Here are some copies of the front page of the St. Petersburg (FL) Times from December 13, 1962 (which was the date at which many all time records low temperatures were set). I saw this posted on some boards in downtown St. Pete and took some photographs. Note the ice hanging off of the newpaper name as well as the "Hour by Hour" temperatures shown in the top right corner of the page! 38F at 3 PM in the afternoon! Some of the other historical headlines are also interesting.

Ok folks....here we go. This is looking like the real deal. I am showing a reading of 38.6 in a protected area and it's only 10pm. I think mid 20's will settle in here tonight. My Rhapidophylums say "Bring it on, BABY!"

This could get worse than expected...it's 8 PM Tue night, and already 31f in my lower field. If this holds up, I'll be below freezing for 11-12 hours...It looks like I'm gonna be the CRDB poster child this year. In this field I have, in ascending order(lowest/coldest first) Yucca Rostrata(they should be ok) Cham Hum Cerifera, Jubaea, Butia x Jubaea, Sabal Uresana, Dyp Decipiens, Parajubaea Torallyi Torallyi, Ravanea Xerophila, and at the top, Rav Glauca and Sabal Mauritiaformis. Over 2,000 plants at risk...yikes...help me Mr. Wizard !!!!

Starting off the month cold and wet in Louisiana. Drizzled all day yesterday, woke up to rain and 40 degrees. Will top out today around 55. Its been a wet fall and early winter here. Reminds me all too much of those cold wet winters that were common back when I grew up. You could wear all the layers you wanted and an over coat, but the moisture just went right through them the minute you walked out the door. Used to make my teeth chatter. The last two warm decades have hardly given us the opportunity to wear winter clothes here. But I just got this gut feel this one is gonna be different. I sure want to be wrong.

December 2010 Summary

Today was far and away the warmest day of the month for my station, wih a logged high of 79F. The values for the rest of the month are a bit chillier! The month has ended with an average temperature of 51.2F, which is 2.1F lower than the alltime record for Tarpon Springs of 53.3F (1903). The average high of 61.2F is actually lower than the normal average temperature for the month. Heres hoping for a better January! The western palm areas of the United States experienced a traditional December 2021 while the eastern palm areas of the United States experienced what can only be described as wildly warm. While I have not verified where this December 2021 lines up historically, I can only assume that it must be approaching Los Angeles, California Had a high maximum temperature of 69°F, a mean temperature of 55.2°F and a minimum temperature of 40°F. San Diego, California had a high maximum temperature of 70°F, a mean temperature of 55.81F and a minimum temperature of 39°F. Palm Springs, California had a maximum temperature of 89°F, a mean temperature of 58.51F and a minimum temperat…

No changes on the long range forecast, a very slight drop in temperatures but generally continuing to be unseasonally mild. This morning at 06:34 it is 13°C/55°F, which is a few degrees warmer than forecast.

December weather 1 2 3 4

Well it's December. How is it so far for you. Today we had a top of 27C, tomorrow will be 31C with evening showers, and then mid twenties with rain for another couple of days. Normally Decembers are totally dry with very rare rain for us. This summer may be a wet one, which will be nice. Palms are starting to really leap ahead now even though Nov was a full 2C cooler than usual. Best regards Tyrone

November ended warm and December is starting that way. Supposed to see a cooldown tomorrow but nothing too serious. The palms have slowed down now despite at least 2 straight weeks of mid 80's for highs and mid 60's for lows with a fair amount of humidity. This leads me to believe that a lot of palms' push to grow comes from the sun angle and intensity more than the temps this time of year. Everything is still slowly growing though. Rain would be nice. I don't think I had measurable rainfall in November...Hope December brings mild temps with some rain.

Deciduous Trees in the South
by AnTonY- 2 replies

I've read through lots of discussions in another forum about how deciduous tree-heavy the South is compared to other subtropical regions. Just one of the many examples here: http://www.city-data.com/forum/weather/1789938-why-does-inland-us-south-look.html Such discussions inspired me to do my own research on the matter. As a result of such research, I am now coming to the conclusion that the presence of deciduous trees in the South has nothing to do with climate, but rather, is a result of geographic/geologic technicalities. For one, places in East Asia at similar latitudes to the South are entirely broad-leafed evergreen, even southern South Korea, which sees a…

Looking at analogs for this Wednesday, yeah it looks like it could be pretty bad. Everywhere from NW Florida to extreme eastern Texas, and north to southern Indiana and southern Illinois is already in a Level 2 Slight Risk. Slight Risks dont happen often in the Day 4-8 outlook time period, and we could be looking at a Level 3 in the Day 4-8 when it updates tomorrow night if trends continue, which is very rare. I only remember seeing a Level 3 risk in the Day 4-8 outlook only a few times in the past few years.

Hello, I was just reading the worst freezes thead and ran accross Darnell's Dictum. Anyway, what plants define a USDA zone? What should I be looking for? How can you know how old the defining plants are? For example, I live in the boonies and there are very few interesting palms planted. I guess the farmers that owned the land here previously were not interested in Royal palms, Coconuts etc. However, there are large "groves" of bananas around with fruit, large Ficus elastica trees - the largest being about 50' in height just accross the street in an old home's front yard. Several other smaller 'weeping fig' trees maybe to the largest being 30-40' in height. There are c…

definition of a "freeze"
by Tropicdoc- 9 replies

After our recent arctic vortex event, I have redefined my definition of a "freeze." To me now, a freeze is when a shallow pan of water will become ice if left out overnight. So, during our recent event, 5 gallon buckets of water holding down the flaps of my greenhouse ended up with ice in them! Now.... that's a freez!. That's not the same thing as air temps dipping down to 31 for a few hours, which had happened a few timers already and caused minimal problems. I believe if you define freeze as weather that will freeze a bucket of water, it changes the list of palms that can handle a "freeze." Just saying.

Definition of "tropical"? 1 2
by spockvr6- 55 replies
- 4.8k views
Regarding different geographic locales around the globe, one is often left to wonder "is that place "tropical" or not"? Is it purely by latitude (i.e. if one is between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn then the location is by default, regardless of climate, considered in the "tropics")? Or, does one take a less strict approach and look at climate data and use certain rules of thumb (such as if the difference between daily highs and lows is more than the difference between highs in summer and winter, then the location is "tropical")? How do you define tropical?

Definition of tropical 1 2
by Zeeth- 44 replies

What do you guys think the definition of tropical is? Mean temps above 64 for each month in the year, or by looking at vegetation? It is certainly easier to do so by vegetation, like saying if coconuts and other tropicals will be full term in an area. Temperature readings from the internet are often skewed, as many times what you are reading for one city is often from a station in another, often colder, city. I would bet that certain areas of costal St. Pete, Anna Maria Island, and some of the other islands in the area do indeed have mean temps above 64 for the entire year, but since stations are usually based on the mainland the readings are skewed. A good example of thi…
