glasses in t-shirts here either. While the recent stretch in the 70s and 80s (in a few spots) this time of year is obviously great for people and plants, there's an unfavorable side to the coin. Keep in mind that alot of our water going forward comes from winter…

The Wild Enigma of Wickenburg Weather
by ahosey01- 0 replies

I had some questions about what temps would look like here in Wickenburg after moving in June. My house is at the bottom of the Hassayampa River valley in the center of town - about the lowest point you can go without actually being in the river. It's also on a slope, so the backyard is 10+ feet lower than the front yard, further away from the house and without any tree canopy. Been measuring temps since moving in from front yard to back yard, and also morning to mid-afternoon. What I have found - at least in my spot - is striking. 40+ degree temperature variations are the norm, and 50+ swings are not uncommon especially in fall. In the summer I saw a particular…

Freeze free this far. We get a freeze free winter every few years. Hoping this one will hang in there. Predicted lows tonight we're coming in at 31, hung at 32 for a while, dipped to 30. But for last few hours as we close in on it, now steadying up around 34. We are over due for a mild one.

Right, so this has pretty much come out of nowhere over the past 24-48 hours. Two major Atlantic storms are due to barrage into us this week with the first less severe one making landfall on Wednesday evening, affecting northern areas more. However the second more severe storm is due to hit central England with extremely violent wind speeds affecting the whole of the UK. That second storm is the one I am worried about down here in southern England. Potentially 100mph+ winds in the pipeline, looking at some of the models. This is the first, and less severe, storm Dudley that is due to hit Scotland and northern England on Wednesday. This will still bring w…

Thermal shock for seed germination
by amazondk- 7 replies

I was watching a local program called Globo Rural this afternoon and they had a report about reforestation with native trees in the south eastern Amazon region of the Xingu River. One of the methods they use for seed germination for hard to germinate seeds is thermal shock. They first run boiling water over the seeds and then follow up with cold water. This was for tree seeds with hard shells. But, maybe it will work on some palm seeds. The temperature shock makes small cracks in the seeds allowing for quicker germination. I am going to try this on some Acrocomia aculeata seeds I have. Who knows maybe it will work. Does anyone have any experience using this method? dk

Thermal effect of water
by Walt- 1 follower

December of 2010 was the worst month of cold I've ever experienced in my 13 winters living in Highlands County, Florida. You can't get any farther inland between the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. As such, there is no thermal influence from both bodies of water. However, there is a thermal lake effect influence, but it doesn't carry far. I have three friends who live in a lake front community. All are master gardeners (as myself), hence they are concerned about and record low temperatures. Two of my friends live right on the lake (3,504 acres in area) and one friend lives about 500 feet of the east shore of the lake. On my coldest night last December I recorded a low …

Thermometers !!!
by Bill H2DB- 2 replies

I am amazed at the number of posts that I see , in which the posting person is guessing at the temperature in their yard , or relying on TV station data , or some other source , such as a vehicle readout . The temperature that counts is the one in your yard , and even that varies within your own yard ,let alone over an area as big as most towns etc . So , with digital therms available very inexpensively , what not buy a few , and park them around ? Or do a survey of your yard by walking around with a therm during the freeze ? Lot of info for your own little world right there . An example : https://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Indoor-Outdoor-T…

Thermometers in California
by Tracy- 0 replies
I was planning on buying a couple of outdoor thermometers so I could track the highs and lows in different parts of my garden instead of just one spot with my old standard mercury thermometer. I wanted to purchase a traditional mercury thermometer with max and min readings recorded. When I began searching I found that California banned mercury tube thermometers, something I vaguely remember reading in the press. While they are still available online in other states, it seems they can't be shipped legally into California. I tried a digital which I used for a while, but the display didn't last long (acquired a big box). I called what I thought would be a good source i…

Howdyall: In the horror of the past week I'd forgotten about another nasty fire, in Berkely Hills, near San Francisco. This was a NASTY fire, 3,000 homes lost, 25 people killed, $1.15 billion in damages. I'm sure the No-Callians will have some memories of that. I do, too. I remember my skin crawling in horror at the spectacle of those flames headed towards those nice houses. Here are some links, which speak for themselves.
