Drought Forecast for U.S.
by happ- 7 replies
- 1.3k views
La Nina conditions [cooling of the tropical Pacific] are strengthening & storm patterns appear to be illustrating that trend. Rainfall this winter may be meager in California [as well as other southern states]. Last February a similar cooling occurred & greatly effected rainfall. We are facing possible water rationing by this summer unless we get some rainfall before winter is over Here's the graphic: http://westernusawx.com/forums/index.php?a...st&id=13281

Drying palms

Hello all, I'm new around here and I started this topic because I have some little palm trees indoor and the look like they are either ill of affected by the weather conditions. I've got this little ones from a botanic garden in which of course weather conditions were optimal. In my apartment there is not the level of humidity required, I know that..but since I moved to Germany I managed to grow different types of plants originally from worm and wet weather. It is not the case with this palms, I do not have the name, but I'll get it soon. I have them under white light (9hs), we haven't seen the sun for weeks. I recently put some small containers with water arou…

I got up a little earlier this morning and looked at Wunderground, this is what I saw. http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/?lat=27.04283905&lon=-82.35276031&zoom=8&pin=Venice%2c%20FL I did not know how to save the page, but at 445am, it was 60F in Venice, and the Suncoast from Bradenton to Sanibel Island were all sitting between 57-62F. Oddly enough it was around 50F in Tampa, 48F in Naples, upper 30s to low 40s everywhere inland and south of Orlando, and mostly low 50s from West Palm to Miami. Even the northern Keys were colder than the Southwest coast here. I thought it was a misread temperature, so I went outside, and even with 30mph winds, I was no…

Early Start to the Rainy Season? 1 2

There was a significant downpour here yesterday, and weather.com reports 0.37 inches of rain. Some of my potted plants were drenched and it was raining when I got home again today. At least we won't have to deal with as bad a drought as we had last year at this time.

Earth, Wind and FIRE
by Kim- 12 replies

Yesterday a long drive from north of Point Conception down to San Diego, and coming into the Ventura area, an eerie dark cloud was hanging over the Channel Islands. Fog bank? Dust cloud from the high winds? Smoke....? Soon that eerie orange glow from the sun informed us it was smoke, and coming into the Camarillo area, the smell assaulted us. The wicked offshore wind whipped the flags straight out, blew over trees, and pushed the car sideways. Fire in Malibu, Kanan Road, then much further south another just starting in the mountains. I called ahead to San Diego, already two fires were burning there and a confirmed fatality. This morning, it's much worse; 10 …

So they're saying that the temperarure is rising and annual rainfall is getting less and less but I have made two observations in the last 3-4 years: (I live in Athens, Greece) 1) The average low temperature during winter might be getting a little higher (about 0,5 °C), but we're getting heavier cold fronts (more frosts, much more snowfall, etc.) which is fatal when growing tropical plants 2) The summer has indeed more heatwaves, but when the heatwaves pass, the normal summer appears to be cooler than it used to be many years ago. Also here in Athens, we're getting more rain in the summer (happens also to southern Greece, where the summer was virtually rainfre…

Eastern Pacific Hurricane season 2021, A record early start
by Silas_Sancona- 0 replies

While still a few days shy of the "official " start of this years Hurricane season ( May 15th ) Appears things are already getting going southwest of Mexico. While a minimal Tropical Storm, Andres marks the earliest a named system has formed here. Second earliest would be back in 2017 on May 10th. https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/tropical-storm-andres-earliest-tropical-storm-on-record-develops-in-the-eastern-pacific/ar-BB1gx34n Doesn't appear this system will hang around very long, and won't bring any moisture north of the border, except maybe across parts of southern Texas later on. Hopefully a sign of things to come and some drought relief later.…

From the Climate Prediction Center prognostic discussion (10-14 days out) "8-14 DAY OUTLOOK FOR JAN 23 - 29 2015 DESPITE THE AFOREMENTIONED UNCERTAINTY DURING THE 6-10 DAY PERIOD, THE WEEK-2 FORECAST IS ISSUED WITH FAIRLY HIGH CONFIDENCE. MODEL AGREEMENT REMAINS GOOD WITH RESPECT TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE RIDGE OVER FAR WESTERN NORTH AMERICA, WHICH IS FORECAST TO ALLOW MORE ARCTIC AIR TO INFLUENCE THE CONUS WITH TIME. THE 528 DM HEIGHT LINE LOCATED OVER THE GREAT LAKES IN THE MANUAL BLEND FINDS ITS ORIGIN OVER THE ARCTIC OCEAN, A SURE SIGN OF AN ANOMALOUSLY COLD PATTERN. IN FACT, THE FORECAST PATTERN BEARS MANY SIMILARITIES TO THE EXTREME COLD PERIODS TH…
