As usual, we skip right past spring and go straight to summer in South Texas in Mar/Apr. It was 105F (40C) in Laredo yesterday, 104 in McAllen, 101 in Kingsville and Alice, 96 in San Antonio and so on. The 90 degree heat surged all the way north to North TX, was 88F in Wichita Falls along the Oklahoma border. Another hot day today (90-100) throughout most of South TX from San Antonio to the Mexico border.

As it is now summer and the old spring topic section was getting to be a magnum opus I thought it a good time to start off a new page so to speak. Yesterdays rainfall celebrations turned out a bit premature. I decided to plant a few things and once I got 2cms below the surface the ground was still bone dry and this was after I had the sprinklers running on monday. However inspite of the meagre rain and hand hosing, the palms are taking off big time. I get a shock when I really look hard at some of them. So far the best performers are Livistona fulva, Livistona rotundifolia and Dysis gracilis sp pink crownshaft. Pritchardia hillebrandtii sp blue dwarf has grown steadily th…

They mention on the news at noon that they except the weather to continue to be more hot and dry all the way to October. Seem every years we have always been hot and dry, thats what are summers are like. So glad we got all that rain last week when we did.

Are sunset zones still used and can they be applied or calculated in other countries (since this is the/an International PS)? I am trying to find out my sunset zone in the Azores (our climate described in my signature and under avatar and profile). Elevation 140 m (459 ft.), latitude 38º.

Yesterday was close to the hottest day for 2012 here in Beerwah, temp reached 40c/104f. Add to that a series of hot days and no rain for a long long time, and what you get is damage to some plants, whilst some others carry on regardless. Here's some photos taken this morning on a day expected to reach 33c. The sun damaged include a Licuala ramsayii and a New Guinea lace tree fern, but have a gander at that whatsisname plant, really smashed:

I'm not sure if this belongs in the weather/climate section, but I read this phenomenon occurs after extended periods without rain and little/no wind allowing the natural oils to develop on the surface of the water. I captured these photos recently at a local swamp.

Tampa, St. Petersburg, FL weather archives 1 2
by surgeon83- 46 replies

Hello, I am hoping someone can guide me to a source of free weather archives specifically for the Tampa / St. Petersburg, Florida areas. I have the monthly average temperatures and record highs and lows from weather.com, but I was hoping for an archive of daily temperatures dating back to about 1948 (which I think would be the earliest for St. Pete). I have data like this for Galveston, and it is really great to have. Thanks in advance for your help. -Brian

Temperature difference between Hawaiian Islands
by Al in Kona- 2 replies
- 1.6k views
A sheer line from a frontal system moving down from the northwest brought rain and much cooler temperatures to the northern and western most islands (Kauai & Oahu) of Hawaii the past two days and seems to have stalled over the island of Maui never quite reaching the Big Island (Hawaii Island, the southeastern most island). This resulted in a wide range of high temperatures today and will likely continue tomorrow if the weather forecast holds true as this system is now forecast to move westward returning to Oahu and Kauai with more rain and cool temperatures. Today (Tuesday January 27) the high temperature in Honolulu was 71 F while in Kona it was 82 F, a difference o…

Being as how it's REALLY gonna be cold the next few nights here in SoCal, I got to wondering: what type /brand of thermometers and / or weather gauges / stations does everyone use? Also: Given that the wife is asking "so what do you want for Christmas"....I'm thinking of asking her to pick me up one of the wireless weather stations with the remote sensors...anyone got any suggestions? Brands, model #'s, any pics you have of yours in action and prices would be greatly appreciated!

Temperature outlook for May
by Funkthulhu- 9 replies
- 1.4k views
The Climate Prediction center (CPC) has issued their temperature outlook (Forecast) for May 2012. There are four categories, A (Above), B (Below), N (Near Normal) and EC (Equal Chances). Historically, 33.3% of the time the temperatures will be A, B, or N. Therefore, the numbers in the red area for example are all 33 or higher. The darkest red area is enclosed by a 50 or higher line meaning the probability of it being warmer than normal is 50% or 17% higher than random chance (33%). The area of EC means there is no current predictability and all three categories are equally likely (A, B, N). Based upon this map, the outlook for Nebraska is a highest likelihood of co…

Temperatures Near the Ground
by ahosey01- 9 replies

The crazy weather in my yard has really got me thinking and wondering more about weather than I ever had before. The front yard is a consistent 5-7 degrees warmer than the back yard. However, the back yard sits maybe 10ft lower than the front yard. Is it the difference in elevation that accounts for that temperature variation, or something else? Also, just how much warmer is the air above the ground at - say - 10ft or 20ft or 30ft? I’m highly curious.

Temps OK here

If we don't get a substantial amount of rain in Feb-Mar, this coming summer is going to be a disaster. Temps on the other hand have been quite mild in San Diego. These are readings so far in January from a place just down the hill from me: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation...mp;yearend=2010
