I have been reading a lot of stuff from non-politically influenced sources, that we may be in for the beginning of a solar minimum after a solar maximum that wasn't so 'hot'. any ideas on extra winter protection this year? Thanks, John

Cold Winter Storm NorCal

" ON SUNDAY...THE TAIL END OF A PACIFIC WEATHER SYSTEM NOW LOOKS AS IF IT`LL STILL BE JUST STRONG ENOUGH TO BRING A CHANCE OF SOME RAIN TO ABOUT THE NORTHERN THIRD OF THE DISTRICT. THEN IN THE MONDAY TO MONDAY NIGHT TIME FRAME...A MUCH STRONGER STORM SYSTEM IS PROJECTED TO SPREAD WIND AND RAIN ACROSS THE DISTRICT WITH COOL AND UNSETTLED WEATHER CONTINUING ON TUESDAY...AND SNOW LEVELS POTENTIALLY LOWERING DOWN TO THE 2500-3000 FT RANGE. ALSO...GIVEN THE MODEL PROJECTED STRENGTH OF THIS SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED COLD AIR ALOFT...ALONG WITH LATE MARCH DIURNAL HEATING...WILL NEED TO CAREFULLY CONSIDER POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT CONVECTIVE ACTIVITY AS WE GET CLO…

Cold Winters Correlation with Sunspots
by Ed in Houston- 6 replies
- 1.8k views
Most people have probably heard of the sun's 11 year sunspot cycle. Some years there are almost no sunspots at the trough of the cycle and represent a calm less active and cooler sun. One can think of it as when there are a lot of sun spots it is boiling and when there are few spots it is cooler. Recent sun spot cycles: Notice the relationship of the years of the cold events below relative to the sun spot cycles. The cold events tend to occur near the sunspot minimum. January 1950 saw unprecedented cold and snowfall in the Pacific Northwest, with normally mild Seattle and Portland both falling below zero. The winter of 1962–63 was th…

Cold without end

Well, there was frost again on the grass this morning. Aside from last weeks record setting freeze, this winter started on the last day or two of November for me. Since that time, there have been perhaps 6 or 7 nights when ice did not develop on my vehicle, that is, when there was enough humidity to allow for it's formation. In prior yers I could count the nights that this occured on one hand. So much for the weatherman's outlook of low 40's nighttime temps for the week. It's quite the laboratory experiment on just what "cold hardy" means... Bret

Coldest night of year on tap 1 2
by NBTX11- 41 replies
- 2.7k views
Well, tonight is the big one and probably the last one of the year. Supposed to go down to the mid 20s (24-26F). Coldest up until now has been 29F. On the positive note, we're supposed to have a good rebound, with 70s in the 7 day forecast next week. Perfect setup tonight for a hard radiational freeze. Temps are supposed to drop like a rock. It's already in the low 40s and the sun just went down. This makes 2 years in a row that the coldest night of year is in Feb, and not Dec or Jan. It's supposed to be getting warm around here, avg high is nearing 70F. I'm tired of this, bring on the heat.

So I am not exaggerating when I say that this spring has been the coldest on record and the absolute worst that I have ever endured. It has been absolutely dreadful here, even by UK standards. The whole of the UK and most of Europe has been affected by unseasonably low temperatures for about 6-7 weeks now, since early April. The whole of 2021 has been pretty bad for here and the rest of Europe with below average temperatures and snow/freeze events in both January and February. Although March was okay and marginally above average, temperature-wise, both April and May have turned out to be the coldest spring months on record for the UK and most of Europe. I have spoke…

Coldest Temps of Winter for California 1 2

California will be blasted with extremely cold temperatures into next week due to a pattern allowing Arctic air to flow easily down the West Coast. Frost and freeze warning are posted for tonight and Friday night for nearly all the coastal valleys in southern California. The wind last night gusted to over 40mph in metro Los Angeles yet the temperature still dropped to 43F\ 6.1C at my house. Tonight will not be as windy and dew points will be very low = frost for many locations. Weak storms are forecast to circulate down the trough into next week and usher in even colder air for California and the Southwest. The clouds and wind may be the only thing to save some garde…

Coldest Winter Ever?

It looks like it is going to be a cold one and that means snow. Because we are Palmsters, we need to be aware of our record snowfalls so we can compare.I start this with US but request add-ons from all warm blooded Palmster regions world-wide. The book is for 24 hour records: (1) Hawaii-0 in the cities (2)Arizona-Yuma-1.5 inches Tucson-6.8 inches Phoenix-1.0 inches Lake Havasu-3.0 inches (3)California-Burbank-4.7 inches Death Valley-1.1 inches Los Angeles-3.0 inches Palm Springs-2.0 inches San Diego- Trace (4)Florida-Daytona-Trace …

Using annual minimums from 1997-2021, the average annual minimum for College Station was 21.92 degrees. That puts us well into hardiness zone 9a! I'm so happy. 1997: 23 (9a) 1998: 24 (9a) 1999: 24 (9a) 2000: 19 (8b) 2001: 24 (9a) 2002: 17 (8b) 2003: 24 (9a) 2004: 25 (9a/9b) 2005: 24 (9a) 2006: 26 (9b) 2007: 21 (9a) 2008: 25 (9a/9b) 2009: 24 (9a) 2010: 18 (8b) 2011: 19 (8b) 2012: 28 (9b) 2013: 28 (9b) 2014: 19 (8b) 2015: 22 (9a) 2016: 22 (9a) 2017: 17 (8b) 2018: 15 (8a/8b) 2019: 26 (9b) 2020: 29 (9b) 2021: 5 (7a/7b) I finally decided it was time…

Commencement of Fall in Florida
by bubba- 14 replies
- 1.4k views
Morton Weisberg in his book "Florida Weather" states that Fall commences when a location has two back to back minimum temperatures below 60 degrees F.Weisberg did a 30 year study, from 1956-1986.He found with this criteria Miami had it's earliest Fall on Oct. 27 ,1957 and it's latest Fall on Jan.5,1986.In the Palm Beach area we recorded 54 degrees and 57 degrees F. on Oct.24,2006 and Oct.25,2006 respectively.Does an early Fall portend a cold winter?

Comparing Climates

I've been on this forum just over a year now, and it's been an education in learning about what others here experience. It's interesting finding people on the other side of the world with a similar climate. Our Southern California climate seems to be mirrored most by New Zealand, Southern Australia, Greece and maybe Spain. I wish there were more Mediterranean folks posting to compare notes with. Anyone else find people a world away with a similar climate?

Comparion of high water to low water
by amazondk- 6 replies
We have just entered the dry season here on the south side of the equator. This year was an all time record season flood with the water level surpasing the previous high water mark set in 1953 reaching 29,71 meters above sea level at the port of Manaus. The river has now dropped about 50 cms from that point. I stopped by the Ponta Negra and took a picture today to compare the river to it´s level during the dry season. I took the first picture a few years ago and I do not know the actual date, but it was during the peak of the low water period. The beach is quite large during this time. And, it visited a lot by locals. The normal difference from low to high water is…

Concern with USDA hardiness maps
by NC_Palms- 19 replies
- 2.4k views
I was thinking, since the USDA hardiness maps only measure the minimum average temperatures for only a period of time, it would seem like the post 1980’s hardiness maps of the Southeast make everything seem colder than it really is. For example, in the earliest maps created in the 40’s and 60’s, zone 8 extends much further inland in the Southeast. But in the post 1980’s maps, climates that were originally labeled as zone 8 became either 7a or 7b. Even in Florida, most of the state from Orlando and south had originally a zone 10 climate (zones 11+ didn’t exist yet) so it explains how royal palms had a much more extensive range father north up the Florida peninsula.
